ACTIVITIES / EXERCISES

I. Discuss a current event that was influenced by, or could have been positively influenced by a clear
understanding of OB. Prepare an essay that concisely describes that current event and what you
believe to be the impact of OB.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) was influenced by OB, economic pressure was put upon them because of
covid-19, they were forced to call for voluntary separation. Their reluctance to lay off is very evident
as they even try to implement temporary furlough and flexible working arrangements to maintain
jobs as long as possible. But because of collapse in travel demand and persistent travel restrictions
both in domestic and global routes the voluntary later turns into a call for both voluntary and
involuntary separation for retrenchment. As Philippine's economy continues to shrink, it became
inevitable for the company to lay off 35% or around 2,500 of its over 7000 personnel, leaving them
jobless.

II. Choose an organization either local or abroad that you admire. Briefly describe your chosen
organization, discussing what goods or services are produced, how many employees it has, what the
structure looks like, and a general overview of how the organization of study is managed. Explain
why you chose that organization.

SM Supermalls, one of the most famous malls in the Philippines is owned by SM Prime Holdings. SM
was found in 1958 when Henry Sy Sr started a shoe store in Carriedo, Quiapo, Manila. By 1960s they
expanded the shoe store chain. In 1970s they changed the name from Shoemart to SM after
becoming a full-line department store. The first SM Supermall was established in 1985 in Quezon
City named SM North EDSA. Along with the expansion and ventures into supermarket and appliance
store business. Now SM Prime Holdings own 74 malls in the Philippines and 7 in China. Today, SM
Prime has become one of the biggest mall operators in Southeast Asia. Combined, the company has
about 9.8 million square meters of Gross Floor Area (GFA). It has 18,716 tenants in the Philippines
and 1,960 tenants in China. As of 2019 it has 46.43 Billion Revenue, 25.95 Billion operating income.
They currently have 151,709 employees and they continue to grow each year. Since it is a
department store they got it all for you from clothing, shoes, accessories, house appliances, gadgets,
hardware, grocery, cinema, skating rink, bowling and theme parks. I choose SM supermall because
of the humble beginnings of this current behemoth, starting from a shoe store in Carriedo, it now
became a chain of shopping malls capable of leasing thousands of shoe stores in the Philippines.

Answer in an essay format.

What do you hope to gain from the study of OB? How well do you think you currently understand
human behavior in organizations? Have you ever been surprised by the actions or reactions of
another person? Why? Describe what actually happened and what you were expecting to happen.
What do you think may have caused the difference?
I hope to understand the organization and how the society affects different organizations. Since all I
have gained as insight is that human behavior in organizations are usually driven by the incentives
and pay, they get, how they were treated and interaction they make within the organization. I
cannot remember exactly why and how it happened, but I have been surprised with my religious
neighbor’s incessant and repetitive cursing and his gambling really unsettles me.
