Legislators split over ‘use-it-or-lose-it’ elections bills

Bills would require election commissions to send confirmation
notices to registered voters who did not vote in recent elections

Supporters of the bills —
House Bill 4 and Senate Bill
2588 — say they would help
keep voter rolls up to date and
accurate, while opponents, in-
cluding the Birmingham-based
Southern Poverty Law Center,
say it violates the National Voter
Registration Act and risks purg-
ing registered voters from the
rolls just for skipping elections.
Currently, election commis-
sions are permitted to remove
names from rolls if voters die,
move away, or are convicted of
certain felonies. SB 2588 would
allow voters to be removed for
failing to respond to a confirma-
tion notice, vote at least once or
update their voter registration
within four years of the notice
being delivered. Under that bill,
commissions must send the no-
tices to “each registered elector
who has failed to vote at least
once in the previous two (2)

Kenneth Eccles Dyer, 78, and Gloria Joyce
Dyer, 81, of Columbus, MS, passed away Thurs-
day, January 28, 2021, at their residence. After
a lifetime of being together on this earth, they
left to be together forever within an hour and fif-
teen minutes of each other. This is a testament
to their 60+ year commitment of love and epito-
mizes their marriage vows till death do they part.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, Feb-

Home, Columbus, MS, with Bro. Byron Benson

Mr. Dyer was born April 6, 1942, in White-
water, MO, to the late Elwin and Addie Cappel-
la Dyer. He received his bachelor’s degree in
Math from Southeastern Louisana University.
Mr. Dyer retired from Weyerhaeuser Co. after
26 years as the Safety Traning Manager. He
was currently employed with East Mississippi
Community College as Technical Training and
Instructor. Mr. Dyer was a member of Masonic
Grand Lodge of Mississippi, Knights Templer of
Mississippi, Shriners of Mississippi, Yorkrites
of Mississippi, and Scottishrites of Mississippi.
He was an umpire and called games during the
1980 Little League World Series, as well as with
the Southeastern Conference – Mississippi State
Baseball from 1985 – 1989. Mr. Dyer was a mem-
ber of East End Baptist Church.
Mrs. Dyer was born September 27, 1939, to the
late Willie and Florence Reid Rushing, in New
Orleans, LA. She was a member of the Eastern
Star of Mississippi and East End Baptist Church.
Mrs. Dyer worked as a teacher for several years
and at Baptist Memorial Hospital – Golden Tri-
angle, Columbus, MS, as a switchboard operator
from 2006 – 2010.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dyer was pre-
ceded in death by her 2 sisters, Gladys Rushing
and Gwen Baker.
They were preceded in death by their daugh-
ter, Ginger Rogers; 2 grandchildren, Jeremy Rog-
ers and Rueben Rogers; and 2 great-grandchil-
dren, Caleb Bankston and Chase Bankston.
Mr. & Mrs. Dyer were survived by their
daughters, Gina Dyer, Greta Miller, Gidget Dyer,
and Gawain McGuff; 8 grandchildren; and 8
great-grandchildren; Mr. Dyer’s brother, Keith

‘old’ Republican party
I believe having at least two
major parties capable of debating
issues is important for a healthy
democracy. If only we still had
that.

Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA)
and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).
Putting aside Taylor Greene’s
public support of assassinations
(see how nice I am?), I would be
happy to see a Republican party
not populated with people who
have left the world of reality and,
to pick one of many examples,
who are convinced that the fires
in California have been started
with lasers from space — whether
controlled by Jews or not. NOt
that there’s any problem with that.
You’ve lost me as soon as you say
‘lasers from space’. I don’t even
need to hear what they’ve been
supposedly used for. Or who by.

