Chapter 2

BATS EVERYWHERE

Bruce couldn’t ___SLEEP__ that night. He remembered his __LIFE___ after Joe Chill killed his
parents. He __WAS__ so unhappy and so angry. He went from ___SCHOOL___ to
____SCHOOL__ and university to university. He never stayed long in one _PLACE____.

Bruce is ____TWENTY___. He is going back to Gotham by train. Alfred meets him at the
station. On the way to Wayne Manor he sees that ____EVERITHING______ is different.
Everywhere is ___DIRTY__. Many __HOUAS_____ are empty. Many shops are closed.
__PEOPLE____ are sleeping on the streets.
“Things are _VERY____ bad in Gotham now, Master Bruce” Alfred tells him. “But Wayne Manor
is still your home. Your father was a great man, and one day you will be a ___GREAT__ man
too”.
It is the ____AFT______ on the same __DAY__. Bruce is sitting in his bed. “Joe Chill will be
free ___TODAY___” he thinks. “He killed my parents ___TWELVE___ years _AGO___. And
today I’m going to kill him. He takes a gun out of his bag.
His old ___FRIEND___, Rachel, comes to the house. She is an Assistant District Attorney- an
important lawyer in Gotham now. “Wow!” he thinks when he __SAID__ her. “She is so
___BEAUTI___”. They drive to the ____PRESENT___
“Why are they freeing Joe Chill today?__HE ASKS___.
“When he was in prison, he was in a room with Carmine Falcone, the ____FAMOUS___
criminal”, Rachel explains. “They ___TALK____ and he learned lots of things about Falcone.
He’s going to ____GIVE___ that information to the police”
They __ARRIVE______ outside the prison. The _______NEWSPPER___ people are waiting.
Joe Chills comes out. There are ___POLICE_____ all around him. Bruce gets out of Rachel’s
car and ___WALKS___ towards Chill. He has his hand in his pocket… on his gun.

But-suddenly- a ____BLOUND___ woman pushes through the people. She runs up to Chill.
She has a gun in _HER___ hand. “Falcone says” “Hi, Joe”, she shouts. BANG! BANG! She
kills Joe Chill.

Joe Chill was dead. But Bruce didn’t ____FEEL__ ___BETTER____. It wasn’t the answer.

