Scope
A
BOOK that runs to its Fifth Edition is no experiment.
Books die when their usefulness has passed ; therefore so
long as the public demand new editions it is certain that a
book is doing reasonably well its work, and performing some real
service to the public.
The Columbia Book now appears in its Fifth Edition, and
though its work is only the humble one of spreading the pleasant
and gentle art of knitting, it has earned its long life by doing that
work well. People are still asking for both people who have yet
it,
to learn the many uses of yarns, and people who have used them
for years the one to begin the art, the other to better practise it.

On the Choice of a Yarn

hand work, and a fine yarn. A hand worker, with proper
THE materials, will give her work a delicacy, a fineness of finish,
a character that no machine-made work ever possesses. But she
must look to her yarns to do it. She must find a lofty, elastic, even
thread, soft and thin to the touch, made of a wool sensitive to the
slightest of shade and color. The Columbia Yarns

were used in making all the articles in this book, and they meet the
requirements. With them work in yarns becomes an art, and good
results are easier and surer.
Stamped by public opinion as the best among yarns recognized
as good, Columbia Yarns cost in the beginning a trifle more than
some others— otherwise they could not be what they are. In the
end they are the cheapest of all. For the cheapness of a yarn is
determined not alone by what you pay for a hank of but it,

KNITTING

TO CAST ON STITCHES
Make a loop in the yarn, and put it on
the left-hand needle. Slip the right-hand
needle into
the loop,
put the

needle, draw it through and slip that loop on the left-
hand needle. Put the right-hand needle then into the
2d loop, and repeat until you have the required num-
ber of stitches.
TO KNIT PLAIN
Having the number of stitches required on the left-hand needle, put the right-hand
needle into the ist slilch. Put the yarn over, and take it up on the right-hand needle.
Repeat until all the stitches are on the right-hand needle.
TO PURL
Bring the yarn in front of the right-hand
needle, which should take up the stitch on the
left-hand needle, entering at the right side of
the yarn in front. Throw the yarn around at the
back of the needle as it passes in the stitch, catch
it in, and take it off.
Be careful always to carry the yarn back of
the needle after a purled stitch before knitting a
plain stitch.

EXPLANATION OF THE TERMS USED IN THIS BOOK.
TO SLIP A STITCH
Take the stitch from the left-hand to the
right-hand needle without knitting it.
TO MAKE A STITCH
Bring the yarn in front of the needle (as in purling) and knit plain.
TO MAKE A STITCH WHEN PURLING
The yarn being already in front of the

needle, must also be passed around the needle.
TO NARROW
Knit 2 stitches together, as i.
TO MAKE A TWIST STITCH

Like plain knitting, except that the
needle must be put in the back of the stitch.

Then knit as usual.
TO SLIP AND BIND

Slip the stitch from the left-hand to the
right-hand needle without knitting. Knit
the next stitch, then pass the slipped stitch
over the knitted one.
Note: Sometimes the slipped stitch is passed over 2. and even over 3 stitches
knitted together, where it is necessary to decrease the number of stitches.
TO BIND OFF
Slip I stitch, knit the next stitch ; with
the left-hand needle draw the slipped stitch
over the knitted stitch. Continue, slipping the
1st stitch over the last knitted stitch until there
is but I left on the needle. Cut yarn and draw
through this last stitch.

Fancy Stitches in Crocheting

PICOT
Make a chain the length required. Work l D. C.*,
7 chain stitches, i Sg. C. in the 2d stitch of chain. Work I
chain stitch and make i D. C. in the 4th stitch of the chain*,
and repeat from * to *.
AFGHAN STITCH
Make a chain the length required, and take up each
stitch of the chain, throwing the yarn over the hook each
time before taking up a stitch. For 2d row, work back
in tricot style — drawing through first i loop; then throwing
the yarn over the hook and drawing through 2 loops at a
time.
HALF-STITCH, RIB
Make a chain the length required. Draw
a loop through a stitch of the chain, throw the
yarn over the hook and draw through both
loops on the hook at once.
Second Row : repeat same process but use
the stitch at the back of work to form the rib.
COFFEE BEAN STITCH

Make a chain the length required. Slip
2 chain, wrap the w'ool over the hook, draw
wool through and wrap again over the hook
and draw through all the stitches on the hook at
the same time. Continue to the end of the row.
PUFF STITCH
Make a chain the length required.
First Row : Make 3 D. C. in the 5th stitch
from hook, 2 Ch. and i Sg. C. in the ne.xt
stitch, slip 3 stitches, making a puff in the
next stitch. Repeat to end.
Second Row : Alake i Sg. C. in the top of
the stitch just before the Ch., and 2 D. C.
over the 2 Ch., and repeat across row.