mail from critics lately
asking if I’m happy with
the Biden administration.
They point to some of the new
president’s executive orders
— the one about the Key-
stone XL pipeline, or the one
rescinding the “Mexico City”
policy withholding funds from
international organizations
that perform or advocate for
abortion. They ask, snidely, Mona Charen
whether I’m proud of my vote
for the Democrat.
My answer is a resounding yes. It’s
not because I think Joe Biden will pursue
a policy agenda I will agree with most of
the time. It’s because we just came within and The Wall Street Journal called for
a whisker of losing our democracy, and
this presidency is a chance to rebuild it.
We may yet blow it. Matters like the Key-
stone pipeline and even the Mexico City
policy are trifles by comparison.
My correspondents won’t under-
stand this. Rightworld is in the process,
once again, of bending reality to serve
their leader, and in so doing, they are
compounding the moral abdication that
brought us Jan. 6.
The immediate reactions to the
attempted coup sound strangely ma-
ture and responsible now that the right
has regrouped and settled back into its
accustomed posture of Trump-excusing.
The new narrative is that an impeach-
ment trial would be 1) unconstitutional,
2) divisive or 3) helpful to Trump because understand the party itself. If you’re

attack on the Capitol, Sen. Pat Toomey

Mitch McConnell said Trump
provoked the mob by feeding
them lies, and McConnell sig-
naled that he might be open
to impeachment. Rep. Kevin
McCarthy said Trump was
responsible for the storming
of the Capitol, and warned
his caucus not to criticize members who
voted for impeachment because it might
endanger their lives. National Review
published pro-impeachment articles,
Trump to resign. Ten House Republicans,
including a sulphuric Liz Cheney, voted to
impeach. Even Ari Fleisher said: “At this
point, I won’t defend him anymore. ... He’s
on his own.”
Oh, but he’s not. Just a few days later,
Fleisher was retweeting a Wall Street
Journal editorial suggesting that we real-
ly ought to move on, and that “Democrats
and the press are addicted to Trump.”
The Oregon GOP’s official position is that
the assault on the Capitol was a false flag
operation, mounted to “discredit” Trump.
Graham was back onsides in a matter of
days. Having weathered harassment by
Trump fanatics at National Airport, he
skittered back to the boss, telling Fox
News that “I hope people in our party
wanting to erase Donald Trump from the
party, you’re gonna get erased.”
Like dominoes, the old gang began
falling into line. Prof. Jonathan Turley,
who’s been saying that impeaching a
non-incumbent is unconstitutional, was
invited to the Senate GOP luncheon. All
Murkowski, Collins and Toomey) voted
for a resolution introduced by Sen. Rand
Paul echoing the Turley view. Trump
loyalists circulated a petition to remove
Cheney from her House leadership post.
National Review published a John Bolton
piece arguing that the second impeach-
ment was as “flawed as the first.” Too
partisan. Too hasty. It will give him a
platform. You know the drill.
Sen. Marco Rubio said the impeach-
ment is “stupid.” Oh, and did he mention
“divisive”?
The infinitely flexible Nikki Haley
asks not whether former Trump attempt-
ed to steal the election, but how low the
base would like her to sink. Appearing
on the Laura Ingraham show, she offered
up the expected persecution narrative:
“They beat him up before he got into
office. They are beating him up after
he leaves office. I mean, at some point,
I mean, give the man a break. I mean,
move on.”
See how this works? It was Trump who
was beaten, not Officer Sicknick.
The persecution complex is eternal
— the sense that Democrats and “the
media” are willing to do anything to “get”
Trump and that therefore they must be
ready to respond in kind. We’ve run the
experiment and gotten our answer. There
really is nothing Trump could do that
would forfeit the support of the GOP. He
didn’t literally shoot someone on Fifth Av-
enue, but he sabotaged Americans’ faith
in elections, attempted to intimidate the
secretary of state of Georgia into altering
the election count and set a violent mob
against the Congress (killing one officer
and four others). He has blood on his
hands. But in the words of his No. 1 toady,
Lindsey Graham: “He’s going to be the
most important voice in the Republican
Party for a long time to come.”
So, no regrets about voting for an hon-
orable Democrat. I only pray that, with
the reprieve we’ve bought, we can repair
the awful breach in this country before
it’s too late.

