REFLECTION PAPER

Topic: The Effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Depression, Anxiety and Stress in Patients with COVID-19:
A Randomized Controlled Trial
Presentor: PGI Ibarra, Christine Anne F.

After hearing the presentation entitled, “The Effect of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy on Depression,
Anxiety and Stress in Patients with COVID-19: A Randomized Controlled Trial”, presented by PGI Ibarra. I
realized, that there are certain therapies that can combat depression, anxiety and stress in patients with
COVID-19. During this time, COVID-19 patient who is isolated from society and especially from their love ones
needs support not only medically, but also emotionally since feeling of anxiety and loneliness is common.
After hearing the presentation, I am intrigued with this kind of treatment modality and I will search and
read on articles that can help alleviate psychosocial disorders for my future patients.

Topic: Effect of Dexamethasone on Days Alive and Ventilator-Free in Patients with Moderate or Severe Acute
Respiratory Distress Syndrome and COVID-19
Presentor: PGI Abiera, Nikki Mari F.

After hearing the reflective writing presentation of PGI Abiera entitled, “Effect of Dexamethasone on
Days Alive and Ventilator-Free in Patients with Moderate or Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and
COVID-19”, I realized that Dexamethasone is of great help as adjunct treatment on the standard care of
moderate or severe acute respiratory distress due to Covid-19. I learned that this corticosteroid is safe to use
and would reduce the duration of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome on mechanical
ventilation. As a future physician, I will be able to safely administer this medication to my patients and will
potentially save and minimize the injury cause by the said disease.

Topic: Effect of Gabapentin on Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Double-Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial

Presentor: PGI Dimaisip, Bernadette Diane L.

After hearing the presentation entitled, “Effect of Gabapentin on Hyperemesis Gravidarum: A Double-
Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial”, I realized that hyperemesis gravidarum in early pregnancy can be treated
not just by hydration but we can also give Gabapentin which is a treatment for neuropathic pain. What I’ve
learned from this presentation is the significantly greater reduction in nausea and vomiting of pregnant with
the use of Gabapentin and is safe to be taken during pregnancy as evidence in the result of this study that
there were no congenital defects reported by the participants who undergone this study. As a future
physician, I will research more on the current trends on the management of patients with hyperemesis
gravidarum as this will greatly help me on my future practice.

Topic: Reduction of Adolescent Alcohol Use Through Family-School Intervention: A randomized Trial
Presentor: PGI Baes, Jeco Angelo

After hearing the reflective journal presentation of PGI Baes entitled, “Reduction of Adolescent Alcohol
Use Through Family-School Intervention: A randomized Trial”, I learned that environmental factors such as
peer pressure, social problems can be cater through an in depth focus social environment intervention
strategies in adolescent. As we all know that this stage, adolescents and young adults take more risks than
other age group. They are reckless, and have a thrill-seeking behavior. I realized from this presentation that
schools, parents and peers of an adolescent should work hand in hand to prevent the alcohol dependence up
until their adult life.

Topic: Critical Appraisal on an Article on Prognosis: Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy and Maternal
Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factor Development
Presentor: PGI Malicsi, Cris

After hearing the critical appraisal on Prognosis presented by PGI Malicsi, entitled, “Hypertensive
Disorders of Pregnancy and Maternal Cardiovascular Disease Risk factor Development”, I realized that this
presentation is of great importance on women with hypertension who desires to get pregnant to be aware on
the implications and possible co morbidities during their pregnancy. I learned from this presentation that early
screening and lifestyle modification should be done in order to reduce risk of morbidity which is cardiovascular
disease in pregnant. After the presentation, I had a knowledge on the prognosis of patient with hypertension
disorders during their pregnancy, I will advise them to have a regular consultation with their doctor to keep
them on track on their current health status.

Topic: Increased Risk of Pulmonary Tuberculosis in Patients with Depression: A Cohort Study in Taiwan
Presentor: PGI Diosomito, Allen

Tuberculosis and depression were major public health issues worldwide and the mutual causative
relationships between them were not exhaustive. This statement was stated on the study. After hearing the
critical appraisal on prognosis presented by PGI Diosomito, entitled, “Increased risk of pulmonary tuberculosis
in patients with depression: a cohort study in Taiwan”, I realized that depression is a risk factor that can
contribute to the risk in acquiring pulmonary tuberculosis. I find this article interesting since I did not heard of
this case during my years in studying medicine. After hearing this presentation, I learned that psychosocial
disorder such as depression in patient with tuberculosis should be evaluated in patients to prevent the poor
compliance of treatment since tuberculosis treatment regimen should be continuous. As a future physician, I
will be mindful of my future patients whole well-being to provide an accurate and holistic care.

Topic: Association between Gout and Incident Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Retrospective Cohort Study

In this presentation, I realized that this deliberating disease should have an aggressive management in
order to decreased the incidence of this disease. After hearing the presentation, I learned that women with
gout has a higher risk in acquiring type 2 diabetes mellitus due to hormonal factor specifically the hormone
estrogen. As a future physician, I will read more on articles on this topic to future understand the disease
association and manage my patients accurately.

Topic: Diabetes Mellitus and treatment outcomes of pulmonary tuberculosis: a cohort study
Presentor: PGI Nieva, Mary Syrahlynn

Studies have reported an association between diabetes mellitus and increased risk of developing
pulmonary tuberculosis. After hearing this presentation by PGI Nieva, I realized that treatment varies in each
individual and information gathered from this study will help me as a future physician with the plan of
treatment. I learned from this presentation that, the risk for PTB treatment failure in patients with diabetes
mellitus as co morbidity has a 91% or the PTB treatment failure is 5.91 times more likely to happen with PTB
patients with DM than with PTB patients without DM as co-morbidity. As a future physician, I will be able to
plan for the treatment regimen for my patient by understanding and learning on the prioritization of disease.

Topic: Ovarian cancer prognosis in women with endometriosis: a retrospective nationwide cohort study of 32,
419 women
Presentor: PGI Palacol, Carissa Joy

Endometriosis is a disease with an estimated prevalence of 176 million women worldwide.

Endometriosis is a frequent cause of subfertility, pelvic pain, and a wide variety of other symptoms. Some
small studies have reported that women with ovarian cancer and endometriosis have a better prognosis than
women with ovarian cancer without endometriosis.
In this presentation, I learned that the diagnosis of histologically proven endometriosis is associated
with an increased ovarian cancer prognosis. After the presentation, I realized that has a future clinician
catering to patient with this disease, being vigilant in the management is important by advising the patient to
have her regular check-up. As a future physician, I will further acquire knowledge on the management of this
disease.
