WHAT ARE THE BOOKS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT WHICH NARRATED THE STORY OF THE KINGS OF
iSRAEL?

The Books of Samuel, The Books of Kings

2. HOW ISRAEL COME TO HAVE KINGS?

With their arrival in the Promised Land, the Israelites were threatened by the Philistines, who
captured the ark of the covenant. The Philistines later returned it (I Samuel 4-6), but nevertheless, Israel
felt threatened by them. Samuel rescued Israel from the Philistines, but Israel demanded a king who
would lead them (I Samuel 7-8), just "like all the nations" (I Samuel 8:5
They said, "Give us a king to govern us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD. And the LORD said to Samuel,
"Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they
have rejected me from being king over them. The people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and
they said, "No! but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our
king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles." And when Samuel had heard all the
words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the LORD. 22 And the LORD said to Samuel,
"Hearken to their voice, and make them a king." (I Samuel 8:6-9,19-22).

3. DID GOD APPOINTED KING FOR ISRAEL? EXPLAIN.

No. They chose Saul as their king, not for his wisdom or holiness but for his "image”. They chose
him because he was more handsome and taller than any people in Israel.

4.HOW DAVID BECOME A KING?

In the Bible the name David is borne only by the second king of Israel, the great-grandson of
Boaz and Ruth (Ruth 4:18 sqq.). He was the youngest of the eight sons of Isai, or Jesse (1 Samuel 16:8; cf.
1 Chronicles 2:13), a small proprietor, of the tribe of Juda, dwelling at Bethlehem, where David was
born.

5. DESCRIBE THE FOLLOWING PERSONS:

5.1. SAUL – A terrible once king of Israel. He proved to be an evil king (I Samuel 13:8-14; 15:10-23; 28:3-
17). He was envious of David and sought to murder him, even though David was God's anointed.

5.2. DAVID - He is a king, born in Bethlehem. He is anointed ("Christ"). He is "a man after God's own
heart". He experiences rejection and danger, and out of it composes some of the greatest messianic
psalms, such as the one (Psalm 22) Jesus quoted on the Cross. He is the literal ancestor of Christ, who is
frequently called "the son of David" and "descended from David according to the flesh" (Romans 1:3).
Like Christ, David forgives and spares his enemies. On two occasions, he spared Saul's life when Saul was
seeking his (chapters 24-26).

5.3. SOLOMON - Solomon was not the oldest of his brothers, but was chosen to take his father's throne.
From there he proceeded to eliminate all opposition (I Kings 2:12-46). Solomon is best known for his
petition for wisdom.

5.4. NATHAN – Had a friendship with David they have a classic, model friendship. Jonathan gave up to
David his legitimate claim to be king (I Samuel 20:30-31) because of his loyalty to David and because of
his loyalty to God, for he knew God had chosen David to be king (chapter 18). He is a prophet of God.

6. WHAT IS THE PROPHECY OF NATHAN? - Upon his ascent to the throne, David transferred his seat from
Hebron (to avoid accusations of favoritism towards Judah) to Jebus (Jerusalem), which he had attacked
and subdued, and called it "the city of David". He was able to expel the Philistines from the surrounding
areas, thus securing the capital. Aside from making Jerusalem his political centre, he also made it into a
religious centre by transferring the ark of the Covenant from Kiriath-yearim (Cariathiarim) to Jerusalem.

Once the ark was in Jerusalem, David desired to build a house for it. But God told him through the
prophet Nathan that God would instead build a house--that is, a perpetual dynasty--for David. This
pledge of God is called the Davidic Covenant.

7.IS THE PROMISED MADE Y GOD TO ABRAHAM, ISAAC,JACOB, MOSES TO DAVID FULFILLED? If yes.
how? If not , Why?. – No. because Israel was supposed to be faithful to God and obey the covenant
commands but they failed that task big time. It was a period of moral chaos and it showed Israel’s need
for wise faithful leaders.

8. Describe the relationship of Israel, the chosen people before their God, presented in the following
BOOKs:

8.1. 1-2 Samuel – God is not israel’s trophy and he opposes pride among the Philistines

8.2. 1-2 King – David has unified the tribes of Israel into a kingdom and God promised that from his line
would come a Messianic King who established God’s kingdom over the nations and fulfill the promises
made to Abraham.
