Hardy Weinberg Equation (2).

1. In sheep, the characteristics of normal fur is controlled by dominant allele, R while

non-unifor fur is controlled by a recessive allele,r. In a population of 1 000 sheep that
mate randomly, it is found that 250 sheep have non-uniform fur.

a. Calculate the frequency of recessive allele in the population. [1m]

b. Calculate the frequency of the sheep in the population which have heterozygous,
Rr genotype.
[1m]

c. Calculate the number of sheep in the population with

i. Homozygous dominant genotype [2m]

ii. Heterozygous genotype [2m]

d. If all sheep with non-uniform fur in (a) are killed by a disease and other sheep are
allowed to mate freely, find the frequency of the dominant allele in a new
population. [2m]
2. A cross of a cereal variety produces 9 744 individuals with dominant tall genotype, T
compared with 256 individuals with recessive short genotype, t.
a. Calculate the genotypes of the crossing. Assume that the crossing in the cereal
population takes place in equillibrium. [10m]

b. Give the assumption for the crossing in (a) [3m]

c. State the meaning of allele frequency in a population. [2m]

3. a. What is meant by
i. Hardy-Weinberg’s Law [3m]

ii. Sickle-cell anemia [3m]

b. In a particular country in Northern Africa, a medical study revealed that 0.085% of

the country’s population are suffering from sickle-cell anemia, that are controlled by a
pair of allele, H and h, where the individuals with the illness have the homozygous
recessive genotype, those with normal red blood cell have the alternative genotyps.
Using Hardy-Weinberg equation, calculate the percentage of the population of the two
genotypes for normal blood cells

c. In a few remote-areas in the country, the percentage of sickle-cell aneamia reaches

as high as 4%. Calculate
i. the percentage of homozygous and heterozygous individuals with the normal
blood cells [3m]

ii. the ratio for both phenotypes [2m]
