Of the four properties of ’ﺍاﺳﻢs, we have thus far covered Status, Number, and Gender. Now we
will study the final property: Type.
There are two categories of type:
1. Common: words that are general
a. Examples: a book, a teacher, a cat
2. Proper: words that are specific
a. Examples: that book, the teacher, my cat
There are 7 categories for proper words. If a word does not fall under these categories, it must
be common:
1. Proper names
a. Names of people or places
i. Examples: Alya, Touqeer, Dallas, Chicago
2. Words with ﺍاﻝل
a. ﺍاﻝلmeans ‘the’
b. Words with ﺍاﻝل cannot have tanween: ﻣﺴﻠ ٌﻢ becomes ﺍاﻟﻤﺴﻠ ُﻢ
i. Note that this does not mean words with ﺍاﻝل are light (recall that light ’ﺍاﺳﻢs
do not take tanween). When a word has an ﺍاﻝل, it is neither
light
nor
heavy.
c. Handy tip: if you see an ﺍاﺳﻢ with a tanween, the ﺍاﺳﻢ is common
3. Pronouns
a. Examples: he, you, I, we, they, us, me
4. Pointers
a. Examples: this, that, these, those
5. Ism Mowsool
a. Examples: ْﺍاَﻟﱠ ِﺬﻱي, َﺍاَﻟﱠ ِﺬ ْﻳﯾﻦ, ﺍاَﻟﱠﺘِ ْﻲ, etc.
6. The one being called ( )ﻳﯾﺎ

a. In Arabic we use ﻳﯾﺎ to call someone. It means ‘hey!’ The word after it will always
be proper.
i. We can say “Hey, boy” and that boy will be proper because he is
specifically the one being called
7. If the ﺍاﺳﻢ after ‘of’ is proper, then the ﺍاﺳﻢ before ‘of’ is proper