Turn the work, make a * chain of 3, make 3 D. C. in the last Sg. C. made in the ist
row ; fasten this shell by a Sg. C. in the loop formed by the chain of 3 in the preceding
row. Repeat from * to end of row.
Turn and repeat for all the work.
STAR STITCH
Draw a loop up through each of 5 successive

stitches; throw the wool over and draw it through all
the stitches on the hook, closing the cluster with a
slip stitch. Draw a loop up through the eye formed
by the slip stitch, draw a loop up through the back
part of the last upright stitch of the star just made,
draw a loop up through each of the next 3 stitches —
this will leave 6 loops on the hook — draw wool through these and close as in the pre-
ceding stars. Repeat to end of chain and break off the wool.
Second Row: Draw the wool through the outer edge of the ist star made and
make a chain of 3, throw the yarn over the hook and bring up a loop through the
last stitch of chain just made. (The yarn is thrown over the hook only for the ist
stitch at the beginning of each row.) Take up 3 stitches, drawing up the last loop
through the ist stitch beyond the first eye.
Repeat until the work is the length required.

SEA SHELL OR DOUBLE SHELL

STITCH
First Row : In the 4th stitch of the chain
make 9 D C, drawing the wool through loosely.
Skip 3 stitches and take up the 4th with a Sg.
C to form the shell; skip again 3 stitches and
make g D C in the 4th stitch from the last

Sg. C; fasten this shell the same as the
1st one, and in the next 4th stitch continue-

thus the entire length of chain.
Second Row: Fasten the wool in the ist stitch of the shell first made. Throw
the wool over the hook, put the hook through the stitch where wool is fastened, and
draw a loop through loosely; throw yarn over and draw loop through again sim-
ilarly. So as to leave i loop on hook, throw the wool over before you take up the
2d stitch, then after taking up the 2d stitch, throw the wool over again and
draw through 2. Take up the following stitches in the same way, until there are
5 loops on the hook. Throw the wool over and draw a loop through all 5 of the
loops on hook at once ; close the loop with a slip stitch, thus forming an eye. Make
a chain of 3 stitches and fasten it to the middle of the ist shell in the ist row by
a Sg. C; throw the wool over and make 10 stitches like the group of 5 just com-
pleted, closing the group in the same way. Make a chain of 3 and fasten it by a
Sg. C in the middle of the 2d shell of the ist row; put the wool over and take
up the stitch next to the Sg. C, throw the wool over and through 2; repeat until
10 stitches are again on hook. Close the group as before, and continue in the same
way across the row, ending with a cluster of 5 to keep the edge even.
Third Row: Fasten wool in the eye of the ist half-group of stitches in the 2d
row. JNIake 3 chain and 4 D C in this same eye and fasten the last one by a Sg. C
to the 1st Sg. C. in the 2d row. Make 9 D. C. in the next eye of the 2d row,

centres of tlie shells together in i eye), and repeat to end of row, making 5 D C in the

Fourth Row — Fasten wool in the top of the chain of 3 at the beginning of the
3d row; then, following the directions given for 2d row, take up the stitches of the shell
in groups of 10. Finish with a chain of 3 fastened at the edge.
Fifth Row — Fasten the }arn in the centre corner of the scallop beginning the row,
make 9 D C in the ist eye of the 4th row, and fasten the last one in the Sg. C of the
same row. Repeat across the row.
Repeat in the following order.
Sixth Row — Same as 2nd.
Seventh— Same as 3rd. and so on, taking care always to have side edges even.

DIRECTIONS FOR WASHING KNIT GARMENTS

TO AVOID SHRINKING
1. .Make warm Soap Suds (not much soap). Proper heat for the suds is just
uncomfortably hot for the hands, but so as not to scald.
2. The washing and rinsing should all be done in warm — not hot — water.
3. L'se pure soap only ; no chemicals or washing powders.
4. Do not rub soap on the garment. Put the garment through the wringer and
back in the suds 3 or 4 times. Rinse out in clear water, rvry llioroiigltly.
5. Wash carefully, rubbing as little as possible, and iici'cr on a ^casliboard.

