B. Answer these questions

B. 1. Booker’s community had previously been enslaved by members of the
white race, were poor and had to start working at a young age to support
their families and themselves. Illiteracy also made them feel helpless. The
idea of starting a school for their community was, thus, very exciting as
Booker’s community would no longer be illiterate and helpless, and they
could now be independent and learned.
2. It was decided that each family would pay a certain amount to the teacher
every month. The teacher would visit one house every day and teach the
family members. Later, day- schools, night-schools and Sunday schools
were started and the teachers would teach the people over there.
3. Everyone wanted to learn how to read and write and become
independent. This enthusiasm among the people resulted in the day-
schools and night-schools becoming overcrowded. At times, many people
could not attend the schools because there was no room for them

C. Think and answer.

C. 1. Booker T Washington had a strong desire to learn when he was a kid. He
asked his mother to get him whichever book that she could. Though she was
poor, she got him a book somehow and thus began Booker’s journey of
education. Soon, the community organised teachers who would spend a day
in each house and teach the people. Later, schools were also started but
Booker was made to work in the salt-furnace by his step-father.
2. Schools were established but Booker’s step-father wanted him to work in
the salt- furnace. Booker would see the other children go to and from
school and would feel bad about his condition. He pleaded his cause to his
mother and a deal was struck between his step-father and him. He had to
rise up early and work till nine in the morning and then he could go to
school. He also had to return to the furnace and work another two hours
after school. He would often be late to school, so he moved the hands of
the clock in the salt-furnace to suit his timings. Despite these difficulties,
Booker did not give up on his desire to learn.

D. Discuss in class
The government promises free education to the poor people of the country, but poverty
overpowers the desire to learn and be educated. The children are mostly made to work as
labourers and in factories so that they can support their families. If the government starts
providing the poor people with jobs that offer job security and good wages, there would be
no need for the children to work. Apart from this, spreading awareness about the importance
of education is also essential.

Writing

Date: (Full form)

Dear Diary

Today was my first day at the day-school. It felt so amazing to begin

my formal education. I even made new friends. The teachers were
very helpful and understanding. They were patient with us and
taught us step-by-step. I learnt the alphabet properly today. I can
now recite the alphabet and even write it down and all this is just on
the first day of school! I can’t believe that my dream of education is
finally coming true. It took a lot of convincing from my mother’s
side to make my step-father ready to send me to school and not to
the salt-furnace. I’m really glad that he allowed me to take this
opportunity. I have decided that I will finish my education, become a
working man and help my family reach higher standards of living.