Mr. McCarty was born December 22, 1964,
in Long Beach, CA, to the late James Lewis and
Patsy Jane Morris McCarty. He was a veteran,
having served in the United States Navy. Mr.
McCarty worked for PACCAR Engine Company,
in Columbus, MS, as an assembly technician. He
enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren, hunting
with his sons, and spending time with family
having cook outs. Mr. McCarty loved watching
Clint Eastwood movies and was a big fan of
baseball, football, and LSU. Mr. McCarty was
also a member of the Crisis Response Team in
Mississippi.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in
death by his wife, Amanda Dale Sargent McCarty.
Mr. McCarty is survived by his daughter,
Brittany McCarty of Columbus, MS; sons,
Nathan (Cheyenne) McCarty of Northport, AL,
Gabriel McCarty and Jacob McCarty, both of
Columbus, MS; grandchildren, Dallas McCarty,
Kaspian Silas, and Cooper McCarty; and brother,
James McCarty of Pearl, MS.

Ben worked in cabinetry, construction, and
farming. He and Silva operated Golden Age Care
Home for 25 years. He served for many years
as deacon of Magnolia Mennonite Church of
Macon, MS.
Ben was preceded in death by his son, Timothy
Graber; son-in-law Kevin Yoder; grandsons,
Brian Graber and Christopher Schrock; and
several great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Silva, of Macon, MS;
and children, Lois (Titus) Schrock, of Camilla,
GA, Norma Jean (Galen) Schrock of Macon,

Wiley received his medical degree in 1960
from the University of Mississippi Medical
Center at Jackson, and while there, he served
as student body president. Wiley continued his
medical training in Memphis, first as an intern
at the City of Memphis Hospital and then as a
general surgery resident at the Kennedy VA
Hospital. He completed his training with a
three year fellowship in orthopaedic surgery at
The Campbell Foundation. He remained at the
Campbell Clinic first as a member of the staff
and subsequently as a partner. Wiley served as
orthopaedic consultant to the Memphis State
University Athletic teams and to the Liberty
Bowl.
In June of 1977, Wiley and his family moved to
Columbus, MS, where he founded the Columbus
Orthopaedic Clinic, P.A. Soon thereafter, he
became the team orthopaedist for the Mississippi
State University athletic teams. He retired from
the practice of medicine in 1996.
All of Wiley’s professional and community
activities are too numerous to list, but included
serving as president of the Mississippi
Orthopaedic Society and as the Mississippi
Representative on the Board of Councillors for
the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
He was also an advisory member of the National
Athletic Trainers Association and a contributor
to the Orthopaedic Research and Education
Foundation. In Columbus, Wiley was a member
of the Columbus Rotary Club and is a Paul Harris
Fellow. In 1996, Wiley was selected as King of
Junior Auxiliary Charity Ball. He served on the
Boards of Directors for Heritage Academy, First
Columbus National Bank, and the Friends of the
Library.
In his free time, Wiley stayed busy landscaping
his yard and gardens or working and hunting
on the farm he shared with his son. Most of all,
Wiley loved his family and enjoyed spending time
with them whether at home or traveling. Wiley
never met a stranger and he will be remembered

William (Bill) Edward Eads
Jr. of Old Hickory, TN, passed
in peace, at the age of 90, on
January 26, 2021. Bill was born
in Columbus, Mississippi, to
the late William Edward Eads
Sr. and Annie Johnson.
Bill was a man of strong
Christian faith. He was a
member of Cooks United
Methodist Church and a
veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Bill retired from
Mississippi State University as the head of
Property/Receiving Control. Bill loved sports,
but primarily, the Mississippi State Bulldogs,
Tennessee Titans, and watching his favorite
baseball team, the Atlanta Braves on TV. Bill
was a very talented craftsman. He referred to his
pastime as “piddling around”. Bill had knowledge,
ingenuity and natural ability to create simple
to complex items such as dog ramps, furniture
pieces, and cabinets.
Bill had a generous heart who took great joy
in helping others. He was quick to establish
connections with people he met wherever he
went. He loved so many things in life, such
as children, animals, and nature. Watching
airplanes fly over, feeding deer and birds, looking
at the clouds or going to the lake and watching
the boaters and other activities brought him so
much pleasure in life.