6. Let the Suds and IFriiigcr do the tivr/,-.
7. Stretch the garments lengthwise and dry quickly in the oi)en air.

Make same 40 stitche.s long and 27 rows wide.
Make a chain of 75 stitches.
First Row — I plain crochet stitch in chain, then take up next stitch on chain.
Keep I stitch on needle and crochet 3 chain stitches, the 4th stitch taken through
both stitches. (This forms the raised stitch or popcorn.) After the popcorn stitch,
make a Sg. C, then a popcorn, and continue in like manner to the end of chain, making
^7 popcorns in the length of Afghan.
Second Row. — Commence with 2 Sg. C stitches, take needle through both stitches
so that the popcorn will come in between those of the ist row, and continue in a like
manner as in the ist row, putting i Sg. C between each popcorn through the whole
Afghan.
You must make popcorn come in between those of the row you have just finished.
Finish the Afghan with 2 rows of star stitch around the entire article, and a row
of popcorn stitch between them, and edge with chain of Pink and White. Take up stitch
in centre of star and crochet 5 stitches with White, then take up centre of next star
and crochet 5 stitches of Pink, (this makes it necessary to have both colors going at the
same time). In taking up the centre of the 3d star, cross the White over the Pink,
and continue in like manner all around the Afghan.

The hook used in making this stitch must be quite large. Two colors are usually
employed — we used Pink and White for the sample for illustration.
First Row — Make a long chain of White wool ; in the 4th stitch from the
hook make 8 treble crochets * skip 3 chain, make i Sg. C in the next stitch ; skip 3
chain, make 8 trebles in the 4th stitch and repeat from* until the Afghan is wide enough.
Turn.
Second Row — ^lake 8 trebles in the same stitch as the last 8; also make a
Sg. C in the corresponding one underneath. Repeat to the end of the row and break
off the wool. Turn the work and fasten on the Pink wool in the top of the ist wheel.
Third Row — Make chains of 7 stitches between the White wheels, fastening the
chains with a Sg. C between the 4th and 5th trebles in each wheel.
Turn.
Fourth Row — In the 4th chain-stitch of the chain last made, make 4 trebles
and fasten the last one in the Sg. C between the White wheels ; make 4 more trebles in
the same chain-stitch, and fasten in the Sg. C at the top of White wheel. Proceed_
in
this manner across the work. There will be i wheel less at each end in every Pink
row than the number in the White row, which will produce the effect of a lining.
Turn.
Fifth Row — ^Nlake 8 trebles in every 4th or same chain-stitch used before;
I Sg. C in every Sg. C, the same as in the 2d row. Break off the wool at the end of the
row, and join the White again at this point.
Sixth Row — Holding the Pink toward you make 9 chain, fastening with Sg. C
between the 4th and 5th trebles of the ist Pink wheel; 7 chain between the other wheels,
fastening with a Sg. C in the top of the wheels, and make chain at the end so as to
have the same number of White wheels as in the ist row of them.
Turn.
Seventh Row — Make 4 trebles in the 5th chain-stitch, and fasten the last one
in the top of the ist White wheel. 4 trebles in the same chain-stitch and fasten at top
of Pink wheel, carefully keeping the White yarn on one side of the work and the Pink
on the other. Repeat across the row ; make the Afghan about a yard long.
Finish with a border or with fringe or tassels. Any colors preferred may be
combined; but Pink and White, or Blue and White are the colors usually selected.

INSTRUCTIONS
Wind the wool both blue and wliite into equal parts, as the two balls of the same
color are used at the same time.
Begin with lOO chains, take up each stitch as in Afghan stitch, retaining the
stitches on the needle. Turn the work (fasten the other ball of wool to the other end
of the work) and take the stitches off the needle with the other hook. With the same
hook take the stitches up again, then turn the work, taking them off with the other
hook. Two rows like this form a ridge. Then make
2 ridges of white 2 ridges of white

alternating them until you have 15 ridges of white and 14 ridges of blue, finish with a
large shell of blue, 7 stitches in shell, put 3 single stitches between each shell and edge

