- GAMMA RAYS –

Gamma rays are the most energetic known form of electromagnetic radiation; gamma waves have highest
frequencies and shortest wavelengths.

A). The range of frequency in the region.

- Frequencies of 3*1019 Hz (30 EHz) or higher.

B). The range of wavelength in the region.

- < 0.01 nanometers (about the size of an atomic nucleus)

C). What the waves can do.

- Gamma-rays can kill living cells, using gamma-rays to kill cancerous cells.

D). When and how these waves are generated.

- These waves are generated by radioactive atoms and in nuclear explosions. Gamma rays are produced
in the disintegration of radioactive atomic nuclei and in the decay of certain subatomic particles (Subatomic
particle, also called elementary particle, any of various self-contained units of matter or energy that are the
fundamental constituents -an essential part: component element- of all matter.)

E). When and how these waves are used.

- Radiation treatment

- Gamma rays are used in medicine to treat internal organs. Gamma rays are used to kill bacteria, to kill cancer
cells, to sterilize medical equipment and in radioactive tracers.