Mrs. Guist was born November 1, 1925, in
Helena, Arkansas to the late Paul and Rosena
Plattner Von Kanel. She was a member of
Schaeffer’s Chapel United Methodist Church,
Columbus, MS. Mrs. Guist was a retired secretary
with the Civil Service, she enjoyed bowling and
being league secretary for many years. She loved
singing and was song director at Deerbrook and
Shaeffer’s Chapel. Mrs. Guist was a great cook
and made the world’s best pecan pie!
Mrs. Guist was preceded in death by her
husband, Simon Guist; daughter, Marlene
Nanney; son-in-law, Stan Riddle; sister, Pauline
Butler; and brothers, Lewis Von Kanel, Edmond
Von Kanel, Ernest Von Kanel, William Von Kanel
and Herman Von Kanel.
Mrs. Guist is survived by her daughter,
Teresa “Terry” Riddle, Columbus, MS; son,
Dr. Steven (Deborah) Guist, Columbus, MS;
son-in-law, Bill Nanney, Phoenix, AZ; and was
a loving “Meemaw” to five grandchildren,

“Most of it is coming
from the Republican par-
ty based off the false al-
legation of voter fraud in
the presidential election,
I think,” he said. “It’s re-
ally disheartening that
this is such a concentrat-
ed effort to purge people
off the rolls instead of
trying to make it easier
for people to vote. It’s just
the times we’re living in.”
Most local legislators
said they haven’t read
the bills, which were just
released from committee
along with dozens of oth-
er bills currently await-
ing approval in the Leg-
islature. However, those
who responded to The
Dispatch’s requests for
comment were divided
along party lines over the
issue, with Republicans
saying they like the idea
of the bill helping keep
the voter rolls up-to-date
and Democrats saying
they worry about remov-
ing electors in violation of
voting rights.
Sen. Chuck Younger

