2.b. How self-appraisal contributes to a performance review?
3.(minimum 70 words)

4.The self-appraisal (also known as a self-evaluation or a self-assessment) is your opportunity to reflect on

the things you did well, and the things you didn’t do so well – but learned from this past year.
5.the employee self – evaluation ensures that employees prepare thoughtfully for their performance
development planning or appraisal meeting with their manager. It provides an useful opportunity for the
employees to seriously consider their level of performance and contribution.

6.

QUESTION 2
7.Describe peer appraisal and list at least one benefit of peer appraisal. (minimum 70 words).

8.Peer appraisal is a variation of 360 degree feedback in the performance appraisal process. Peers and
team mates provide a unique perspective on performance. While managers are best able to assess an
individual’s outcomes and results, peers provide insight into an individual’s interpersonal interactions and
skills.
9.Encouraging Recognition
10.Peer appraisal and feedback is not just about gathering more information for the performance review.
Providing vehicles for individuals to offer feedback to others encourages a culture of feedback and
recognition, and supports collaborations.

11.Question 3
12.a. Identify four components of a manager's role and responsibilities that are commonly measured by Key
Performance Indicators (KPIs).
13.b. Discuss how the KPIs may be measured.
14.(minimum 100 words)

organisation has customers it has to satisfy.
 Internal Process Quality: Companies need to make sure their services and products are to the expected
standards and that they optimize the way these products or services are delivered.
 Employee Satisfaction: Even though my last article was about the elimination of human job through the
use of artificial intelligence and big data robots, we can safely say that employees are still the most
important ingredients in any business. We all know that companies don’t do well if their employees are
not happy and this again applies to all enterprise.
 Financial Performance Index: To identify and understand the overall impact that the various financial
realities represented by your KPI numbers have on your business. Then, use the insights you acquire
from these invaluable financial management performance indicators to identify and implement changes
that correct problems with policies, processes, personnel, or products that are impacting one or more of
your KPI values.

Question 4
Identify and outline three personality type tests that are common in Australian workplaces (minimum 50 words).

 The Caliper Profile measures how an individual’s personality traits correlate to his or her job
performance. The test is made up of a few different types of questions. The most common type presents
you with a series of statement best aligns with your viewpoint.
 The Myers - Briggs Type Indicator
One of the most well – known tools for mapping employee personalities is the Myer – Briggs Type
Indicator (MBTI). According to CPI, the test’s publisher, 89 of the Fortune 100 companies use the MBTI
before hiring a new employee.
 The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI). The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) was developed in the
1980s and was originally used in a socio-context, but it’s now used to predict job performance.

Question 5
Discuss three advantages and three disadvantages of personality tests (minimum 70 words).

Advantages
 Knowing the unique information personality tests provide can help hiring managers assess a candidate’s
fit into company culture.
 Personality tests allow hiring managers to better understand how to keep individual employees engaged
and motivated at work.
 Well-designed, standardized assessments allow an organisation to improve its legal defensibilty by
providing a fairer method of candidate comparison.

Disadvantages
 Time. Personality tests can be time-consuming, which may lead to job candidate frustration or even loss
to other companies.
 Money. Personality tests can be costly to administer. Costs can range between $100 to $5,000 per
candidate, according to Hellos HR (2014).
 Accuracy. While useful for gaining behavioural insight, personality tests are not always the best
indicators of how successful an individual will be in a job. This is particularly true with certain tests such
as the Four Quadrant (4-Q) test and Myers-Briggs assessment. Although these tests have not been
validated as strong measures of job performance, they remain popular among employers.

QUESTION 6
Explain why it is important for leaders to be self-aware in regard to their behaviour (minimum 40 words)

Manage personal work priorities and professional development

The importance of self-awareness in leadership development is really highlighted by the work, emotional
intelligence the ability to mange ourselves and our relationships effectively – consists of four fundamental
capabilities; self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skills, reinforce the importance
of self-awareness. Their research indicates that self-awareness and self-management are absolutely
essential to authentic leadership. The organisation to hiring the most talented and the brightest individual
when they do not possess first the personal and social skills needed to be an effective leader. And the first
step to obtaining these personal and social skills is self-awareness; the essence of effective leadership. If
you want to be an effective leader, study and learn about your best leadership tool. Reflect upon the impact
your interactions have on others. Listen to the feedback others offer on your behaviour and style. Ask for
candid feedback on your leadership. Take every opportunity to conduct assessments of your personality and
style through the use of valid instruments. Working to understand and develop yourself will pay huge
dividends when you are put into that leadership role.

Question 7
Discuss at least 3 advantages of conducting behavioural assessments/appraisals (minimum 70 words).

