Marker magnets for pipelines

Customer Benefits The ROSEN Advantage

Optimization of benchmarking on pipelines saves cost and For most critical sections of offshore pipelines, an Encap

In order to detect pipeline damage or weaknesses before extended design life and applicability in “difficult” environ
they crack, the inside of pipes is regularly examined by ments like shore areas, areas were the salt water or the

defects can be assigned to precise geographic positions.

For this purpose, marker magnets are used. These are

attached at precisely defined locations every 1-2 km, typically
in the 12 o’clock position on the pipeline. The 12 o’clock
position is especially suitable for this purpose, because
experience shows that this part of the pipe wall is less likely
to be affected by defects than any other part and because
the magnetic field generated there does not have a negative
impact on the measurement of the inspection tool.

When the tool passes this point, its electronics will register
a strong magnetic field and record its location in an internal
Marker Magnet
memory unit together with the precise time of day. In
addition, an odometer constantly logs the distance covered
and again stores this information using the tool’s on-board
software. However, since the odometer is, depending on
the medium, not always completely reliable, the position
N S
of defects is later checked against marker magnet data.
Based on the combined data from the marker magnets and
the odometer, the subsequent analysis can determine the

location of any detected defects within the pipeline with great
accuracy.

For underwater pipelines, the same position determination Marker position

method applies. The only difference is that stronger magnets

are used here, since offshore pipelines usually have stronger
exterior coatings than onshore pipelines. If required, high-
performance marker magnets for underwater pipelines can
be equipped with a signal buoy. There is no need for any of
the magnets to be removed from the pipeline, since they can
be reused for further measurements in the future.