bus) said he
has not read
the bills and
can’t say yet
whether he
will support
them, but
that he is Younger
“definitely”
for “purging” the voter
rolls.
“For everything, not
just fraud,” he said. “If
there’s dead people on
there, they need to be tak-
en off. It’s not a Democrat
or Republican thing to
me. It’s just they need to
be purged and make sure
that everybody’s where
they are, in my opinion.”
Current process
for removing electors
The National Voter
Registration Act requires
election officials to main-
tain up-to-date voter re-
cords but prohibits purg-
ing names under certain
circumstances, such as
within 90 days of a feder-
al election.
Caren Short, senior
staff attorney with South-
ern Poverty Law Center,
said the law also prohib-
its election commissions
from removing regis-
trants just for failure to
vote.
A similar law to the two
Mississippi’s Legislature
is considering passed in
Ohio and was upheld by
the Supreme Court in
2018. But Short said that
“use-it-or-lose-it” law still
violates the NVR A.
“You cannot remove
people just for not vot-
ing,” she said.
Moreover, she said,
starting with lists of peo-
ple who have voted is not
an accurate way of telling
whether individuals have
moved or died. Confirma-
tion notices also require
the voter to do the work,
rather than the election
commission.
“It’s on the burden of
the voter then to respond
to, and if they fail to vote
for those four years, and
if they miss that card,
then they will be removed
after a period of four
years,” Short said. “So
if you fail to vote for six
years, and you miss that
card, you’ll be removed
from the voting rolls.”
She said both the
NVR A and Southern Pov-
erty Law Center encour-
age states to use the na-
tional change of address
program to figure out
who has moved.
Currently, Mississip-
pi election commissions
send confirmation no-
tices based on returned
mail, such as jury sum-
mons, voter registration
cards or property tax
forms, said Sissy Smith-
erman, vice president of
the Election Commis-
sioner Association of
Mississippi and District 2
election commissioner in
Oktibbeha County.
“Anything like that,
that’s a trigger for us to
send a confirmation card
to see if we can reach that
voter,” Smitherman said.
“If we cannot reach that
voter when we get two
returned mailings, the
clock starts ticking. And
then we’ve got to wait two
federal general elections,
which is two years apart,
before we can purge. So
you’re looking at the earli-
est that we can purge any-
body is three years right
now — this with return
mailing, not just because
they (did not) vote.”
She said election com-
missioners currently do
not look at voting records,
except to see if an elderly
registrant may require an
absentee ballot.
While Smitherman did
not offer an opinion on
the bills in the Legisla-
ture, she did say it could
affect registered voters
who simply aren’t inter-
ested in voting in every
election.
“We personally like
to get that trigger so we
can move forward that
way, because if you go in
there and start making
people inactive because
they haven’t voted, you’re
going to lose a lot of vot-
ers,” Smitherman said.
“And most races, besides
the state and county and
president election, you
might only have 20 per-
cent to 40 that might ac-
tually vote. And that’s
sad.
“We’ve had small elec-
tions that only 8 percent
showed up,” she added.
“... We had one lady that
had never ever voted in
20 years that came out in
November and voted.”
Short said SB 2588
and HB 4, if passed,
would largely affect
Black voters, low-income
voters and young voters.
She echoed Karriem that
the bills were written in
response to allegations
of voter fraud in the 2020
election, despite the fact
that, she argued, there
is no evidence of wide-
spread voter fraud from
people using the iden-
tity of people who have
moved, or voting in juris-
dictions they no longer
live in.
“They’re also target-
ing people now who don’t
vote as much,” she said.
“This is younger people,
this is people who are a
little more disenchanted
with our political system.
And that’s not fair. We
shouldn’t be punishing
people who don’t vote.
Voting is a fundamental
right. For people who
say this is going to com-
bat voter fraud, show me.
Prove it to me. You can’t.
It’s not there.”
Balancing freedom
and ‘accuracy’
Sen. Angela Turn-
er-Ford (D-West Point)
said she hasn’t read the
bills yet, but she does not
support purging voters
from rolls.
“It sounds like it would
make it eas-
ier for the
election
commis-
sioners to
purge peo-
ple from
the rolls,
and I do not Turner-Ford

that,” she said. “... I think
any time we start dealing
with registered voters,
there is certainly the po-
tential that people are
being disenfranchised.
I would have to explore
what the current process
is on how the rolls are
purged.”
Rep. Lynn Wright
(R-Columbus) also said
he would
have to
read the
bills before
deciding
whether
to support
them, but
Wright
he does
not have a problem with
purging rolls.
“The voter rolls should
have to be purged regu-
larly,” he said.
Sen. Bart Williams
(R-Starkville) said there
is a balance between
keeping rolls updated and
ensuring commissioners
don’t disenfranchise vot-
ers unnecessarily.
“I want to make sure
we afford
every citi-
zen quali-
fied to vote
the ability
to vote. We
don’t want
to hinder
that in any Williams
way. At the same time, we
want to try to have as ac-
curate voter rolls as pos-
sible,” he said, adding he
would want to research
the bills and make sure
they satisfy both those
concerns.
Rep. Cheikh Taylor
(D-Starkville) declined
to comment on the bill
before reading it, though
he added he generally
is against purging. Rep.
Dana McLean (R-Colum-
bus) and Rep. Rob Rober-
son (R-Columbus) did not
respond to calls from The

