Lung Ultrasound for the Diagnosis of Pneumonia in Children with Acute Bronchitis

Bronchiolitis is a viral lower respiratory tract infection that affects children younger than
24 months. This disease is the leading cause of hospitalization of this age group. The diagnosis is
clinical and usually preceded by exposure to contacts with minor respiratory illness. The risk
factors are exposure to second-hand smoke, infants who were not breastfed and living in
crowded conditions. Although Chest Xray radiation have some effects on children, but if this
diagnostic imaging is not done, patient may be given unnecessary antibiotic prescription.

After listening to PGI Baes presentation about the diagnostic critical appraisal entitled,
“Lung ultrasound for the diagnosis of Pneumonia In children with Acute Bronchitis”, I realized
that this diagnostic imaging is more applicable compared with chest xray in diagnosing
bronchiolitis in children. As a medical intern, I will be able to request the appropriate diagnostic
tool to my patients and will be able to explain why lung ultrasound is better than chest xray.
