Leadership thought for today: EVERY PERSON HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME A LEADER
Text: Read; 1 Sam. 10:17-24, 13:5-15, 15:10-16:13, 17:32-18:16 / 2 Sam. 5:1-5, 11:1-5, 14-15, 26-27, 12:1-15

Looks can be deceiving, Sometimes we look at a person, and we assume that he has everything it takes to be a great
leader. That was the case with Saul. Scripture tells us, 1 Sam. 9:1-2; Sa lipi ni Benjamin ay may isang mayamang
lalaki. Siya'y si Kish na anak ni Abiel at apo ni Zeror, mula sa sambahayan ni Becorat at sa angkan ni Afia.  2  Si
Kish ang ama ni Saul na siya namang pinakamakisig at pinakamatangkad na lalaki sa buong Israel.
When the people of Israel asked for a king, God gave them Saul, and everyone expected him to be a leader. But the
peole looked at his outer appearance while God looked at his heart. It, wasn’t long before Saul, a man of power and
potential, discredited himself and his leadership, and God chose a new leader in his place. He picked David; a man
after God’s own heart.
I Sam. 16:7” Ngunit sinabi sa kanya ni Yahweh, “Huwag mong tingnan ang kanyang taas at kakisigan sapagkat
hindi siya ang pinili ko. Si Yahweh'y hindi tumitingin nang katulad ng pagtingin ng tao. Panlabas na anyo ang
tinitingnan ng tao ngunit sa puso tumitingin si Yahweh.”
TWO KINGS WITH DIFFERENT LEADERSHIP LIDS
Why did Saul fail as Israel’s king while David, who appeared to be weaker, succeeded? The answer can be
found in the Law of the Lid. Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. While David tried
to become a better leader and had many lid-lifting experiences, Saul’s attitude kept the lid clamped down firmly
on his leadership. Take a look at the similar paths the men travelled:
1. BOTH RECEIVED COUNSEL FROM GODLY MEN; The anointing and opportunity given to Saul and
David were strikingly similar. Both were anointed by Samuel, the last judge of the Hebrew nation. And
both received the benefit of godly counsel-Saul received his from Samuel and later Nathan the prophet.
BUT LOOK AT HOW DIFFERENT THIER REIGNS WERE AS MONARCHS.
Saul never really understood the nature of leadership. The day he was appointed king, he actually hid
from the people.
I believe he did that because he recognize his inability to lead. But after he tasted success in battle, he
mistook his position as king for real leadership. Though he had the title, power and crown of a king,
he never moved the monarchy beyond a charisma-based judgeship. He was made a general, BUT HE
NEVER ATTRACTED A LARGE STANDING ARMY. HE CREATED NO ORGANIZED GOVERNMENT
TO PRESERVE HIS GAINS. AND WHEN NO LONGER FAVORED HIM, HE THOUGHT THE TITLE
OF KING ENTITLED HIM TO CONTINUE LEADING.
David on the other hand, seized opportunities to grow in his leadership. He learned to be a warrior. He
built a standing army and conquered his enemies. He chose a city and captured it to become the
nation’s new capital, and then he built a lasting government there. Much of that he did before he sat on
the throne. From the beginning, all the people of Israel and Judah loved him (I Sam. 18:16” Sa kabilang
dako, si David ay lalong napamahal sa buong Israel at Juda dahil sa kanyang matagumpay na
pamumuno.) David attracted citizens, warriors, and leaders alike, he led them well, As the result of his
leadership, the people flourished. I Chro. 12:1-38” Ang mga Unang Tagasunod ni David Mula sa Lipi ni
Benjamin
12 Narito ang mga lalaking pumunta sa Ziklag at sumama kay David noong siya'y nagtatago kay Saul. Sila'y
kilalang mandirigma, kaliwa't kanan kung gumamit ng pana, at asintado sa tirador. 2 Sa lipi ni Benjamin mula sa
angkan ni Saul: 3 si Ahiezer, ang pinakapinuno at si Joas ang pangalawa, parehong anak ni Semaa na taga-
Gibea; sina Jeziel at Pelet na mga anak ni Azmavet; sina Beraca at Jehu na parehong taga-Anatot; 4 si Ismaias,
na taga-Gibeon, isa sa mga pinuno ng Tatlumpu; sina Jeremias, Jahaziel, Johanan at Jozabad na mga taga-
Gedera; 5 sina Eluzai, Jerimot, Bealias, Semarias at Sefatias na taga-Haruf; 6 sina Elkana, Isaias, Azarel, Joezer at
Jasobeam na buhat sa angkan ni Korah; 7 sina Jocla at Zebadias na mga anak ni Jeroham na taga-Gedor.
Ang mga Tagasunod ni David Mula sa Lipi ni Gad
8 
Sa lipi ni Gad, ang sumama kay David ay mga mahusay na mandirigma at sanay sa paggamit ng sibat at
kalasag, mababagsik na parang leon at kung kumilos ay simbilis ng mga usa sa bundok. 9 Ang pinakapinuno
nila ay si Eser at ang iba pa ayon sa pagkakasunud-sunod ay sina Obadias, Eliab, 10 Mismana, Jeremias, 11 Atai,