Ducard took Bruce’s blue ___FLOWWR___. He pulled the dry _FLOWER______ into little
pieces and made a small fire with it. “Smell your flower now”, he said to Bruce.
Bruce put his __NOSE__ near the __SMOKE____. The smell was terrible. He suddenly started
to remember the worst days of his _LIFE____… He was falling down the well… He was seeing
his parents’ ___BLOOD___ in the street…
“You are frightened of these __THINGS____. Look at them. Fight them. Now!” said Ducard.
He __POINTED_____ to a large wooden _BOX___. Bruce opened it.
WHOOOOSSSH!
_____HUNDRED_____ of bats flew out of the box. Bruce _____WANTED____ to shout and
run. But he didn’t.
‘No,’ he thought, ‘I __MOST____ _BE___ strong.’
He stood there quietly. He didn’t move. He didn’t say a __WHAT____.
‘Well done!’ said raid Ra’s al Ghul. ‘You are not frightened __NOW___. You are ready to
_JOIN____ the ninjas.’
He gave Bruce a light. ‘__TAKE____ this light and give your life to me.’
Bruce took the light. ‘Where must I go with your men?’
He asked.
‘To Gotham,’ _____ANSWER_____ Ra’s al Ghul. ‘Gotham must die.
You must kill all the _____PEOPLE___ there.’
‘No!’ shouted Bruce. This couldn’t be real.
‘We have ____TOLD YOU____ you many things,’ said Ra’s al Ghul.
‘Now you ___MUSS_____ do this for us.’
‘I won’t do it!’ ______SHOUTED__ Bruce. He threw the light on the wooden floor. It broke. A fire
started and moved ______QUICKLY___ around the room. It grew and grew. It reached the
boxes of explosives in the cupboards. They stared to explode
BANG! BANG!
Ninjas ran everywhere. The roof ____START____ to fall. It fell on Ra’s al Ghul and killed him.
As Bruce ___RAN____ to the door, he saw Ducard’s body on the floor. He wasn’t dead. Bruce
___PUT____ Ducards out of the building and into the snow.
He pulled him down the ___ICE__ mountain. Ducard was very heavy. Once he
___ALMOST______ fell over the edge of the mountain, but Bruce ___SAY___ him.
After some time they ___CAME____ to some houses, Bruce left Ducard with an old man
___THERE______.
“You __SAY_____ his life. I will tell him” said the old man.
‘____WHERE____ are you going?’
‘I’m going home,’ said Bruce.
Bruce _____WALK_____ down the rest of the mountain. He phoned Alfred.
‘I ____NEED___ you, Alfred,’ he said,’ please come and __GET__ me.’
Alfred ___FLEW___ to Bhutan in the Wayne family plane and took Bruce __BACK TO___ ___
Gotham. He told Bruce all about the terrible _____CHANGES___ in Gotham. Carmine Falcone
was the crime boss in the city now. Everyone __WAS___ frightened of him. And William Earle
sat in Bruce’s father’s chair at Wayne enterprises, the Wayne family _____BUSSINES____ in
Wayne tower.
Bruce Wayne is ___DEAD____,’ Earle told everyone, ‘I’m the boss now.’
Bruce listened _____CAREFULY_____ to Alfred.
‘I’m going to save Gotham, Alfred,’ he____SAID__.
When they ______RIDE___ home Wayne manor, Bruce ___SAW__ a small black thing high on
the wall
What’s __THAT____, Alfred? He asked.
‘It´s a__BAT__, sir’, answered Alfred. ‘There are lots of ___BATS__ around here’
Bruce ____SUDENLY______ ran out of the house. He ran to the well in the garden and
___CLIMB____ down and down. He reached the __FLOOR____. It was very dark but he could
feel a ___COLD___ wind. He found a hole in the __CLIMB____ and climbed through. He could
hear water. It was quite near. He followed the ____BLACK___ walls until they opened into a big
cave. A river ran through the cave. And ___EREYWHERE______ there were bats hundreds
and hundreds of bats.
Bruce smiled.
The next morning Bruce put on a __NEW___ suit and went to Wayne Tower.
The woman at the _FRONT____ desk at Wayne Enterprise tried to stop him. “You can’t __GO_
in there”, she said. “They’re ___HAVING______ a business meeting”
But Bruce opened the door and ____WENT___ it. There were a lot of men sitting
_____AROUND____ a long table. And at the end of the TABLE was William Earle.

“Good _____MORNING____, Mr. Earle. Good morning everyone”; said Bruce.

Earle’s face went ___WAIT____ but he quickly tried to smile. “My boy! How ___NICE__ to see
you” He said. “You’re back. What a ______SURPIRSE___! A nice surprise!”

“I’ve come back to work here”, said Bruce. “I want to learn the family business”.

Bruce started to __WALK____in Applied Sciences office. This was the new ideas office, but
Wayne Enterprises didn’t seem to be very ____INTERESTED____ in new ideas these days.
The only ___PERSON___ person in the __OFFICE_____ was Lucius Fox. Lucius was a friend
of Bruce’s father, before he died.
Bruce looked around the big room. It was full of ____STRANGE____ and exciting things.

“What’s___THIS___?” he asked, and ___POINTED___ to a black suit.

“It’s a body suit”, said Lucius. “It can stop a knife. It can even stop a gun”.
“Can I ___HAVEN______ it?” asked Bruce.
“Of course”, said Lucius. “All ____THESE____ things are yours anyway”.

Bruce took the ____BODY SUIT__ ______ home and down to the cave. “Soon”, he thought, “I’ll
be __READY______”.