Work every round on the same principle as you have worked the 3d, getting an extra
hole between increases in each succeeding round. Thus, in the 4th round, there will
be 4 holes between increases, in the 5th, 5 holes betweeen increases, and so on. When
15 or 21 rounds are done, according to the depth desired, begin the border.
Note — The idea is that the centre of the shawl forms a sort of a yoke to come nicely to the
edge of the shoulders, and with this end in view it is often worked a little closer than the lighter
border, even if the same needle is used throughout. Taste will dictate style, and both centre and
border can be made of any depth wished, as will be seen from the instructions.
BORDER.— First Round — Make 2 double crochet under chain in every space.
Second Round — 3 chain, i treble, i chain, 2 treble, all under top loops of ist
stitch* miss i stitch, then 2 treble, i chain, 2 treble, all under the loops of next stitch,
repeat from* to end of round; join last shell to first.
Third Round — Slip stitch under the top loop of the next treble into the hole in

stitch to middle of ist shell. Repeat the 4th round continuously, watching the work
as you go on, to see that it does not draw in at all. If at any time, it seems to
need widening, e'ther use a larger hook and work more loosely, or lay the work on the
table, and mark 8 soaces in the round as nearly as possible above the increases in the
centre portion, and at each of these spaces when working the next round, put an in-
crease by working 2 treble, i chain. 2 treble, i chain. 2 treble, all into the i shell.
This gives spaces for 2 shells in next round. When the shawl is deep enough, which
it probably will be in from 12 to 18 rounds, the final round is a scallop. It can be
widened oftener than the 8 spaces if needed. See note.
Scallop Round. — *Double crochet between the shell just worked and the next, g
treble in middle of next shell, and repeat from* all around.
XoTE — If 9 treble are not enough, or you wish any more fanciful scallop, it is easy to alter the
one given. The main thing is to keep the work pretty. It must be well rounded and not drawn in
the least at the edge, and is better a little full than otherwise. Increasings can be made without
counting so long as proper effect is obtained, as often as required. Many workers prefer to do all
shaping by changing to larger hooks as the work progresses. But care will enable any one to get a
good result.

Turn Ch. 4, make shell in ist stitch of ist shell, fasten with Sg. C in centre of
ist shell, make shell of 6 D C in space between 2 shells, fasten with Sg. C in centre
of next shell, make shdl of 6 D C in last stitch of last shell.
Turn, Ch. 4, and repeat shells till 7 rows are completed; the last row having 7
shells.
At end of 7th row make chain of 81 stitches, make 2 D C in each of the 4th,

every ridge. Knit plain for 20 ridges, knit plain for 9 ridges, decreasing i stitch at
each side of needle every ritlge. This leaves 20 stitches remaining on needle and
finishes the crown. Now take a crochet needle and pick up stitches on the right side
of the crown. Knit the 20 stitches off the needle and pick up 47 stitches on the left
side of the crown, making 114 stitches on the needle. Knit plain for 30 ridges. On the
next or 31st ridge, knit 39 stitches on to a spare needle, take up another needle and knit
36 stitches. This leaves 39 stitches remaining on another spare needle. Now knit the
36 stitches plain for 10 ridges, knitting i stitch off the spare needle at each side every
ridge. This makes 56 stitches on needle. Knit plain across also stitches on spare

LINING. — Make a chain of 30 stitches
and turn.
First Row — Skip 6 stitches in the chain,

Continue by making 7 more rows Hke

Begin at the side at the top of 2d row,
make a chain stitch, and i long D C in
the seam stitch, then 3 over the side of every
D C until the 8th row is reached, then 5
in the corner in every D C underneath, then
5 in the opposite corner ; then work down the
other side to the top of the 2d row of D C.
Begin at the bottom of the lining and /■
work 4 rows back and forth to form front -
and sides. This completes the lining.
OLITSIDE. — Begin at the bottom and make a chain about 14 inches in length.
To get the puff effect make the puffs thus :
3 D C in the 5th stitch (or the 6th stitch counting the one on the hook), 2
chain, i S C in the next stitch, skip 3 stitches, making a puff in the next stitch, and
repeat until there are 20 puffs.
Next row make i Sg. C in the top of the stitch just before the chain, 2 D C over
the 2 chain, and repeat across the row.
In the next row make the puffs in the single crochet.
Make 2 more rows, then in the 3d row of puffs (after making 6 puffs) widen
by making an extra puff just after the one in the Sg. C. ^lake 8 puffs, then widen as
before.
In the 5th row of puffs widen in the same way, then work plain puffs and inter-
mediate rows until there are 12 rows of puffs, and end with the plain rows, then break
the wool. Skip 9 puffs from the edge, holding the right side towards you, and make 6
puffs, which will leave 9 at the other side; work back and forth on the 6 puffs until
you have 11 rows of puffs.
Crochet each edge of the central portion to the adjoining edge of side portion,
thus forming top of Hood.
CAPE. — Begin at the bottom of Hood and make 20 puffs across. In the next row
of puffs widen in the centre and at the end ; next row widen at the beginning and end,
next row widen in the centre only, and in the last row make plain puffs without widen-
ing. Always widen in the puff rows, and be sure to make all the puffs on the same side.
To finish off the front of Hood make small scallops, 2 chain, 3 D C rather loose,
and further down add a Sg. C (far enough from the starting point of scallop). This
will cause the scallops to lay flat.
To finish the cape make the scallops 2 D C, 3 chain, i slip stitch in the top of the
last D C to form a purl, 2 D C, i purl, 2 D C, i purl, i D C. all in the same place, catch
down with i Sg. C so the scallop will lay flat, and work around the collar, making the
scallops flat at the corners as well as along the sides and lower edge.
Fasten a ribbon bow at the centre of the back where the collar joins the Hood,
and ribbon at the front for tying string.
Finish by making at the top a band of loop trimming, made thus: 7 chain, use
the wool double, skip 2 stitches of chain, put hook through the next one, wind the
wool over the fingers 3 times and draw through the stitch, repeat same in the next 4
stitches, work back in Afghan style, the whole drawn through the loop and the loop
made by 3 wind overs and repeat to the end of row. Continue to work back and forth
as above until you have 5 clusters of loops in each row, and until you have 17 rows.
Sew the Hood and finish with a ribbon bow at the top of the left side.