Eliel, 12 Johanan, Elzabad, 13 Jeremias at Macbanai. 14 Ang mga ito'y mga opisyal ng hukbo na ang pinakamaliit
na pinapamahalaan ay hindi bababâ sa isang daan at ang pinakamalaki ay isang libo. 15 Sila ang tumawid sa
Ilog Jordan nang unang buwan na ito'y umaapaw at naging dahilan nang paglikas ng mga taong naninirahan
sa silangan at kanluran ng kapatagan doon.
Ang mga Tagasunod ni David Mula sa mga Lipi nina Benjamin at Juda
16 
May iba pang mga tauhan mula sa mga lipi nina Benjamin at Juda na sumama na rin kay David. 17 Ang mga
ito'y sinalubong ni David na nagsasabing, “Kung naparito kayo bilang mga kaibigan, tatanggapin ko kayo.
Ngunit kung mga kaaway, kahit wala pa akong nagagawang karahasan, hatulan nawa kayo ng Diyos ng aming
mga ninuno.” 18 Noon din si Amasai na pinuno ng Tatlumpu ay kinasihan ng Espiritu ng Diyos at nagsabi:
“Kami'y sa iyo, O David, kami'y kakampi mo, anak ni Jesse! Kapayapaan nawa'y sumaiyo at sa mga kapanalig
mo!
Sapagkat Diyos ang iyong katulong.” Malugod silang tinanggap ni David at ginawa silang mga pinuno sa
kanyang hukbo.
Ang mga Tagasunod ni David Mula sa Lipi ni Manases
19 
Mayroon ding mula sa lipi ni Manases na nakiisa kay David nang kanilang sasalakayin si Saul, kasama ng mga
Filisteo. Hindi na natuloy ang pagtulong niya sa mga Filisteo sapagkat hindi nagtiwala sa kanya ang mga
pinuno nito. Siya'y pinaalis at sinabi, “Malalagay lamang sa panganib ang ating buhay, sapagkat tiyak na kay
Saul pa rin papanig ang taong iyan!” 20 Nang bumalik na si David sa Ziklag, dumating nga sa kanya ang mga
tauhan mula sa lipi ni Manases. Ito'y sina Adna, Jozabad, Jediael, Micael, Jozabad, Eliu at Zilletai. Bawat isa sa
kanila'y pinuno ng sanlibong kawal. 21 Malaki ang naitulong nila kay David at sa kanyang mga tauhan, sapagkat
sanay silang mandirigma. Ang mga ito'y ginawa niyang mga opisyal sa kanyang hukbo. 22 Araw-araw, may
dumarating kay David upang tumulong, kaya't nakabuo siya ng napakalaking hukbo.
Ang Listahan ng Hukbo ni David
23 
Ito ang bilang ng mga kawal na nagpunta kay David sa Hebron upang ilipat sa kanya ang pagiging hari ni
Saul ayon sa pangako ni Yahweh:
24-37 
Juda: 6,800 na mahuhusay gumamit ng sibat at kalasag; Simeon: 7,100 na mga kilala sa tapang at lakas;
Levi: 4,600; Aaron sa pamumuno ni Joiada: 3,700; Zadok kasama ang 22 pinuno ng kanilang angkan; Benjamin,
lipi ni Saul: 3,000, karamihan sa kanila'y nanatiling tapat sa angkan ni Saul; Efraim: 20,800 matatapang at kilala
sa kanilang sambayanan; Kalahating lipi ni Manases: 18,000 na pinapunta upang gawing hari si David; Isacar:
200 mga pinuno kasama ang mga angkang kanilang pinamumunuan. Ang mga ito'y marunong humula ng
panahon at nagpapasya kung ano ang hakbang na gagawin ng bansang Israel; Zebulun: 50,000 kawal na
bihasa sa labanan at sanay sa lahat ng uri ng sandata; Neftali: 1,000 pinuno at 37,000 kawal na armado ng
kalasag at sibat; Dan: 28,600 kawal na sanay sa labanan; Asher: 40,000 kawal na handa na sa labanan; Mula
naman sa lipi nina Ruben, Gad at kalahating lipi ni Manases na nasa ibayo ng Jordan: 120,000 armado at bihasa
sa lahat ng uri ng sandata.38 Ang lahat ng ito ay handang makipagdigma, at nagpunta sa Hebron na iisa ang
layunin: gawing hari ng Israel si David. 
2. BOTH FACED GREAT CHALLENGES; Every leader faces obstacles, tests, and trials. Saul and David
sometimes faced the same ones. Take Goliath, for example. When the huge Philistine offered to fight
Israel’s champion, both Saul & David heard the warrior’s challenge. Saul, Israel’s greatest warrior who
rightfully should have faced the giant in battle, reacted by hiding in fear. But David, a mere boy, was
eager to face the challenge and win honor for God. What Saul’s reaction? He offered David his
armor. (Why not-Saul wasn’t going to be using it!) While others wait to see what’s going to happen.
LEADERS STEP FORWARD AND RISE TO A CHALLENGE.
3. BOTH HAD A CHOICE TO CHANGE AND GROW ; The two men’s very different reactions when
confronted with their shortcomings capture the two natures of Saul and David. When Saul disobediently
made a burnt offering to God, Samuel rebuked him(I Sam. 15:1-22-30 &13: 7-14; whole cha). The
scripture is silent on what followed. There is no record of sorrow or repentance by Saul. Instead, the
narrative continues with Saul’s campaign against the Phillistines. Evidently, he kept going on the same
course.
DAVID’S REACTION TO HIS SIN, on the other hand, was remarkably different. After David
committed adultery with Bathsheba and sent her husband to his death, Nathan confronted him,
and the king powerfully repented.

