Title/Type of Lesson: Multiplication Strategies (array, repeated addition, equal

groupings)

Related Virginia Standard of Learning

4.4) The student will
a) Demonstrate fluency with multiplication facts through 12 x 12, and the
corresponding division facts
b) Estimate and determine the sums, differences, and products of whole
numbers
d) Create and solve single-step and multistep practical problems
involving addition, subtraction, and multiplication and single step
practical problems involving division with whole numbers

Lesson Objectives
Students will...
● Describe appropriate multiplication strategies
● Identify fact families
● Estimate the products of whole numbers

Context of Lesson
Why is this an appropriate activity for these students at this time? How does this
lesson fit in the curriculum sequence? How does this lesson fit with what you know
about child development?

Prior knowledge assumed/ or front load info needed

Students have learned these strategies in 3rd grade so we will be focusing on a
review week to recall this information. There will be a corresponding day
associated with each strategy. On the ‘off’ days students will have an opportunity
to further review these strategies.

Essential/Guiding Question(s)
What is the purpose of multiplication?