Nevertheless, Howland and
the Bulldogs aren’t apologiz-
ing for dominating the match-
up any time soon.
“I think that was fun and
we got everybody a chance to
play,” Howland said. “We got
some guys some important
minutes that contribute every
day in practice that don’t get
to play much in the game. So
it was a fun game for our team
to get a resounding win and
hopefully that bodes well for
us moving forward.”
Regardless, the sweet taste
of victory only lasts for so long
with the latter half of a four-
game Southeastern Confer-
ence road slate on the docket
this week. First up, an 8 p.m.
Tuesday tipoff against Arkan-
sas (13-5, 5-4 SEC) in Fayette-
ville.
“I think the last three
games we’ve really improved
defensively,” Howland said.
“I think we’ve played the best
three games, defensively,
than we’ve done all year. Any
time you play good defense
you give yourself a chance to
win and that is always true, es-
pecially on the road. Defense
is what travels. So you have to
do a good job in transition and
do a good job in the half court.
“Arkansas runs a lot of mo-
tion and they probably do as
good of a job as anybody in
our league at cutting without
the ball. So it is something we
are going to try to emphasize
today at practice with the cuts
they make and not losing vi-
sion of your man. A lot of times
people stare at the ball and as
soon as you lose vision of your
man, the Hogs will back-cut
you and burn you. They really
do a great job of that.”
MSU has actually dom-
inated the series recently,
winning the last six contests
against the Razorbacks, in-
cluding a two-game sweep of
the Hogs last year for the first
time in about a decade.
“It’s a little shocking be-
cause it is such a hard place to
play,” Howland said of his 3-1
record at Bud Walton Arena
with MSU. “We’ve been very
fortunate. We’ve had a lot of
good breaks.”
While the Razorbacks have
suffered a few blowout losses
to LSU and Alabama, Arkan-
sas utilizes a balanced offen-
sive attack, considering it’s
one of two SEC teams to have
five active players averaging
in double figures. Leading
that group includes talent-
ed freshman guard Moses
Moody, averaging 16.6 points
and 5.6 rebounds per game.
At his continued pace, Moody
may forego a sophomore sea-
son with Arkansas and de-
clare for the NBA Draft this
summer.
Other double-digit scorers
for the Razorbacks include
JD Notae (13.9 ppg), Indiana
transfer Justin Smith (11.4
ppg), Desi Sills (11.2 ppg) and
Jalen Tate (10.9 ppg).
“This is obviously a very
tough place to play at Arkan-
sas. We’re going to have to
play really well to have suc-
cess over there tomorrow
night,” Howland said. “It’s an
exciting challenge. They’re
very good and they have a
lot of talent. They can really
score and they can really de-
fend.”
Fountain ‘close’ to breaking
in rotation
Howland has never backed
away from playing true fresh-
men during his tenure at Mis-
sissippi State when they’ve
proven deserving of those
minutes. Another member
of the 2020 recruiting class
could be on the brink of earn-
ing meaningful minutes for
the Bulldogs.

White streamlines life on road to ‘22 Olympics

the mountains closed and
the halfpipes shuttered
during a pandemic that
turned the world and
its sports upside down,
Shaun White put dou-
ble-corks on hold and
saved his most intense
workouts for his mind.
He’d be the first to con-

Now 34, and gearing
up for a run at a fourth
Olympic gold medal,
White looked around af-
ter his latest victory, in
2018, and saw too much
— on his calendar, com-
ing out of his pocketbook,

physical possessions
that started to feel a bit
overwhelming. It was
the calendar, too. White
struggled at the 2014
Olympics. During the
run-up to those games
in Russia, he committed
to trying to win two gold
medals — in halfpipe and