THE ONE WHO LIFTED THE LID

David’s interaction with Nathan is representative of his attitude during his life. He was never afraid to admit his
shortcomings, ask for God’s forgiveness and blessing, and improve himself. It is the reason the lid on his
leadership kept getting lifted higher and higher.
We can all learn from David. If we want to reach our potential and become the person God would have us be,
THEN WE NEED TO LIFT THE LIDS ON OUR LIVES. THAT’S THE ONLY WAY WE CAN GO TO THE NEXT
LEVEL.

DAY 2
Leadership thought for today: EVERY LEADER HAS LIDS.

I Samuel 13:13-14
13 
Sinabi sa kanya ni Samuel, “Malaking kasalanan 'yang ginawa mo. Kung sinunod mo ang iniuutos sa iyo ni Yahweh na
iyong Diyos, ang sambahayan mo sana ang maghahari sa buong Israel habang panahon. 14 Ngunit dahil sa ginawa mo,
hindi na matutuloy iyon. Si Yahweh ay pipili ng isang taong mula sa kanyang puso na maghahari sa Israel sapagkat hindi
mo sinunod ang mga utos niya sa iyo.”

Every leader has lids on his life. Nobody is born w/o them. And they don’t disappear when a person receives a
title, achieves a position, or is invested with power. The issue is never whether you have lids. THE ISSUE IS
WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO ABOUT THEM (lids).
THE LIDS THAT LIMITED SAUL
When God made Saul king of Israel, He removed all the EXTERNAL LIDS from the new ruler’s life. Saul
received God’s anointing, took the position of king, and had the potential to become a great leader. But even
though he had no external lids to his leadership, THERE STILL REMAINED INTERNAL LIDS IN SAUL.
THERE WERE MANY:
ANUNG IBIG SABIHIN? He removed all the external lids from the ruler’s life sa pamumuno ni Saul....
(nilagay siya sa position; reflect; ung mga nilagay lang sa position ang isip nila wala lang mailagay kaya nasa
position, ung mga inappoint d2 maraming nag-iisip ng ganyan; ibig sabhin ang Dios mismo may inaalis na
EXTERNAL na harang, nilagay ka na sa position). Ang Dios merong inaalis na harang(external) pero merong
hindi niya inaalis na harang, BAKIT? Ang nais niya ang mismong leader ang gumawa ng ng paraan para
HINDI SIYA MAPIGILAN ng mga INTERNAL LIDS na yan UPANG LUMAGO ANG LEADER NA ITO. Siya
mismo ang mag-aangat ng mga harang o takip para SIYA LUMAGO AT WAG SIYANG MAPIGILAN SA
POTENTIAL NA BINIGAY NG DIOS SA KANYA. KAYA KA INAPPOINT, ALAM NG DIOS NA KAYA MO.
WALANG AKSIDENTE SA DIOS. THE CHOICE IS YOURS. BALIK TAYO KAY SAUL, ang dami niyang
INTERNAL LIDS.
●Fear; He began his reign by his hiding among the equipment(I Sam. 9-10:22 pagtatalaga sa kanya bilang
hari), and he was afraid to face Goliath.
●Impatience; He refused to wait for Samuel and presumed upon God by taking matters into his own hands
when he offered the sacrifice that was to be presented only by a priest.
●Denial; After Samuel told Saul that he’d been rejected as king, Saul continued as though all as well.
●Impulsiveness; He was reckless and rashly made an oath that almost cost him the life of his son, Jonathan.
●Deceit; He used his daughter Michal as a bribe(pa in) offering her in marriage to David if he would fight the
Philistines, but Saul’s real hope was that David would die in battle. (tuso)
●Jealousy; He became enraged when the people compared him to David(song; kung tutuusin puntos niya un
strength niya c David, isa sa leader niya eh(asset) at King siya kumpara kay David; INGGIT/kamag-anak ng
selos). From then on he kept a jealous eye on the man he considered his enemy.
●Anger; More than once he attempted to kill David with a spear as David played the harp from him.
The majority of Saul’s lids had to do with his weak character. Unfortunately he was always more concerned
with keeping up appearances than cleaning up his character. Even when he was rejected as king, Saul was
most concerned about what others would think of him. I Sam. 15:30”  Sumagot si Saul, “Nagkasala nga ako
ngunit sa pagkakataong ito'y ipinapakiusap sa iyo, bigyan mo ako kahit kaunting karangalan sa harapan ng
matatandang pinuno at ng buong bayang Israel.
Because he never removed the lids from his leadership, GOD HAD TO REMOVE HIM FROM THE THRONE
OF ISRAEL.

