Treatment of Photoaged Skin

This section focuses on a targeted group of topical skin care products used for treatment and prevention of
photoaging, referred to as the Topical Product Regimen for Photoaged Skin (see below). These rejuvenation
products, consisting primarily of cosmeceuticals, can be readily combined with superficial chemical peels and/or
microdermabrasion treatments to accelerate and enhance results. Products used for treatment address several
aspects of the aging process, including stimulation of skin exfoliation and epidermal renewal, increase synthesis of
collagen and other dermal matrix components, evening skin coloration (i.e., skin tone), and improving hydration.
Products used for prevention of photoaging protect against damage from free radicals and ultraviolet radiation.
These goals can be accomplished using rejuvenation products in three simple steps: cleanse, treat, and protect.
General guidelines for the use of topical products are reviewed below and providers are advised to follow
manufacturer instructions for each specific product.