Second Row — Fancy tricot, widen i at beginning and i on either side of the
nth fancy tricot to form the shoulder, also widen i on either side of middle back.
Third Row — Omit the widening at beginning, but do i widening immediately

LINING. — Begin with a chain of 36 stitches and turn.

Next begin at the side. At the top of 2d row, make 5 chain, i D C in the
1st stitch, then 3 over the side of every D C until the 9th row is reached. Then 5

Next begin at the bottom of the lining and work 4 rows back and forth.
FRONT AND SIDES FOR THE OUTSIDE.— Begin at the bottom of back,

3d rows plain.
Fourth Row — Start at centre of hood, make 2 shell, i shell on the top of 2 shells ;
this is done to shape the hood.
Fifth Row — Begin at the end of work and continue until you have worked all
across. Repeat 3 more rows in the same maimer, then make 2 chain stitches, skip 2,
then I Sg. C. Continue all across the front 2 rows, then begin the cape.
CAPE. — Sew in the lining of the cap, then stitch through the lining with the

knitted knit from the front towards the under arm seam, until within 30 stitches of the

6oth row — Knit and purl back according to pattern. This makes the back 5 full
cable twists in length.

vening stitches for the neck. Now slip one of these shoulder pieces on a spare needle,
and knit the other according to the following directions. When completed go back and
knit the other side.
Knit iK cables in length, then cast on for the neck. In front
the shoulder pieces
56 stitches. Complete half cable twist and knit 4 more cable twists in length. When
the last cable is completed cast 19 stitches on the end for the width under the arm. Knit
5 more cables in length.
Knit the pattern from the front toward the under arm seam until within 28 stitches
of edge. Turn and knit pattern back, leaving these 28 stitches on the needle. Turn and
knit towards the under arm seam until within 32 stitches, turn and knit the pattern back.
Repeat this leaving each time 4 more stitches on the under arm needle, until there are
only 28 stitches left to knit forward towards the front.
The garment is now ready for the band.
Begin with steel needles and make a rib of 2 and 2 for 28 stitches.
Rib 2 together 14 times, rib 3 together 10 times, rib 4 together 3 times. Rib the
band until it is ij/' inches deep.
SLEEVE. — Pick up 90 stitches on bone needle, knit 6 cables in length. Narrow
I stitch each end of needle as was done in the back, every 5th row. counting forward
and back as 2 rows. Continue narrowing in this way until there are 64 stitches on the
needle, making cable at the regular intervals. Continue knitting the sleeve without

STRAPS — Make 6 straps, 13 stitches wide, knitted to match the 18 stitches, make

Make one side after the following rule, and the other to correspond. Knit the
shoulders to a deptli of half an inch or 5 rows, increase one stitch every row at the
neck for 8 rows, and then cast on toward the front 24 stitches. Knit to a depth of 4Y2
inches from the point of last casting on. Increase one stitch every nnv at the armholc,
until 10 stitches arc added, then cast on 16 stitches for underarm size. Knit 6K' inches
from this point. This brings the sweater to the point where the long front is made.
From the front knit to within 20 stitches of the underarm seam, turn, knit back, turn,
knit to within 24 stitches of the underarm scam, turn, knit !)ack. Continue, leaving
each time 4 more stitches on the underarm needle, until there arc 14 stitches left at the
front. Knit back, slip all these stitches on a steel needle. From the frotit knit 3, then
knit 5 together, 5 times, knit 3 together 8 times, knit the last 14 stitches on needle.
Pick up 62 stitches across the back. Now take the stitches from the two fronts
and the back, on i or 2 needles. Knit the pattern for iK' inches, bind off loosely

