Executive summary

Through a scheme run on behalf of the government by the Department for Education and

Employment. Such awards can provide market and competitive benefits to an organization. This

case study examines how British Steel Engineering Steels (BSES) used Total Quality

Management principles to establish a training framework to increase the knowledge and skills of

Health and Safety, thereby further improving business safety performance.


Introduction

British Steel Engineering Steels is committed to Total Quality Management. Many customers

perceive the quality of the product or service as being of equal or greater importance as price.

Total Quality Management has added value to British Steel Engineering Steels’ products and

services by addressing customer quality requirements and has made British Steel Engineering

Steels (BSES) a world leader in the manufacture of engineering steels.

A Total Quality culture

Total Quality Management creates a culture in addition to providing a set of guiding principles

and policies. In this culture, every employee, at every level, takes responsibility for meeting the

needs of the customer. Total Quality Management concerns people, not just policies and

procedures. When companies establish a Total Quality Management culture, they are usually

working towards becoming a learning organization. The learning organization continually works

towards improving its capacity to create its own future.

Health and Safety at work

British Steel Engineering Steels (BSES) used Total Quality Management principles to establish a

training framework to increase the knowledge and skills of Health and Safety.

BSES is an industrial organization has the potential to be hazardous working environment. The

business recognizes that safety attitudes and practices require continuous improvement.

Improving health and safety practices and procedures can eliminates lost work time through

accidents, increases productivity, reduces costs and improves morale. BSES regards the

achievement of the best possible accident prevention record as one of the highest priorities in

running the business.


The training cycle

The training cycle shows how to plan an effective training program which meets the needs of the

organization and the individual.

The training that is being offered in the British Steel Company is that it increases the knowledge

and skills and it improves business safety performance. That way the company would achieve

total quality in their management. Also having a training will lead to a positive change in

organizational culture. Training helps Employee to learned and develop new skills that they can

apply for their everyday work at the company.

Delivering the training

Their training can be beneficial as a part of their progress where it also acts as a key

differentiator that enables you to attract new customers in competitive business markets. Not

only is it a leading indicator used to measure customer loyalty and retention, it enables

businesses to identify unhappy customers, reduce customer losses and negative word of mouth

whilst increasing revenue.

Specific factors that helped BSES

The three factors that the (BSES) to implement the quality and safety in the organization are

Improvement of resources and capabilities of the employees working in the organization, Also,

all open lines of communication is important to an organization for it to be updated as always.

And lastly, documented safety policies and procedures are an important aspects to making the

overall improvement and trainings of each employees working in the organization.
