RFP: Research on Hybrid Stand-Alone Power System with

High-gain High-efficiency dc-dc converter and Extended

Battery Life.
The research focusses to exploit low voltage energy sources such as
piezoelectric sensors (PZES), microbial fuel cell (MFC) and photovoltaic (PV)
cells. Front end dc-dc converter step-up the dc low voltages to high voltage
Short Summary for power supply. Bi-directional dc-dc converter is employed between
battery and high voltage dc-link. Battery energy storage system is employed
(100 Words Max) to meet the load demand when no source is live. The research aims to utilize
renewable energy sources, achieve high-gain high-efficiency dc-dc
converter with minimal power losses, reduce voltage stresses across the
switches and handle excess power generation.
The commonly used energy sources for hybrid stand-alone power systems
are photovoltaic and wind power. These sources are capable of generating
low and high voltage. High input voltage is avoided in order to prevent
voltage arcing and parasitic capacitance issues therefore low input voltage is
preferred. Since the required load voltage is usually much higher (e.g. 220
and 440 V), the low input voltage is substantially boosted. The conventional
dc-dc converter can offer high-gain but at cost of mitigated efficiency. The
proposed project employs piezoelectric sensors (PZES), microbial fuel cell
(MFC) and photovoltaic (PV) cells for generating low input voltage. A novel
Purpose of the high-gain high-efficiency dc-dc converter is employed to boost up the
Project voltage (e.g. 220 or 400 V). The high-gain of the converter is achieved by
utilization of the coupled inductor. The output voltage appears at common DC
(500 Words Max) link which is connected to the load as well as to the battery interface. This
battery energy storage system is essential for stand-alone applications in
order to maintain an uninterruptible power supply. High-gain high efficiency
bi-directional dc-dc converter is used between Dc link and battery to
buck/boost the voltage. This study enables the use of low voltage unutilized
sources (PZES, MFC and PV), offers high-gain, high-efficiency and reduced
voltage stresses across the switches. This project also employs required
power tracking (RPT) despite of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) to
avoid excess power generation and use of dump loads.
