EXPERIMENT NO. 1
1. Why is it necessary to fire-polished cut glass tubing?

- Because it makes it smooth and blunt stopping you from cutting yourself when handling the
tube, it also slightly strengthens the lip of the tube so it can be held using tongues or forceps.

2. What is a Ceramfab pad and what is its purpose or function during fire-polishing?

- Ceramfab is a safety device. It is used to cool hot objects when it is placed on the pad. It also
protects the hot glass from sudden chilling and the table top from injury.

3. In bending glass tubing, enumerate two (2) things that should not be done in order to produce a
perfectly bent glass tubing and why?

a. You should not use too much heat or it will get too soft. Back off on the length of time you
put the glass in the heat, hold it further from the hottest part of the flame, or use a fuel source
that burns with a cooler flame.

b. You should not bend the glass more than once or else the glass will have bumps or
crimps. This can happen by bending the glass more than once or by letting it get too soft so
that its weight starts to pull it down. The solution to this problem is experience and practice
since there is a certain amount of 'art' to knowing when to remove the glass from the flame to
bend it or pull it. Just know that once you decide to bend/pull, it's a one-time deal. If it doesn't
work, it's unlikely you can reheat the glass and get a better outcome.

4. In preparing burette tips or medicine droppers, why is it necessary to pull apart the heated tubing
in a vertical position and not horizontally? Reason out your answer.

- If we will pull apart in horizontal position the tip of the burrete will bulge downward or
subside.

5. Why do we need to properly insert a glass tubing or thermometer in a rubber or cork stopper, and
what is the purpose of a lubricant during the insertion? Discuss.

- Rubber stoppers is used to plug flasks and test tubes. The purpose of these stoppers is to
prevent liquids, and sometimes gases, from escaping their containers, as well as prevent
contaminants from entering the containers.

- Inserting glass tubing into a rubber stopper can be hazardous if certain safety precautions
aren’t taken. Gripping the tube near the bottom when you are inserting the stopper is not the
best way to do it. Because the tube could shatter causing serious injury and cut you to the
bone.

- The purpose of lubricant during insertion is to facilitate the movement of the glass tubing. So
that it will go smoothly during insertion. Because without lubricant, the glass might break
while inserting into cork stopper.
