REFLECTION PAPER
Topic: Community Action Plan of Junior Interns
JI Baes, Anne Pauline

After hearing the presentation of JI Baes, I realized that it is definitely not easy to make an action plan
because formulating the appropriate and focused objectives for the community will take time and effort.
In this presentation, I learned that a well-organized objective following the SMART format, specific,
measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound will aid the researchers to produce a focus action plan for
their chosen respondents.
As a post graduate medical intern, I will spend my time to learning more about research because it will
assist me in practicing medicine.

Topic: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Zinc Supplementation as Adjuvant Therapy for Dengue Viral Infection
in Thai Children
JI Fuentes, Rosianne Jewel

Dengue fever is the world's fastest spreading mosquito-borne viral disease. Its prevalence has
increased 30 times in the last 50 years, and approximately 50 million people are infected with dengue virus
each year.
In this presentation, I learned that zinc supplementation can significantly shorten the hospital stay of
patients with dengue fever or dengue hemorrhagic fever. Zinc is an essential micronutrient for normal
development and function of cells mediating nonspecific immunity such as neutrophils and natural killer cells,
and it plays a role even in the acquired immunity.
After hearing the presentation, I realized the importance of research in treating, improving the quality
of life, and survival of our patients.
As a post graduate intern, with this presentation, I will be able to advise my patients of the importance
of zinc supplementation on the management of dengue fever.

Topic: Community Action Plan of Interns

PGI Espiritu, Christine

One of the most difficult obstacle a researcher often face in formulating an action plan was the general
objective of the study.
After hearing the presentation of PGI Espiritu, I realized that as a health care practitioner, community
action planning is a skill that should be practice repeatedly in order to produce a good output that will benefit

not just us physicians, but most especially the community. I also realized that in order to create a better
action plan we should review the basics of making a research objective.

Topic: Catharsis, Education and Action

Dr. Ronaldo Lapitan

After hearing the lecture, I learned that CEA method of health education is a holistic, biopsychosocial
method that educates both the patient and the family. When providing a CEA to a patient, the physician
should ensure that the emotionally misperceptions are open and properly addressed. Physicians should
explain or educate the family about the disease in simple and understandable terms, correcting any
misconceptions. The family should consult with the doctor about how the issues should be addressed.
I realized that an effective communication will have a better impact to the management of patient and
the family in order to solve their issues. I also realized that being a physician, we should treat our patient as if
they were a part of our family but then not to be emotionally involved that will cloud our judgment that may
cause harm to them and to yourself.
As a post graduate medical intern, I will practice my active listening skills to my patients so that I will be
able to manage them better.
