1.1 SYSTEM OVERVIEW

The HEC SALVAGE ENGINEERING SOFTWARE (HECSALV) is an integrated system of
programs designed for quick salvage response.

The Salvage Response Program and Section Modulus Editor comprise the core of the HECSALV
Software. These are the calculation and evaluation programs designed for salvage response analysis.
The Salvage Response Program is used to calculate the response of the vessel to damage and
subsequent flooding. It can handle free-floating damaged or stranded conditions. Damaged results
include stability and strength characteristics. Oil outflow can be predicted based on hydrostatic
balance. For strength, the extreme stresses can be calculated accounting for reduced structural
integrity of the longitudinal hull girder. Ballast and cargo movements can be evaluated as well as
wave and tidal effects.

HECSALV also includes programs for standard naval architectural data entry and calculations.
These programs facilitate the entry of the necessary ship information for performing the salvage
calculations. Program functions include:

• Hull offset entry

• Hydrostatics, Bonjeans, and Cross Curve calculations
• Compartment definition
• Compartment volumes and centers calculations
• Intact trim and stability calculations
• Shear force and bending moment calculations
Chapter 1 Introduction

The supporting programs which are used for data entry are also well suited for design analysis. A
high level of productivity is possible because of the attention paid to the development of efficient
input and output schemes. Computers offer extremely fast information manipulation but the
pre-processing (or input) of the information is still controlled by the user. Every step of the
HECSALV has been carefully designed to maximize the speed and efficiency of this data entry. In
most cases this has been accomplished by simplifying the user interface. In light of this simplicity,
we anticipate that once you have used the programs for a short while you will need this manual for
occasional reference only.

All the programs are accessed through a horizontal menu bar. Data files created by different
programs are stored on disk and are available for further manipulation by the other programs at any
time. Choice of disk drives for the system programs or data file storage is completely flexible.

While this system of programs is easy to use, it is important that the salvage engineer or designer
have a basic understanding of the calculations and their underlying concepts. These programs should
only be used by someone well versed in the principles of naval architecture and structural analysis.

1.2 ABOUT THIS MANUAL

This documentation is designed to acquaint you with HECSALV and provide you with the necessary
operating instructions to take full advantage of its capabilities. Included is information on hardware
requirements, basic program usage, and background concerning the calculations and assumptions
used.

In order to assist you in your use of this Instruction Manual we offer the following suggestions:

• If this is your first exposure to the HECSALV Software, we suggest that you read this chapter
and the chapter pertaining to the program of interest. Familiarize yourself with the different
sections of this documentation and try to gain a comfortable understanding of the overall
workings of the system and its capabilities.

• Before running or installing the program, check to make sure that the computer and its
peripheral devices are connected properly. Refer to Appendix A, "HARDWARE
REQUIREMENTS / COMPUTER CONFIGURATION", for detailed information.

• Appendix B, "SYSTEM SET-UP AND INSTALLATION", will help you get the program
installed onto your hard disk and ready for use.

• The "QUICK START" section below is a condensed step-by-step guide to getting the programs
up and running once they have been installed. It leaves you at the Control Program menu. For
information on how to use the menu system and move through program refer to Chapter 2,
"GENERAL PROGRAM OPERATION"

• A detailed discussion of the layout of the programs and the relationship of the different
modules is included in Chapter 3, "DATA FLOW AND PROGRAM UTILIZATION". It
contains flow diagrams depicting how the various programs and data files interact.

Chapter 1 Introduction

• Chapters 4 through 19 discuss the main system programs. Each Chapter gives an overview of
the function of a program, discusses the methods of computation used and describes specific
data selection and data entry techniques.

• Appendix C gives background on a few DOS commands which will be useful for formatting
and accessing disks.

• Appendix D contains instructions on how to modify the default data size limitations and tailor
the default analysis and display modes to suit individual applications through the SIZE.DAT
file.

• Appendix E outlines the other file types which HECSALV can read. The structure and file
naming requirements for the SHCP, GHS and SFOLDS files are outlined.

• Appendix F gives information about digitizer initialization procedures.

1.3 QUICK START

This section describes how to get the HECSALV Software up and running as quickly as possible. It
offers no explanations or descriptions of options and features. It is simply a "how to" guide to
getting started.

While we agree that there is no better way to learn how to use a program than "punching the keys",
we recommend that you take the time to read the following chapters with some care. They contain
useful tips and tricks as well as explanation of underlying assumptions and calculations.

Due to the size of this system, HECSALV must be run from the computer's hard disk. The floppy
drives may, however, be used to save data files.

Installation
The HECSALV Software is supplied on high density disks (1.44MB - 3.5" disks). To start the
installation program, insert program disk #1 in the A: or B: drive. At the system prompt, C:>, type:

if program disk is in drive A: A:INSTALL

if program disk is in drive B: B:INSTALL

The HECSALV Software is placed in the default directory C:\ HECSALV unless the directory paths
are modified by the user in the INSTALL Program. Peripheral hardware such as printers and
digitizers can be selected in the install program.

Refer to Appendix A, "HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS", and Appendix B, "SYSTEM SET-UP

AND INSTALLATION" for more detailed information on installation and hardware options.

Chapter 1 Introduction

Running HECSALV
Step 1 Turn On Computer
Once the computer has been turned on and the self test and loading of the Disk Operating
System has been completed, you will be presented with the system prompt, "C>". If your
computer has been set up with a menu control system which does not include this software,
then exit the menu system and return to the "C>" prompt.

Step 2 Align Printer Paper

If you are using a laser type printer this step is not necessary. If you are using a dot matrix
printer with tractor fed paper, it is important to align the paper in the printer so that the
printed forms are output correctly. To do this, leave the printer OFF and adjust the paper
position with the paper feed knob so that the perforations on the paper project just above the
print scale. Now, turn the printer ON. The top-of-form is determined when the printer is
turned ON.

Step 3 Start HECSALV Software

Simply type:

C:\> HECSALV [Enter]

This command will access the appropriate sub-directory and start the program.

Step 4 Proceed with Data Input or Analysis

After initiating the command to start the software, the copyright screen will be displayed.
Press [Esc] and the Control Program menu screen appears. The HECSALV Software is a
collection of fourteen independent programs which perform distinct data entry or calculation
operations.

Rapid Analysis
Section Modulus Editor

Each program is featured as a pop-down window menu option on the Control Program menu
bar. This screen will permit the operator to move between the main programs within the
HECSALV Software system.

From the Control Program menu bar use the cursor, [Enter], and [Esc] keys to select
different programs, enter data, and display results. Detailed information for each program
covering data selection, data entry, assumptions, method of calculation and results are given
in Chapters 4 through 19 of this manual.

Each program uses certain disk files to store and retrieve data for its own use and to
communicate with the other programs.

NOTE: All data transfer between programs is done via the data files stored on a disk.
Therefore, all data must be saved before exiting each program.

It is not required that the programs be used in any certain order; only that the data files
required by a certain program have been created and are accessible on some disk storage
medium. Chapter 3 contains flow diagrams showing the normal order of program usage
which would be employed under various scenarios.

Step 5 Exit Salvage Software

When you have completed all calculations, and wish to end the session choose the

option from the Control Program menu bar.

Remember, once you have exited the program, all information you have entered will be lost if
not previously saved. Therefore, be sure you have printed all desired results and stored the
current case.

If you are finished, remove any floppy disks from the disk drives and place them in their
storage case.
