2005 DOMESTIC THEATRICAL MARKET

BOX OFFICE

Despite a 6% drop in 2005, the US box office held near the $9 billion mark for the fourth consecutive
year.

The top five films of 2005 pulled in over $200 million each and one film surpassed the $300 million mark.
The top five films were:
 Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith ($380m)
 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ($289m)
 The Chronicles of Narnia ($289m)
 War of the Worlds ($234m)
 King Kong ($217m)
ADMISSIONS

Over the past ten years, admissions have shown steady growth with an average increase of 1% per year.
In 2005, admissions tallied $1.40 billion – an increase of 37% from 1980, 25 years ago.

SCREENS

The number of theatrical screens increased 6.2% to 38,852 in 2005. Screen counts are now above levels
seen in 2000. While theatrical screens continue to increase, digital screens are growing at accelerated
rates. In 2005, the number of worldwide screens reached 849, an increase of 153% over the previous
year.
