Emotions

Throughout the past 5 weeks, Organisational Behaviour has taught me a lot about myself and how it has
shaped me to be the person I am today. First of all, during the lectures, one question hit me really hard.
Are we thinking creatures that feel, or feeling creatures that think ? Personally, I am a person that in
very in touch with my emotions , therefore making me fairly emotional. Having a personality type of
INFP-T , I am experience my emotions on an intense level and this often affects my mood. Many things
affect emotions negatively and positively. Most emotions are tied to physical needs and wants of the
human body. Examples that source emotions are time of day, day of week, stress, social activities,
sleep ,exercise ,gender. This generation have been experiencing emotions more intense then ever,
bringing both positive and negative impacts in our society. This can be explained by the Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs. The Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory usually displayed as a pyramid with
physiological needs at the bottom as the most important layer. This is followed by safety needs, social
belonging, self esteem , and lastly self actualization. This theory was created to study how humans are
behaviorally motivated. For individuals to be motivated, each level must be satisfied first to each
individual before moving on the next level. Due to the growth of our country, our physiological needs
such as food, water, rest have been fulfilled giving us the liberty to move up past safety needs to
Belongingness and love needs. With our generation moved up to psychological needs, youths can focus
on developing and experiencing them in a more intense way. Despite being a student, the affective
events theory can be applied to how students react emotionally to situations in school that affects their
performance and satisfaction. AET ( Affective evets theory ) is a theory to explain the bridge between
emotions and feelings and how if affects job satisfaction , job performance and behaviours. Underlying
AET is a belief that human behaviours are guided by emotions. The way a lecturer approaches a class
and teaches it will greatly affect how the class behaves. A lecturer that is optimistic and encouraging will
result in better morale among students leading to a change of mood and emotions. This results in a good
behaviour that will boost their attitude towards the module and put in more effort. However, certain
lecturers have the idea that discouraging students and comparing them to other students will motivate
them more to do better. This often results in negative emotions and from my experience, rude and
uninterested behaviours towards lecturers. I realised that this theory is also applicable to me in group
projects. My group leaders are generally quiet and reserved people. However, they are very positive and
encouraging. Despite walking into this group project without knowing majority of my group mates,
because of how meetings are carried out and how the other group members work together, I felt very
comfortable with all of them. I feel like I have found a sense of belonging among this group of people
and that has really helped me to excel in this group project as I do not want to let any of them down. I
take my role in this project seriously by choice and I am happy doing it.

Motivation

The Self-determinations theory is where the three inherent psychological needs that everyone has is
required to be met for their psychological well-being to be maximized. The three psychological needs
are Autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Autonomy is the need to feel like they are incharge of
their actions. People have an internal aversion to being controlled and it is required for them to feel that
they have the freedom to decide how they want to carry out tasks. Competence is the need to feel that
they have what it takes to carry out tasks well and decide the outcomes. Relatedness is the need to feel
included as part of a group. Personally, I am someone that is not often motivated. However, it is mostly
because I am usually uninterested in the things that I am required to do. With my personality type, I am
often too idealistic and have a very wild imagination. This often causes me to explore my own mind and
be in my own fantasy. However, I can be extremely motivated when it comes to things of my interest, if I
make it my interest. Previously , in the first year of Poly, I was not a very good student. This was the
result of chasing distractions and unrealistic emotions. However, ever since I have stepped into this year,
I have set my heart and mind to pulling up my GPA and putting in my best efforts in individual
assignments and group projects. I have been doing well and working hard in group projects as I have
realised through this module that I have the power to control what I want. I can choose to do well and
work hard, and even if I do not know how to , I can always ask my friends. Through this , I have achieved
autonomy. I am thankful that through this, I always had a friend that supported me and had my back.
Qin Yuan has always told me that he believed in me even if others did not and he was very invested In
me doing well and excelling. He helped me get through self pity and I felt competent . Through my
project management group project, I have also found an unlikely group of friends that I never knew
would click so well. I know for a fact that this has motivated me to be a better group mate and an
individual that wants to do well. I would really love to be able to motivate others and be an
encouragement to others as much as possible like How Qin Yuan has done for me.