Using the same direction for 32-inch bust, knit 12 stitches more in the back, and

The same directions will answer for 34-inch bust, knit 8 stitches more each side
and 16 more in the back, and for 2,2 and 34-inch bust must be 14 inches in the back, and

Cast on for border at bottom 26 stitches. Knit i plain, * wrap, slip i, knit 2
together, repeat from * always knitting first and last stitch plain. Do this until j'ou
have 100 rows knitted (one needle being a row). Be sure to slip the stitch that was
knitted together in previous row, and the wrap and i to be knitted together so as to have
the same number of stitches every row. The 100 rows make the half of the width of
the sweater, bind ofif easily.
With bone needles pick up on one side of border sufficient number of stitches
knitting twice into same stitches, for half of sweater which should be 124 for 36 inches
or 136 for 38 inches, increasing 12 stitches for every size larger, and decreasing 12
stitches for every size smaller, the sizes being designated by even numbers.
Now knit ribbed, 2 purl, 2 plain, until you have 130 needles knitted or more if you
desire it longer under the arms, this is up to the armhole mark for armhole. then rib
continuously until you have 60 more needles for armhole. The entire length of sweater
with border should measure 32 inches before beginning the shoulder.

for 40 rows, knit i stitch plain at the beginning and end of row, knitting 2 together at
each end every seventh row until you have narrowed 5 times, losing 10 stitches, then
continue the ribbing until the sleeve measures 17 or 19 inches from shoulder and 112
stitches wide. Take steel needles, knit i row plain, and 6 rows of shoulder pattern, knit
I row plain, narrow off 8 stitches in different parts of the row until you have 104 left.
Finish with cuffs ribbed i plain, i purl, alternately, 6 inches in length, close
sweater from armhole to bottom, close sleeves and place seam of sleeves in the hollow

sleeve is 115 rows long. Now take steel needles and knit 2, purl 2 for 24 rows. Bind
off and sew up sleeve and under arm seams.
COLLAR. — Cast on 88 stitches, on i steel needle, knit 2, purl 2, making rib of 2

and 2 for ^2 rows. Bind off, sew the ends together and sew to the neck of sweater,
(the collar seam should come a little back of the one shoulder).
In making a larger or smaller sweater, add or decrease 5 stitches for every inch

Fourth Row — Same as 2d row. *Work to the 2d stitch after the corner of the
neck, 3 chain, miss 3 D C, 10 D C* Repeat from * to * 6 times, then D C as before.
3 more rows of D C and fasten off.
POCKET. — Work a D C on the chain, cast on above the pocket-hole, and into
the loop on each side ; 4 rows of D C on this and fasten oflf. With 6 strands of the
Filoselle, embroider the fronts. Bring up the rug needle in the bottom of the 3d loop
in the 4th little row ; put the needle in at the top of the loop to the right, bring it out
at the top of the loop to the left, then insert it again where you first brought it up. Work
in this way on every 5th stitch ; pass 2 rows, work another row on the 3d row just be-
tween the 2 last little leaves, and so on over the whole.
The fronts should be made up by a tailor to fit the person for whom the vest is
intended. This we advise the more strongly as the work in making them up is very
considerable.

Having drawn the shape of the vest on the canvas, work willi wool as follows :
Beginning at the right hand corner, work a long, upright stitch covering six threads of
the canvas. In succession v/ork four more similar stitches, each stitch being begun one
thread higher from the bottom, and extending one thread higher at the top. After this
5th stitch reverse the next four stitches, by beginning each of them one thread lower on
the canvas, each stitch covering six threads as before. From this point it will always
be found that the fourth stitch makes the point of the Vandyke upwards and downwards.
Each row of wool Vandykes is separated by a narrow vandykc in Filoselle, for
which you leave two threads of canvas between the wool Vandykes. Work the Filoselle
in these spaces after the wool is completed, as it looks fresher and brighter if put in
last.

