Lesson Review

Now  that  we  have  understood  and  memorized  both  independent  and  attached  pronouns,  we
move  on  to  a  more  advanced  study  of  pronouns.  Whenever  you  see  an  ‫ ﺍاﺳﻢ‬ and  a  pronoun
َ ‫ ُﻣ‬ and  the  attached  pronoun  is  a  ‫ﻀﺎﻑف ﺇإِﻟَﻴﯿْﻪﮫ‬
attached  to  it,  that  ‫ ﺍاﺳﻢ‬ is  actually  a  ‫ﻀﺎﻑف‬ َ ‫ ُﻣ‬.  Recall  that
between  the  ‫ﻀﺎﻑف‬ َ ‫ ُﻣ‬ and  its  respective  ‫ﻀﺎﻑف ﺇإِﻟَﻴﯿْﻪﮫ‬
َ ‫ ُﻣ‬ is  always  the  word  ‘of.’  Furthermore,  we  learned
that  the  word  after  ‘of,’  (more  precisely,  the  ‫ﻀﺎﻑف ﺇإِﻟَﻴﯿْﻪﮫ‬ َ ‫ ) ُﻣ‬ is  going  to  be  in  the  ‫ ﺟﺮ‬ status.  Thus,  the
rule  of  thumb  is  that  a  pronoun  attached  to  an  ‫ ﺍاﺳﻢ‬ will  be  in  the  ‫ ﺟﺮ‬ status.

To  further  understand  this  point,  consider  the  word  ُ‫ ِﻛﺘَﺎﺑُﻪﮫ‬.  This  is   ُ‫ ِﻛﺘَﺎﺏب‬ and  ُ‫ﻩه‬.  Notice  that   ُ‫ ِﻛﺘَﺎﺏب‬ is
both  light  and  has  no  ‫ﺍاﻝل‬.  Also,  notice  that  ُ‫ ﻩه‬ can  be  either  ‫ ﻧﺼﺐ‬ or  ‫ﺟﺮ‬.  But  because  we  know  a
pronoun  attached  to  another  ‫ ﺍاﺳﻢ‬ is  a  ‫ﻀﺎﻑف ﺇإِﻟَﻴﯿْﻪﮫ‬َ ‫ ُﻣ‬,  we  know  that  ُ‫ ﻩه‬ is  actually  in  the  ‫ ﺟﺮ‬ status.
Therefore,  ُ‫ ِﻛﺘَﺎﺑُﻪﮫ‬ means  ‘book  of  his,’  or  more  commonly  ‘his  book.’

Refer  to  the  chart  on  the  next  page  for  extra  practice.  Then  complete  the  practice  questions.