They provide a document of employee performance over a specific period of time. They provide a structure
where a manager can meet and discuss performance with an employee. They allow a manager the
opportunity to provide the employee with feedback about their performance and discuss how well the
employee goals were accomplished. They provide a structured process for an employee to clarify
expectations and discuss issues with their manager. They provide a structure for thinking through and
planning the upcoming year and developing employer goals. They can motivate employees if supported by a
good merit increase and compensation system.
Organisations that incorporates performance appraisals into a comprehensive performance management
system and use them to implement business goals have an advantage for accomplishing their goals and
ultimately their strategic plan.

QUESTION 8
a. Describe ‘personal development planning’ in two or three paragraphs.
b. What is a personal development plan aligned to?
(no more than 100 words)

A Personal Development Plan is a written account of self-reflection and improvement, which doubles up as a
detailed action plan used to fulfil academic, personal, or career based goals.
It’s usually created within the workplace or when studying (with guidance from your manager or tutor), and
works by allowing you to establish your aims, recognise your strengths and weakness, and identify the need
for improvement.
Objectives are put in place based on the area you’d like to improve on, and the plan consists of your own
personalised actions that will help you to achieve them.

QUESTION 9
Describe each of the letters in the acronym SMART in relation to goals (no more than 70 words).

Everyone who wants to pursue a goal, known that is important to provide a good description of this goal.
Empty slogans do not bring satisfactory results. Making a concrete analysis in advance will help you to get to
the finishing line. A useful method to achieve this is the so-called SMART Goals or simply SMART, The
SMART Goals definition/acronym stands for Specific, Measurable, Acceptable, Realistic and Time-bound.

Specific:

Manage personal work priorities and professional development

A vague goal such as ‘our company wants to enhance its turnover ‘indicates that the current situation is not
satisfactory. Apparently the turnover must be enhanced. However, there is not a real plan to realize this
goal’.

Measurable:
Each SMART goal has a starting point as well as a finishing point and they are indication of the quality of the
effort to be made. A system, method and procedure must mentioned which determine to what extent the
target moment has been achieved.

Acceptable (Ambitious)
SMART goals must be acceptable for you as well as for the group or the department. For managers it is
important to create support for the goal among the employees. Only then the goal stands a chance of
succeeding.

Realistic (Relevant)
A realistic goal takes into account the practical situation and the work in which everyone is involved. It is
impossible that everyone’s focus will be on the same goal all the time, after all, there are always other issues
requiring attention.

QUESTION 10
Discuss the concept of the Pareto Principle in relation to time management (minimum 50 words).

You’ll probably agree that not everyone can work at full capacity 100% of the time. By extension, we can say
that only a percentage of your efforts will be conducted at full capacity. And by further extension, we can say
that this percentage will account for a large part of your gain.
This logic, so to speak, is related to something known as the Pareto Principle, which has more commonly
been called the 80/20 rule. Let’s learn what this is and how it applies to time management.
The 80/20 rule is pretty simple to define. In short, 20% of your efforts will end up producing 80% of your
results. So, you should manage your time in a way that focuses on that 20% instead of the other 80% or
evenly over the entire 100%.
The 80/20 rule can be simplified to three key steps:
 Identify what your key results or goals are.
 Apply the 80/20 rule to prioritise your tasks.
 Protect the most important activities from the least important activities.

QUESTION 11
Discuss three ways to manage time at work (minimum 40 words).

1. Know your goals.

Make sure you’re engaging in activities that support your business goals, both short-and-long-term.
Everything else is a potential time-waster. Your daily plan should revolve around working on tasks and
activities that directly relate to generating income and growing your business.

2. Prioritize wisely
Stephen Covey, co-author of First Things First, offers an organizational tool for your to-do list based on how
important and urgent tasks are.

3. Just say no.

You’re the boss. If you have to decline a request in order to attend to what’s truly important and urgent, do
not hesitate to do so. The same goes for any projects or activities that you’ve determined are headed
nowhere. Be prepared to move on to more products tasks. Learn from the experience to avoid wasting time
later on.

QUESTION 12
Discuss the negative effect of technology on work-life balance (minimum 40 words).

While work-life balance is a much-discussed topic in the world of HR, new findings have given us a more
valuable insight into the role technology plays.
With technology simplifying how and where we can access communications, a survey by CarerBuilder found
a half of workers check their email outside of working hours. More worrying is the fact that 24 per cent of
workers do so while engaged in activities with family and friends.

QUESTION 13
Describe three strategies that a business can use to ensure their workers maintain work-life balance?
(no more than 40 words).