This well known stitch is one of the best for men's vest, and the snnplest method
is to work a straight piece of tricot of the required length and width. This should be
afterwards cut and shaped by a tailor, who makes the proi'cr incisions for the pockets.

good average number). Proceed to work in tricot two pieces the required size. When
these are finished work in Filoselle, with enil)roidery needle, a twisted stitch over the

Knit in ribbing 5 stitches plain and 3 stitches purl for 50 rounds. Mark with a
thread of cotton the 3 purled stitches, which stand 14th, 15th and i6th in the centre
of the 1st needle. These are to be considered as seam stitches, and are to be kept
straight in line to the heel of the stocking.
In the Sist round when 2 stitches before the seam stitch, pick up a thread and
knit it to make an extra stitch on the needle, knit 2, purl 3 seam stitches, knit 2, increase
another stitch and finish the round as heretofore. Knit the ne.xt 7 rounds in ribbing
as before, only now there will be an extra stitch in the plain ribs on each side of the
seam, repeat from * until there are 4 stitches increased each side, 112 stitches in the
round. Knit on in ribbing until the stocking measures 10 or 11 inches from the
commencement.
To decrease the leg,* — knit in ribbing till within 3 stitches of the scam stitches,

corner pick up on i needle 27 stitches thence to centre of the heel, knitting each
stitch as you pick it up. On a 2d needle pick up and knit 28 stitches from the centre
of the heel to the left-hand corner of the heel; then rib on a 3d needle the 43 instep
stitches.
GUSSETS. — First knit i round plain on foot and ribbed instep. Then * on
1st foot needle knit i, slip l, knit i, pass the slipped stitch over, knit plain to within
3 stitches (Ji the end of the 2d foot needle, knit 2 together, knit i ; rib along the instep

the row there will be 41 stitches. In widening see that no openings will result.
Two methods may be used. The first is as follows :—
Put the needle through a stitch in the ordinary manner, throw the thread around
it twice, and then knit the stitch ofif in the regular way, but keep the 2 "thrown-over"
threads on the needle to make the 2 new stitches required. In knitting the 2 new
stitches knit the ist in the regular way, and the 2d through the back.
The other method is to knit through the front stitch in the usual way, but do not
slip it off the needle.

Now knit through the back of the same stitch and slip it off. The plain knitting
first made comes under the sole of the foot.
To make the upper part of foot after the 6 rows plain are made : Begin the
/th as follows : Knit 2, purl 2, knit 2. purl 2, and repeat across the row until there are
22 blocks, widening by 2 stitches at the front edge or toe of the sock, turn.

To make the instep and toe pass 36 stitches, begin at the back on another needle,

Regulate the widening — the basket effect of blocks will not be disturbed. This forms
one-half the foot. Knit the other half of the toe and instep 8 rows more to correspond

For the top cast on 79 stitches, purl once across and knit back plain.
Third Row — Purl 2 separately, then purl 3 together, purl 3, purl 3 together, and
repeat across the row until within 2 stitches of the end, then purl 2 stitches separately.
Fourth Row — Knit i, throw over, knit 3. throw over, knit i, throw over, knit 3,
and repeat across the row.
Repeat 3d and 4th rows until the top is 21 holes deep, and make last row like
the 4th.
Now across 4 ribs at each side, knit plain, and between the plain sections work
the same as 3d row to show the ribs. Knit plain again at each side, working between
the same as in the 4th row.
Fifth Row — Purl 2, throw over twice, purl 2 together, and repeat to end of the
plain section. Make open-work between.

Sixth Row — Knit plain at sides, dropping every 2d put-over thread. Make
open-work between next 2 ribs, knit plain, also knit plain across the next row of
open-work and the next rib at each side. This will leave 4 rows of open-work and ribs
at the centre of the needle.
Now bind off 30 stitches, then knit across in open-work style until there are 30
stitches left on the needle. Join the yarn and knit the remainder of the instep in open-
work, so that there will be 32 holes from the top of the sock to the lower edge of the
instep. Bind off.

Twelfth Row — Plain (make a ridge of 2 rows of knitting) and repeat until you
have 4 ridges. Knit 17 stitches (slip on another needle), knit 17 stitches more — this
will form the knee — turn and knit back. Add i stitch at the end of each needle until
your 51 stitches are complete, 17 ridges on the knee, knit plain 17 ridges on the leg part.
To make the fancy portion knit 3, purl 7 and repeat across the needle. In work-
ing back purl 7 and knit 3 across the needle. Work in this way until there are 3 ridges,
and then reverse the design. Repeat until you have 12 blocks (as seen in the picture),
narrowing i at the end of needle (there should be 38 stitches at the end of fancy por-
tion).
For the instep knit 25 stitches and slip the other 13 on another needle, knit back
12 stitches (of the 25) and leave the remaining 13 on the ist needle. Knit the 12
stitches back and forth until there are g ridges, knit 2 more ridges, narrowing every
end one.
Now with the needle left at the right side of the work, pick up stitches along edge
of the instep and knit across the toe. Repeat same on the left side of the work, knit
back and forth until there are 3 ridges below the instep portion.
Bind off and sew up each leg seam.

