Figure. Sound Level

Meter
Title

Detection of Sound Level at Various Environment’s with Sound Meter and Data
Logger

Introduction:

A sound level meter is used for acoustic (sound that travels through air) measurements. It is
commonly a hand-held instrument with a microphone. The diaphragm of the microphone
responds to changes in air pressure caused by sound waves. That is why the instrument is
sometimes referred to as a Sound Pressure Level (SPL) Meter. This movement of the
diaphragm, i.e. the sound pressure deviation (pascal Pa), is converted into an electrical signal
(voltsV).

Sound level meters are commonly used in noise pollution studies for the quantification of
different kinds of noise, especially for industrial, environmental and aircraft noise.

Meter Description/Parts:

The meter has the following features:

 Microphone
 LCD display
 Power off
 Response and Hold switch
 A/C weighting and calibration switch
 Reset key (resets max hold reading)
 AC/DC analog output
 Battery compartment
Measuring Considerations:
There are a few considerations we need to take into account before taking any reading.
i. Use the windscreen
ii. Calibrate the apparatus
iii. Don’t use at high temp and humidity
iv. Keep meter and microphone dry
v. Avoid severe vibration while using
vi. Remove battery when meter is to be stored for longer periods

Procedure:
 Press ON/OFF to power ON / OFF
 Set range
 Set response timing
 Set A/C frequency weighting
 *A > use where stable sound or flat responses are present
 *C > use where stale or flat responses are present
 MAX hold
 Analog outputs

Reading Table:
Below in the table are the recorded readings taken using the sound level meter.