1. Exercise Access
Office GymOne of the most positive ways to reduce stress is exercise, and every able-bodied adult should
be getting at least 30 minutes of it per day. Employees who eat healthy and exercise are less at risk of
getting sick and missing days from work, which could ultimately detract from your company’s productivity.

2. Childcare Services.
As a parent, childcare duties don’t always stop when you leave for work in the morning. A family-friendly
work environment has proven to benefit both employers and employees in a variety of different industries.

3. Company Outings
One of the best ways to boost employee morale and help workers get to know each other in a non-stressful
capacity is by offering an occasional company outing. This type of outing can be as low-key or as
extravagant as you like, depending on your company’s culture and budget for such things.

QUESTION 14

1. Visual: The occipital lobes at the back of the brain manage the visual sense. Both the occipital and
parietal lobes manage spatial orientation.
2. Aural: The temporal lobes handle aural content. The right temporal lobe is especially important for music.
3. Verbal: The temporal and frontal lobes, especially two specialized areas (in the left hemisphere of these
two lobes).
4. Physical: The cerebellum and the motor cortex (at the back of the frontal lobes) handle much of our
physical movement.
5. Logical: The parietal lobes, specially the left side, drive our logical thinking.

QUESTION 15
Discuss why our preferred learning style is important and needs to be taken into consideration (no more than
60 words).

The Importance of Learning styles

Learning Styles
Most educators recognise three broad learning styles in children – visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. Each
style refers to a preferred way of receiving and processing information in order to learn. When you help your
child to learn, you probably favour teaching methods that suit your own learning style. That’s because those
approaches work for you and you believe them to be the most effective. Taking a moment to discover and
understand your child’s learning style, as well as your own, can quickly turn hard work into plain sailing.

QUESTION 16
a. List five ways of learning new skills at work.
b. Identify at least one learning style that would benefit from each suggestion.
(minimum 80 words)

Manage personal work priorities and professional development

1. Ditch your learning style

As much as we’d like to believe that we learn better in a certain style, the truth is, these have little impact on
our ability to learn.

2. Make it more meaningful for yourself

One main reason why “learning styles” don’t work is that we learn things in terms of meaning. Finding
meaning in our learning is the key.

3. Learn by doing
Humans are natural learners – and we learn best when we perform the tasks we’re trying to learn. No matter
how good your grades were at college, most of your learning takes place once you enter the workplace and
start applying what you’ve learned.

4. Study the greats, and then practice

Aspiring writers hear over and over that the best way to write better is to read a lot of books, especially the
classics. Why? Because they’ll learn a lot more by studying the writing styles of great writers, than they
would by taking a course on writing.

5. Teach what you learn

One of the more surprising ways you can learn a new skill is to teach it to someone else. Much research has
been done on this phenomenon, but one study illustrate it particularly well.

PART B
RESEARCH REPORT

What is stress?
Everyone experiences stress at some stage in their life. It is a way for us to know that something in our life is
causing us concern and is affecting how we are thinking and feeling.
Stress is not always bad. In small doses, it can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your
best, but when you are constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and bond pay the price.

Causes of stress
The situations and pressures that causes stress are known as stressors. There are 2 types of stressors:
 Eternal (where outside forces act on us)
 Internal (self-generated, we have some control over it)

Version: v2.0/April 2019

Choice Academic College Page 22 of 48
RTO 41177 | CRICOS 03652
BSBWOR501
Manage personal work priorities and professional development

External causes of stress:

 Major life changes
 Work
 Relationship difficulties
 Financial problems
 Being too busy
 Children and family

Internal causes of stress (self-generated)

 Inability to accept uncertainty
 Doubt
 Negative self-talk
 Unrealistic expectations
 Perfectionism
 Lack of assertiveness

Work-life balance
Work-life balance is adjusting your day-to-day activities a sense of balance between work life and personal life.
Some benefits of a healthy work-life balance include:
 Reduced stress levels, at work and at home
 Greater focus and concentration
 Higher levels of job satisfaction
 The opportunity to participate more fully in family and social life
 More time to pursue personal goals and hobbies
 Improved health.

Four health and wellbeing programs

1. On-site fitness centres
This might be considered the granddaddy of all workplace wellness programs. Not everyone can provide their
team members with a 72,000 square foot fitness centre, but Cheapsake Energy Corp, considers it a completely
justified expense for recruiting and retaining healthy team members. The fitness centre offers teams members
an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a rock climbing wall, and access to personal trainers.
What makes this program great? The fitness centre is just one part of the company’s ‘Living Well’ program,
which offers cash incentives for team members who participate and meet their goals in various areas of the
program. Cheapsake Energy Corp, clearly cares about their team members’ well-being and has provided them
with as much support as possible to help them reach their goals.