In working back work in the regular order, except that you drop one throw-over thread

every time across. There should be 50 stitches on the needle. To make the fancy por-
tion knit 2, purl 2, and repeat until you have 19 rows. To make the braid and re-
mainder of section :

work. Now knit 3 stitches with the ist (or right-hand needle). Place the extra
needle with its 3 stitches back of the ist needle, then knit 3 more with the ist needle,
and with the same needle knit ofif the 3 stitches on the extra needle to form the
twist of the braid. *Now purl 3, knit 12, purl 3 and repeat from * to * between the
twists. Purl 3, knit 4.
Eighth Row — Knit 3, purl i, knit 3, purl 9, knit 3, purl i, knit 10, purl i, knit 3,
purl 9, knit 3, purl i, knit 3. Repeat from the ist row until there are 20 ridges at the
middle portion of the front.
For the instep knit 31 stitches slip the remaining 19 on to another needle, knit
back 12 stitches on the 31 and leave the remaining 19 on the ist needle. Knit the 12
stitches now on the centre needle, back and forth until there are 10 ridges. Knit 3 more
ridges, narrowing 2, making 10 stitches across the toe. Now with the needles left at the
right side of the work, pick up the stitches at the adjoining side of the instep portion
and knit across with the needle at the other side of the work pick up 15
the toe, then
stitches along the adjoining side of the instep portion and knit them off. Knit back and
forth until there are 6 ridges below the instep portion, and bind off. Knit a strip 5
stitches wide and 15 ridges long, and sew it to the lower edge of the foot portion.
Now sew up each leg seam and join the 2 sections by the middle scam.
Crochet scallops around the top as follows : Make 4 chain stitches, 2 D C drawn
up long and caught down flatly by a Sg. C. Repeat around, run a cord through the
holes made for it and tip off the end with tassel. Ribbon or elastic can be used in place
of the cord if desired.

Finish the edge at the top and bottom with Sg. C, then crochet a small
tab at the centre of the front part of band, on the bottom. This is used to pin the
band down.
Make the small tab as follows : 11 Sg. C for the width and 5 rows of same for the
depth.

Cast 114 stitches on 4 needles, and work with the 5th needle as follows: Knit in
rib style for 47 rounds, by purling 2 and knitting 2.
In the 48th round begin the gore, which covers the knee. Knit off the ist 26
stitches, and knit them separately back and forth, purling 2 and knitting 2.
After knitting 2 rows in this manner, change the pattern by knitting the stitches
that were purled and purling the ones that were knit, thus forming a small square.
In knitting this gore, one stitch is taken from the needle at each side of the 26
stitches each time across after the ist row. This widens the gore, then it is knit as
described above.
Continue taking stitch from the needles until there are only 42 left of the original
ribbed portion. This brings the gore to the points at the side and completes the upper
half of the knee cap.
Now work the lower half of the gore separately, narrowing i at the end of each
row until only 26 stitches are left. Now take up 23 stitches at each side of these 26
stitches along the selvedge of the gore. This will bring you to the side of the gore.
Then divide the stitches as evenly as possible on the 4 needles and work in
rib style the same as top, 47 rounds, being careful to continue the ribs of the upper
portion.
Finish the knee cap with a border of plain crochet.

Make 5 chains and close them with a single stitch.

Crochet 10 single stitches into the ring just made, then crochet around those 10
stitches, picking up the lower half of each stitch (always working on the wrong side of
the stitch), until you have the lines 23^ yards long, or whatever length desired.
Finish
each end with a large tassel. The strap with the bells is made with 8
chains, up each chain with a Sg. C, then crochet back and forth on the Sg. C,
take
always picking up the back stitch (which forms a rib), until you have the strap 10
inches long. Sew each end of the strap around the lines and trim with bells.
Note. — To make a firmer rein run a cotton rope through the reins when finished.

Skip 3 stitches and take up the 4th with a Sg.

C to form the shell; skip again 3 stitches and

make g D C in the 4th stitch from the last

1st one, and in the next 4th stitch continue-