THE LIDS THAT DID NOT LIMIT DAVID

When you look at the life of David, you see that he also had many lids on his life, both internal and external;

1. HIS FAMILY; David’s limitations started at home. When his father, Jessie, was asked to gather his
sons so that Samuel could select the next king of Israel, David wasn’t invited to attend. His father
overlooked and underappreciated him.
The same was true of his brothers. When David went to the battlefront to visit them, their contempt
for him was clear. When David spoke out against Goliath’s blasphemous challenges, his brothers
insulted him and told him to go home. 1 Sam. 17:26-29” 26  Tinanong ni David sa mga katabi niya, “Ano
raw ang gantimpala sa sinumang makakapatay sa Filisteong iyan at sa makakapag-alis ng kahihiyan sa
Israel? At sino ba ang paganong ito na humahamon sa hukbo ng Diyos na buháy?”
27 
“Tulad ng narinig mo, ganoon ang gagawin ng hari sa makakapatay sa Filisteong iyan,” sagot ng mga
kausap niya.28  Narinig ni Eliab, ang panganay na kapatid ni David ang pakikipag-usap niya sa mga kawal.
Nagalit ito kay David at sinabi, “Anong ginagawa mo rito? At kanino mo iniwan ang iilang tupa na
pinapaalagaan sa iyo? Alam ko kung anong nasa isip mo! Gusto mo lang manood ng labanan.”

Sumagot si David, “Bakit, ano ba ang ginawa ko? Masama bang magtanong?” 
2. HIS LEADER; Saul was continually trying to inhibit David’s leadership and effectiveness. When David
offered to fight Goliath, Saul told him. I Sam. 17:33” 33  Sinabi ni Saul, “Hindi mo kaya ang Filisteong
iyon! Batambata ka pa, samantalang siya'y isang mahusay na mandirigma mula pa sa kanyang
kabataan.”
 Then he tried to put his heavy armor on the boy, Later, Saul declared that David was his enemy. For
many yrs, Saul repeatedly tried to kill him. k

3. HIS BACKGROUND; Saul came from a good and powerful family. His father is described as “Kish the
son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite, a mighty man of
power (I Sam 9:1) He was undoubtedly a landowner, leader in his tribe, and a military commander
during times of war. DAVID on the other hand, was from a family of poor shepherds. He is described as
the son of Jessie the Bethlemite, a man w/o lofty lineage or powerful position. And David wasn’t the
eldest son. He was the eight youngest in his family.
4. HIS YOUTHFULNESS AND INEXPERIENCE; When David was anointed by Samuel,he was merely a
boy, and he had no experience leading anyone or anything but sheep. When he step forward fight
Goliath, he was considered “ONLY A YOUTH” (reflect personal ang bawat isa sa inyo, bago kayo
mailagay sa position, anu ung mga naririnig niyo sinasabi ng tao and even ung sinsabi ng isip niyo)
AND HE HAD NEVER FOUGHT IN A BATTLE. TIME AND AGAIN, PEOPLE UNDERESTIMATED
AND DISRESPECTED HIM FOR THOSE REASONS.

ULTIMATELY DAVID BECAME A GREAT LEADER, YET IT WASN’T BECAUSE HE HAD NO

LIMITATIONS I HIS LIFE.HE ACHIEVED MUCH BECAUSE HE BECAME A LID LIFTER.

Today’s question for Reflection:

1. Anu-anu ung mga takip o humaharang sa buhay mo para lumago as believer at lalo sa pangunguna?
2. Anu-anu naman ang mga lids o takip na napagtagumpayan mo na, bagamat may time bumabalik
pa rin?
3. Paano mo ito napapagtagumapayan? Anu ang mga hakbang na ginagawa mo?
