Lesson 1 Title: Robots: Characteristics

Suggested Time Allotment: 60 minutes

Part 1. Preparati on
A. Rationale
This lesson is important because this introduces them to the most important topic on robotics:
robot characteristics. All throughout their journey on robotics, they need to keep in mind these four
main characteristics of a robot.

B. Standards (RoboTek 7 Competencies; NGSS)

NGSS Standards
Constructing explanations and designing solutions

C. Learning Outcomes
 Define the term “robot”
 Identify the characteristics of a robot

D. Learning Resources
Materials: Learning Module

Technology: ICT (PowerPoint)

Part 2. Lesson Proper

A. Engage

PUZZLE

Group the class into four. Ask the pupils to solve a puzzle and post it on the
white board.

Guided Questions:
1. What image is formed? (robot)
2. Describe the image. (The robot has eyes, mouth, antenna. It has hands,
and wheels)
3. What makes a robot move? (by using his wheels or the robot moves
because it has a battery)

D. Elaborate

Characteristics of a robot
Here are some important characteristics of a robot.

Sensing Movement

Characteristics
of a robot

Energy Intelligence

Why robots should have these characteristics? (a robot need these characteristics to perform a
task well; a robot needs sensing to detect its surroundings; a robot should have energy to
perform a task; a robot should move from one place to another; a robot should have
intelligence, it should follow his programmer’s order.)
