Light vs. Heavy
Normally an اﺳﻢshould be heavy. All the words in the Muslim chart
are heavy.
An ism is made light by removing the extra ‘n’ sound. Do this by:
NOTE: الdoesn’t like tanween, but an ism with الisn’t considered light.

7
There are only FOUR reasons for an ism to be light. Write them
below as we learn them:
1) Partly Flexible Isms
2) Mudaaf ()ﻣﻀﺎف
8
Flexibility
1) Fully flexible
• Most isms are fully flexible.
• Can be heavy or light.
ْ ْ َ
• Can show all statuses (َرﻓﻊ, ﻧﺼﺐ, and )َﺟّﺮ
• Muslim chart on page 6
2) Non Flexible
• Only have one form.
• Looks the same in all statuses.
• Some words that are non-flexible:
َ ْ ُ َُْ
o Words ending in alif eg: nدﻏﻴﺎ ﻣﻮ
9
Partly Flexible: A Closer Look
10
Number
1) Normal masculine plural (Muslim chart)
2) Normal feminine plural (Muslim chart)
3) Human broken plural
4) Non-human broken plural
ٌ َ ٌ َ َ
5) Plural by meaning (Eg: people ﻧﺎس, generation ﻗْﺮن, nation )ﻗْﻮٌم
Broken Plurals
BPs don’t have plural endings like those in the Muslim chart. Broken
plurals have ending sounds. They can only be identified through
vocabulary, otherwise they look singular.
