Summary of testing:
The Skystream 3.7 turbine (without the blades) was tested according to IEC60529, category ‘IPX6’. The
purpose of testing was to verify the conformance of the sample to the before mentioned category. In
addition a hipot (dielectric strength-) requested by the customer was performed prior and after the rain test
between the electrical connection (Line / Neutral) and metal enclosure of the turbine.
The test sample was mounted on a pole as shown in the photographs at the end of this report. The IPX6
test apparatus was adjusted as per clause 14.2.6 of IEC 60529 and the surfaces were sprayed from all
practicable directions for a total testing time of 4 min. The sample then was checked for dielectric strength
between the electrical connection and enclosure of the turbine (PE-GND connection) for one minute with
passing results
After the dielectric strength test the sample was opened for inspection and no water intrusion was noted.

Test set-up: The test sample was set-up outside the building of TUV Rheinland of North America,
Carlsbad Office, on a parking lot (leveled); the test was performed with TUV
Rheinland’s Rain Tester using the equipment for category IPX6-testing
(2 bins filled with water [total: 200l ], water pump [gas driven], nozzle [12.5 mm dia]
with flow meter);
The testing was performed in two sessions (2 x 200l for 2 min each session). After the
first session the two water bins were refilled and the testing arrangement was adjusted
to better cover the three remaining sides of the sample. The time between the first and
the second session was approx. 10 min.
The water jet hose nozzle was hold in a distance of 2.5 to 3.0m during the test, all
sides of the test samples were tested for a total time of 4 min. (2 sessions of 2 min.
each), adjusting the water flow rate to 100l +/- 5%.
The reading on the flow meter was verified before the testing by filling a 5 Gallon
bucket (18.9l) within 10.8 – 11.9 seconds.
(For Photographs of test set-up / testing refer to last page)
Result: After the rain test a Hipot test (1.000Vac for basic insulation) was performed.
Then the test sample was carefully opened. No evidence of water / water drops was
found on the gasket of the hatchcover and inside the unit. The inside of the turbine with
all electrical components was carefully checked.
*) For IPX6-testing the gas driven pump was adjusted to show a water flow of approx. 95 to 100 l/min. A
5Gal-bucket (18.75l) was filled with water and the time was measured to be within 10.8 and 11.9s. The test
was repeated 5 times to get an average. This procedure confirms the flowrate of ~100l/min.
**) The hipot test voltage and leakage current during the testing was verified with two digital multimeters for better and
more accurate readings:
