Doctor Shaun noticed that the patient was experiencing the signs of pancreatic cancer,
he then told this to Dr. Neil. At first the doctor was not convinced on what he observed on the
patient, however, after realizing of what Doctor Shaun said, he immediately asked Doctor
Shaun with the help of another doctor named Claire to perform some diagnostic test to confirm
the presence of patient’s disease.
Before interacting with the patient, Dr. Neil told Dr. Shaun that they shouldn’t tell the patient
on the reason why they should perform some diagnostic test to prevent patient from being
anxious about his condition. However, Dr. Shaun found it unethical of not telling the truth
about what the patient’s disease, therefore he directly told to the patient that due to his
symptoms he might have pancreatic cancer.
The result of the diagnostic test confirmed that the patient have a stage 3 pancreatic cancer
which limits his life for less than a year if not treated. There were only two options in order to
treat the patient’s condition. The first was to perform a surgery which can lengthen the life of
the patient however, it also have risks of post-operative complications that may lead to
patient’s death. The second one was to let the disease as it is by not doing anything which also
prevents patient from the risk of post-operative complications.
The doctors had confessed to the patient that his condition was severe and he had only less
than a year to live. The doctor informed the patient and his family about the consequences of
the procedure and they let them decide on what will be the best for the patient. The patient’s
family decided to proceed the surgery. At first, the surgery went well and the patient’s
condition had been stabilized. However, after a day of surgery, the post-operative
complications struck and an emergency surgery should be done. The doctors did all what they
can to save the patient but unfortunately the patient died due to the severity of post-operative
complications
The family regretted their decision about pursuing their father’s operation. They blamed each
other saying that they were the one who agreed on their father’s operation. On that situation,
Dr. Shaun interfered to their arguments and said that it was the patient’s own decision to be
operated. However, the truth was the patient only depended on his family’s decision.
In conclusion, veracity should be necessarily used in medical profession because it is the basis
of the trust relationship established between a patient and a health care provider. However in
some cases you may oppose veracity just like the scenario when Dr. Shaun interfered the
patient’s family’s commotion. It might be ethically considered because when the truth can’t
help someone you should lie.