2. Smoking cessation programs

It’s no secret that, on average, team members who smoke cigarettes cost their employers more money due to
health issues compared to non-smokers. Some workplaces have found it in their best interest, both ethically
and economically, to offer smoking cessation programs to their team members.
Union Pacific Railroad offers a smoking cessation program that consists of lifestyle coaching, as well as
pharmacological assistance, to their team members. Their program has helped reduced the number of their
team members who smoke from 40% in the 1990s to 17% in 2007.

Version: v2.0/April 2019

Choice Academic College Page 23 of 48
RTO 41177 | CRICOS 03652
BSBWOR501
Manage personal work priorities and professional development

What makes this program great? Union Pacific Railroad understands that pharmaceuticals alone may not work
for all team members. The addition of coaching for team members trying to quit smoking may be difference
between success and failure.

3. Transit options
Encouraging alternative methods of transportation, such as bike sharing or public transit incentives, are
beneficial to the workplace and the future of the environment. Facebook’s campus in Palo Alto offers a bike-
sharing program for team members to cycle to places around campus rather than driving. At Rise, we
encourage our team members to take public transit by reimbursing employees for their transit passes.

4. Paramedical services
Companies like Google and Boeing offer paramedical services, like massage therapy, to their team members
while they’re at work. In fact, Google employs a massage program manager, as just one of 35 massage
therapists employed in their United States offices. Massage therapists go through an interview process at the
company as well, where they demonstrate their skills (which sounds great for the interviewer).
What makes this program great? There’s reason why Google is consistently rated one of the best workplace in
the world. Going above and beyond what team members expect from their employer is a great way to
encourage a reciprocal effort. A relaxed and calm team member is a joy to have in the workplace, which is
likely the main reason that Google offers the service.

Sales & Marketing Manager

What skills and knowledge do you consider are most important to a manager?
1. Good communication
Having good communication skills is probably the most important skill of all for managers to have. Unless
you can properly communicate with those you supervise, the rest of the skills really won’t mature. In
numerous types of management tasks, the most common and first thing that needs to be done is to
communicate your opinions, expectations and needs to others. You shouldn’t be a Manager if you don’t
enjoy working with people. You also need to be able to send others the right messages and make sure
that they understand you. The type of power that you use for persuading others on your views is also very
important.
2. Good organisation
Probably the second most important skill that you can have as a Manager is the ability to organise. You
need to be able to come up with a plan and then schedule, organise and follow it. This also involves
understand understanding your company’s processes and rules as well as among individuals. You must
be able to protect what will happen and at what time.
3. Team Building
Good Managers know how to keep their teams intact. The well being of team members does not benefits
from having competition within the team. However, competition between teams can be very stimulating
and healthy. If one of the team members speeds ahead and leaves the rest of the members behind without
helping them, the team will most likely fail. A good Manager will notice these irregularities very easily. He
or she will attempt to correct the situation through having discussions with the team, mostly through
listening to members. To a great extent, a successful and healthy team relies on the trust between
members and with the Manager. If a Manager is able to build trust systematically, the team members will
feel much more committed and appreciated.

4. Leadership
It isn’t enough to just listen to the problems of co-workers. A good Manager needs to solve these problem
and prove that he or she is committed to the goals of the team. It is also the Manager’s responsibility to
define goals along with team members and then assign responsibility to various team members clearly. A
good Manager will have a clear vision in terms of the direction he or she wants the team to be headed in.
Team members need to be ‘infected’ with this vision so that everyone is headed in the same direction.
5. Ability to deal with changes effectively
Many Managers are thoroughly familiar with the entire working process. This allows them to do things in
an almost automatic manner. A good Manager is adaptable and flexible. When faced with obstacles, he or
she has the ability to react quickly. Stress doesn’t prevent the Manager from making the right decisions for
the team and company.
What skills and knowledge might be important to acquire based on industry trends?
 Production, processing & Roasting
 Customer service attitude
 Availability to work within opening hours (including weekends and holidays)
 Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage and motivate a team.

Which professional development activity have you participated in recently/would like to participate in soon?
On-site Sales Training Programs
Hoffman Training
Length: one day
Focus: prospecting, discovery, negotiation, closing and sales management
How was this/would this be beneficial to you?
Hoffman workshops span the entire sales cycle, from getting your prospect’s attention to successfully
winning their business. Their workshops and corporate training programs are packed with information
which means they’ve ideal for salespeople who are eager to improve their performance.

Would you recommend this professional development activity to others? Why or why not?
Yes.
Because the attendees will also have the opportunity to create their own stories – so they’ll be ready to
inspire change in their prospects by the time they leave.

Is there any professional development you think is critical for a manager in your field?
Yes.
