He was this age when he used to come home only once every two weeks. He
was studying in UPLB back then while I was in my first grade following his
footsteps. His trips back home were the weekends I used to count down to, weekends
I looked forward to the most one of the very first applications of my calendar

The person I am today is patterned after him. He was the standard. He was
brilliant but he denied it. I never heard him speak highly of himself, but whenever

must first become a prisoner. Prison is both a cell of anxiety and a cell of
opportunity. In a sense, writing is my breaking from the prison of anxiety but is also
my wanting to enter such room of opportunity.
As a person who never truly found his voice in speaking, I resorted to the
medium that gave me allowance to compose my thoughts, I found myself in writing.
Whenever placed in a situation of speech, the feeling of a drumroll heartbeat, pulses
racing on and off, sweat gliding through my body welcomes me; I feel as if the whole
world is staring down from an invisible distance, and that world forms its own arm
to rage off and drown me in my own container. Je e Be a Pa c

the middle of that prison had unparalleled power. Michel Foucault was right,
surveillance was an authority not to be reckoned with. Everything was a feeling; I
felt chocked, I felt watched over, I felt judged, I felt mocked, and I felt contained
but these were all in my head, consumed by something I subjected myself with.
Escaping from such a nightmare barred with walls of steel, a mighty pen let
itself known, whispering to my ear that hope is not lost, promising that its utility
would penetrate the room that otherwise would be impassable. So, I did, from the
moment I held it with my fingers and palm, steel turned to cardboard and the gates
crumbled like falling debris. The pen gave me what speech never could a voice.
