Circular Motion

Directions: Solve the following problems carefully. Round off your final
answers into four decimal places. (20 points)

1. The ball is tied to a string to whirl it having a radius of 40.0 cm at a velocity
of 2.5 m/s. What will be the acceleration of the ball?

Answer : The acceleration of the ball is 15.6250 m/s2 .

2. One of Jupiter’s moon, Io, has a mean orbital radius of 4.22 x 108 m and a
period of 1.53 x 105 s. Find the mean orbital radius of another Jupiter’s
moon, Callisto, whose period is 1.44 x 106 s.

Answer : 3.9718 x 109 m is the mean orbital radius of another Jupiter’s moon, Callisto.
3. Haley’s Comet can only be viewed once in every 76 years. How fast is it
moving if it is 1.56 x 1020 m away from the Earth? If its mass is about 3,000
kg, how much force is keeping it in orbit?

Answer : There is 3.2165 x 10 N force that keeps it in the orbit.

4. How long does it take a 50-kg runner to run a circular track starting and
ending at the same point, if the radius of the track is 30 m? A centripetal
force of 68 N keeps him running at a constant speed in a circular path.

Answer : It takes 29.5101 s to run a circular track.
