Create a Bed
Open SketchUp and save as new file Hands-on_Fit for a Master.skp.
We are going to create a bed similar to the style of the couch that your client approved.
First, start by drawing a rectangle the size of a matrimonial bed - 1.80 x 2.10 meters.
Then offset 0.10 m from each of the two shorter sides of the rectangle to serve as the
base of the headboard and the footboard of the bed. Group the three rectangles
individually.
Use the Soap Skin Bubble Plug-in at the corner with the following parameters:
Divisions: 20
Pressure: +800 if white face is showing
-800 if gray face is showing
Soften the edges to hide unnecessary lines. Make sure to check Soften Coplanar in the
Soften Edges dialog box. Lastly, reverse the face IF the gray part is facing outward.
Turn the corner group into a component, and copy it to the three (3) other corners. Rotate
the component using the Move Tool or Rotate Tool to match the location of the button.
Do the same for the squares along the edges and those at the center. Remember to turn
these two other types into components also.
6. Create the buttons
Double click one of the circles, and make it into a component. Go inside the component and
extrude it5mm outward. Offset an inner circle at 2mm. Select the inner circle, and move
it 3mm outward using the Move Tool and directional buttons to lock to the appropriate
axis.
The end result is a tapering button. Soften edges, and copy at the appropriate positions.
7. Tuft the sides
Go inside the headboard group, and draw a rectangle of size 0.10 x 0.15 m at the top of the
headboard. Make it into a component. Use the Soap Skin Bubble Plug-in on this object
with the following parameters:
Divisions: 15
Pressure: 600 outward
Copy the finished component all around the headboard’s sides, including the bottom.
Do the same on the box spring’s rectangles with the following parameters:
Divisions: 20
Pressure: 600 outward
8. Do the footboard
Either repeat the same process for the footboard, or scale the components of the
headboard to fit the squares of the footboard.
Use the same parameters.
For the front face of the footboard:
Divisions: 20 Pressure: 800 outward
For the top, sides, and bottom of the footboard:
Divisions: 15 Pressure: 600 outward
12. Make Pillows
Draw a rectangle the size of a queen pillow, approximately 0.5 x 0.75m, and make into a
group. Use this as a guide to draw arcs with a bulge of 0.03m at the lengths and arcs with
a bulge of 0.01m at the shorter sides. Erase the straight lines after.
Use the shape to make pillow with the Soap Skin Bubble Plug-in using the following
parameters:
Divisions: 30
Pressure: 500 outward
Mirror the object to itself to form a pillow, and make it into a component. Color the
component 0135_DarkGray.
Copy the component and scale to 0.85. Color this medium pillow 0129_WhiteSmoke.
Scale the medium pillow again to 0.50, and color this 0046_Gold or any other color you
would like to use as accent color for the other furniture and the bedroom.
Make two (2) copies of each type of pillow, and arrange them on the bed. Rotate and tilt
some of them a bit to avoid a very stiff look.
