Career Interview Reflection

1. I’ve interviewed Tiffney about her career as a Vet technician. I saw her interview on
Youtube. Her youtube contact name is Kelli, where she has over 18 subscribers.
One of the things she talks about is a difficult time she had as a vet technician. She
talks about the emotional side of this career. For example, she had a client come in
a couple of times in which she already knew due to her experience what was wrong
with the animal. She knew it was time for the dog to get put down. One of the most
difficult things as a vet technician is when the animal’s family enters the room to say
their final goodbyes. She just feels really sad for the family and what is going to
happen next.
2. A typical day as a vet technician looks like seeing sick and injured animals. It is a
vet technician's responsibility to know what is going to occur next to prepare a
veterinarian as best as possible. Tiffany said “at the end of the day I remember that
this is what they do''. A typical morning for a vet technician involves receiving
animals in order to prepare them for surgery, giving the anesthesia or blood test,
also checking if they have any crushing, do a blood sample and injection and
observing animals.
3. The abilities and skills you need as a vet technician are being able to do heavy
lifting, being good with animals, being able to clean and communicate with staff.
Kelli mentioned that she would have to pick up dogs and handle some gross aspects
of the job. For example, when dogs walk up from anesthesia, if the dog is not used
to it, they could have diarrhea which you have to clean up and sometimes it smells
really bad. You have to be able to see surgery and help around. She says it's a
stressful job depending on the positions you work. You have to be going up and
down, also be dealing with emotional clients about their dogs getting put down or
them getting angry so it is also a physical job too.
4. Some facts I was not aware of include not knowing I would be dealing with people. I
thought I would only be taking the dogs into their room and holding them. Another
thing I was not aware of is if the doctor needs help or the doctor needs help in
surgery I will be there to assist.
5. The aspects of this career that are most appealing to me are, being the assistant of
the doctor for instance, holding or taking the animal to a different room is appealing.
It is appealing to me because it is an easy and a fun task to do in this career. Also,
testing blood samples and injecting the animal is really interesting to me because I
have never injected any animal and I think it will be a fun experience for me. I
believe that this part of the career is going to be very interesting and I will enjoy it
and have fun.

6. What is not going to be appealing to me is talking to the patient's owner. I agree with
this because I would not like it if they would get mad at me and yell at me.
Especially if I am the one that is not going to be operating the animals just assisting
the doctor. I am definitely not going to enjoy the part when I have to put down the
animals. I also agree with this one and I think this position is going to be the hardest
part because I will get emotional and I am afraid I'm not going to act professional in
this task.
7. I can compare my strengths with this career because I am an organizer and I am
dependable, someone that is trustworthy and people count on me to do what I
promise them I will do. Also, I am someone who starts friendships and keeps them
for a long time. My interests are getting things done the right way which is what the
position will be asking from me. My value is that I am loyal to people and would
achieve my commitments.
8. These are some things that I would have to prepare for before starting this career
which are: talking skills, shyness and nervousness. The reason why I have to
improve my talking skills is because I do not explain myself sometimes when I am
talking to others or giving information. I have known throughout my years, I am a shy
person and I need to be more talkative and open to people. It is very important to
improve my shyness so people can ask you for help and trust you. Also, being a vet
technician requires you to talk to the patients owners about what is happening and I
can not be shy or nervous around patient owners.
9. This interview has helped me understand how vet technicians work and what I will
be doing if I pursue this career. Also, it helped me see what I have to prepare and
improve before getting any job. Yes, it will be stressful and would not be an easy job
to do but no job is easy. This influenced me into understanding how vet technicians
work.
