Anglican Parish of the Upper Kennebecasis

Rev. Dr. Chris McMullen, Priest in Charge

Greeting, Call to Worship (Book of Alternative Services* # 9 p. 99)

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand;
repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1.15).
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be His kingdom, now and forever! Amen.
Come, let us worship God, our King!
Come, let us worship Christ, Our King and our God!
Come, let us worship Christ among us, our King and our God.
Holy God, Holy and Mighty,
Holy and immortal one, Have mercy upon us.

Hymn of Praise
“Rejoice the Lord Is King” CP #379
Rejoice, the Lord is King!
Your Lord and King Adore!
Rejoice, give thanks and sing
And triumph ever more.
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice; again I say, rejoice!
Jesus the Saviour reigns,
The God of truth and love;
When he had purged our stains,
He took his seat above.
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice; again I say, rejoice!
His kingdom cannot fail;
He rules o’er earth and heaven;
The keys of death and hell
Are to our Jesus given.
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice; again I say, rejoice!

(2)
He sits at God’s right hand
Till all his foes submit,
And bow to his command,
And fall beneath his feet.
Lift up your heart, lift up your voice;
Rejoice; again, I say, rejoice!
Rejoice in glorious hope;
Jesus, the judge shall come
And take his servants up
To their eternal home.
We soon shall hear the archangel’s voice;
The trump of God shall sound, rejoice!

Collect for the Day (BAS p. 348)

Almighty God, by grace alone you call us
and accept us in your service.
Strengthen us by your Spirit,
and make us worthy of your call;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.
First Scripture Lesson
I Corinthians 7: 29-31
Psalm 62: 6-14 (62:5-12 in Bible) (BAS pp. 782 f.)
6
For God alone my soul in silence waits;
truly, my hope is in him.
7
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken.
8
In God is my safety and my honour;
God is my strong rock and my refuge.
9
Put your trust in him always, O people,
pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge.
10
Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath,
even those of low estate cannot be trusted.
11
On the scales they are lighter than a breath,
all of them together.
12
Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride;
though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it.

(3)
13
God has spoken once, twice have I heard it,
that power belongs to God.
14
Steadfast love is yours, O Lord,
for you repay everyone according to his deeds.
Psalm Prayer: Lord God, in a threatening world we look to you as our
rock of hope. Hear us as we pour out our hearts to you, and give us
your grace and protection, through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Gospel Lesson
Mark 1: 14-20
Hymn of Faith
“Jesus Calls Us! O’er the Tumult” CP # 432
Jesus calls us! O’er the tumult
of our life’s wild restless sea,
day by day his sweet voice soundeth,
saying, “Christian, follow me!”
As of old Saint Andrew heard it
by the Galilean lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving for all his dear sake.
Jesus calls us from the worship
of the vain world’s golden store,
from each idol that would keep us,
saying, “Christian, love me more”.
In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still he calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love me more than these.”
Jesus calls us! By thy mercies,
Saviour, may we hear thy call,
give our hearts to thine obedience,
serve and love thee best of all.

An Affirmation of Faith from Australia
We believe in One God
Who made and loves all that is.
We believe in Jesus Christ,
God’s only Son, our Lord,
Who was born, lived, died and rose again,
And is coming to call all to account.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
Who calls, equips, and sends out God’s people,
Who brings all things to their true end.
This is our faith; the faith of the Church:
We believe in One God:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Hymn of Response
“I Come with Joy” CP # 60
I come with joy, a child of God,
forgiven, loved and free,
the life of Jesus to recall,
in love laid down for me.
I come with Christians far and near
to find, as all are fed...
The love that made us makes us one,
and strangers now are friends.
The spirit of the risen Christ,
unseen but ever near,
is in such friendship better known,
alive among us here.
Together met, together bound,
by all that God has done,
we’ll go with joy, to give the world
the love that makes us one.

Prayers of the People (BAS # 17, pp. 123 ff)
I ask your prayers for Gods people throughout the world,
For this gathering, for our bishop N,
And for all ministers and people.
Pray for the Church.
(Silence)
Almighty and everlasting God,
By your Spirit the whole body of your faithful people
Is governed and sanctified.
Receive our supplications and prayers,
Which we offer before you
For all members of your holy Church,
That in our vocation and ministry
We may truly and devoutly serve you;
Through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
I ask your prayers for peace,
For goodwill among nations,
And for the well-being of all people.
(Silence)
Almighty God,
Kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace,
And guide with your wisdom
Those who take counsel for the nations of the earth,
That justice and peace may increase,
Until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I ask your prayers for the poor, the sick, the hungry,
the oppressed, and those in prison.
Pray for those in any need or trouble.
(Silence)
Gracious God,
The comfort of all who sorrow,
The strength of all who suffer,
Hear the cry of those in misery and need.
In their afflictions show them your mercy,
And give us, we pray, the strength to serve them,

(Continued…)
(6)
For the sake of him who suffered for us,
Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I ask your prayers for the mission of the Church.
Pray for the coming of God’s kingdom
Among all nations and peoples.
(Silence)
O Lord our God,
You have made all races and nations to be one family,
And you sent your Son Jesus Christ
To proclaim the good news of salvation to all people.
Pour out your Spirit on the whole creation,
bring the nations of the world into your fellowship,
And hasten the coming of your kingdom.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
I ask your prayers for those who have died
In the peace of Christ,
And for those whose faith is known to God alone.
Pray that God may be glorified in all his saints.
(Silence)
O God, the giver of eternal life,
We give you thanks and praise
For the wonderful grace and virtue
Declared in all your saints.
Grant to us, and to all who have died
In the hope of the resurrection,
A share in the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ,
And fullness of joy in the fellowship of all your saints.
All this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us give thanks to Almighty God for all his goodness.
(Silence)
You are worthy, O Lord our God,
To receive glory and honour and power.
You are worthy to receive blessing and praise,
Now and for ever.
For yours is the majesty,
O Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
Your is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
Now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
Hymn of Dedication
“Will You Come and Follow Me?” CP # 430
Will you come and follow me
if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know
and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
Will you let my life be grown
in you and you in me?
Will you leave yourself behind
if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
in you and you in me?
…Will you love the “you” you hide
if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside
and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found
to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound
in you and you in me?
Christ, your summons echoes true
when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
and never be the same.
In your company I’ll go,
where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
in you and you in me!
