HISTORY OF BATU FERRINGHI
ETYMOLOGY The word ferringhi or feringgi is a modern spelling of the Classical Malay word peringgi, originally used in reference to the
Portuguese conquistadors before being all people of European descent. Also, Batu Ferringhi would mean the place where
Westerners had come ashore, with Malay word batu (rock) referring to the rocky shoreline.

3. SYNTHESIS - It is shown from the analysis that the site has great potential
to become a new tourist attraction at Batu Ferringhi because
of the strategic location of site.

2 ANALYSIS STRENGTH
• The trees that was in front of the site can protect the site by reducing the power
of wind and storm.

WEAKNESS
• It was surrounded by the trees that may affect the power lines if it is too high
and is planted near the building.

OPPORTUNITY
• By having an ocean view and beach in front of the site, we can attract the
tourists or locals to visit the interpretation centre too.
• The vegetations can become the shading device for the site and prevent it from
having soil erosion problem.

THREAT
• The site may facing the affect of tsunami wave/rising sea level again like
happened during tsunami in Aceh on 2004.

3 SYNTHESIS • The vegetation around the site must be trim regularly to avoid any electrical
problem in the future.
• The site must have a lifeguard to monitor the weather conditions at the beach
and give warning if there is a sign of danger.

• A large number and variety of facilities especially accommodation that can be
chosen according to tourist's budget, from a luxury hotel to a budget motel.
• This would be an attraction for all types of social class to boost wide scale in
industry revenues.

WEAKNESS
• Lack of signage along the site selection road that will create wayfinding
failure.
• Uncontrollable high rise building development around the site will block the
view and visuals from other location of the low-rise building especially the
view of the sea.

OPPURTUNITY
• The existing physical features such as jetty and bridge create spatial
relationship between the site and its surrounding.

THREAT
• A lack of security cameras and alarms around the site selection which can
cause an exposes to danger from third parties who engage in criminal activity.

• Beautiful sight with wide view vista to sea.

• Sea breeze helps to provide soothing sound and relaxing.

WEAKNESS:

• Large vegetations blocking the view of the site, difficult for people to access.

• Open area exposed to sun directly during the day with high temperature due to the
direct sunlight .

OPPURTUNITY

• Can be a great attraction place since it is near the beach with many people and the
view is beautiful for catching sunset.

• Difficult to know the location of the site.

• Dazzled may be happen due to exposure of the sunlight

3 SYNTHESIS The site should be easily become as an attraction place but it must provide some
shading for reducing sun glare.

• . Throughout the year the average air movement from the sea breeze is the most prominent from North-East ,
which is the highest and followed by the land breeze from South-West. However the wind also comes from other
direction at very low speed.

TEMPERATURE

Temperature
•The warmest month of the year is during February till June. It is
the most suitable time for outdoor activities and will have the
highest number of beach goers within the year.

•The coolest month is from July till January where the numbers
of people that come to the beach is low.

•However, throughout the year the site location is considerd asa


high temperature location as the wind that comes by the beach
during the day results in the land surface to heat up faster than
the water surface. Therefore, the air above the land is warmer
than the air above the ocean

•High rainfall for months September till November where less people come as it is not
recommended to do so.
• There is an increases in sea level during rainfall which has an average of 100mm increase
and maximum of 400mm increase from September till November .

• The Penang Government tops up sand a month before the heavy rainy season starts
(September-November) to reduce the rise in sea level.
• Avoid building or living in buildings within several hundred feet of the coastline. •
