Ii - The Building Blocks of Research
• Research, as with any discipline, has its own language—its own jargon.
o Studies with humans involve two sets of people: those who do the
research and those who provide the information. In a quantitative
study, the people being studied are called subjects or study
participants, as shown in Table 3.1. (People who provide
information by answering questions—e.g., by filling out a
questionnaire— may be called respondents.)
Variables
Data
➢ This section describes that flow, and the next section describes how
qualitative studies differ.
➢ The empirical phase is often the most time-consuming part of the study.
➢ In the analytic phase, researchers come full circle: the questions posed
at the outset are answered.
➢ The researchers’ job is not completed, however, until the study results
are disseminated.
