no to cuts - education is a right!
Students are facing unprecedented
attacks from the Con-Dem government,
on our right to a decent education and
to a decent future. That’s why I believe
that our Students’ Union should be
doing everything in its power to organise
the fightback against education cuts
and tuition fee rises. If we allow them to
happen, job losses and course closures
will devastate our campus. So we need a
union that will lead a campaign against
cuts at Leeds; organising rallies, demos,
occupations and strikes.
On a national scale, we should be
working to escalate the student
struggle, and linking with workers in
trade unions also organising against
cuts. A campaign strong enough could
stop the fees increase, save EMA and
end the government’s cuts agenda. The
wealth is there in society to avoid cuts.
The bankers (who caused the financial
crisis) continue to indulge in enormous
bonuses, billions have been spent on
brutal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and
even our own Vice-Chancellor is paid
more than £200,000 a year.
My Record
I am Press Officer for Leeds University
Against Cuts (LUAC), I played a leading
role in the Leeds occupation, and
I’m also President of Leeds Socialist
Students. With LUAC I helped build for
the mass demos where over 3,000
students in Leeds walked out defiance
of the government. I also pushed Leeds
University Union to fully mobilise for the
52,000 strong NUS demo in November.
Accountability
The current student exec is completely
removed from the interests of ordinary
students. If you’re going to represent
students, you need to live like them. If
elected I will only take for my living costs
the equivalent of the full loan and grant,
donating the rest back to organisations
fighting the cuts as well as all attacks
on young and working class people.