slopestyle competition.
But he ended up with
none. He rebooted that
time, too, and focused
only on the halfpipe for
2018. When the chips
were down in Pyeong-
chang, White had just
enough left in the tank at
the end of that contest to
throw the best, most-dif-
ficult run of his life and
win his third gold.
In the aftermath, he
saw his plate filling up
again — namely in a
quest to compete in skate-
boarding at the Summer
Olympics in Tokyo. It be-
came too unwieldy and
too unrealistic a project.
“I thought, ‘I don’t
know if I want to bet fully
on this, and snowboard
was sitting there, so I de-
cided I had to make some
tough decisions and I’m
going to focus on snow-
board,” White said.
Now, the clock is tick-
ing. There are less than
play anymore. And this is
the time.”
A four-time All-Star
and four-time Gold Glove
winner, Pedroia batted

with him and not become
close to him. He just has
that type of personality.”

Pedroia was small in stat-
ure but he burst into the
majors as the AL Rookie
coaches out there.”
Locust said she and
Javadifar have only one
goal, and that’s helping
Tampa Bay beat Kansas
City in the Super Bowl on

“It wouldn’t matter
if we were second in or

I mean, like we acknowl-

been many before us, but
it’s not anything that we
kind of keep in the fore-
front of what we do on a
daily basis.”
Locust and Javadifar

Games and was planning
to compete, but hours
before Sunday’s contest
he said he “tweaked” his
knee during practice and
was pulling out. In the
interview with AP, he
said he came to Aspen
not so much concerned
with a result, but just for
a chance to check out the
competition and also “to
show the general popula-
tion who might think I’m
not riding anymore, that
I’m very, very much still
into it.”
White came to the X
Games without a snow-
board deal for the first
time since he was 7. It
allowed him to plaster a
picture of his niece, Char-
li, on a bottom panel that,
for decades, featured
the word “Burton.” He’s
now tinkering with his
own snowboard designs.
He admits to having no
preconceived notions
about where that will go.
He considers himself
less of a pitchman these
days, more of a behind-
the-scenes investor. His
guitar career has long
been on hold, and though
the series of Air & Style
events he co-owns re-
mains a working oper-
ation, much of that has
also been put on the back
of the Year in 2007, when
he batted .317 with 39
doubles, eight homers
and 50 RBIs.
Despite hitting a home
run that year in his first
World Series at-bat, he
was went unrecognized
when the Series shifted
to Denver and told the Co-
ors Field security guard:
“I’m the guy who took Jeff
Francis onto the Mass
Pike. How’s that?”
The next year, Pedroia
was the AL MVP after hit-
ting .326 with 17 homers
and 83 RBIs while leading
the league with 118 runs,
213 hits and 54 doubles.
“I was always the first
person on the field be-
cause I needed to be,”
Pedroia said on Monday.
“I had to learn from ev-
erybody.”
But his work ethic was
topped only by his confi-
dence.
After he was picked
65th overall in the 2004
draft, team President Sam
Kennedy said, Pedroia
ditched the usual defer-
ence in his first conver-
sation with then-general
manager Theo Epstein
and said: “Bro! What took
you so long?”
Although his team-
coaching in this game
means a lot to him with
his younger sister having
muscular dystrophy.
“To me, it is a spark to
my eyes,” Edwards-He-
laire said. “I can talk to
my little sister and she
sees me play and now
we talk about what is go-
ing on ... and she could
be a positive light to the
NFL and to the football
community, I am excited
about it.”
Arians, who had the
first female coaching in-
tern in 2015 with Jen Wel-
ter in Arizona, said hiring
Locust and Javadifar was
a choice to open a door
for great teachers. Arians
said they “worked their
tails off” and are more
than qualified.
“Inclusivity and di-
versity are great ways
to teach,” Arians said.
“I mean, the more input
from different types of
voices, the better output
you get.”

among men playing in the
burner because of the
pandemic.
“I’m a snowboarder,”
he says when asked what,
exactly, he considers
himself. “And I hate to
say ‘entrepreneur,’ but it’s
just investing in brands
and keeping the rest of
the slate clean right now.
Instead of looking at the
short term, it’s looking at
the next 10 years and see-
ing things I might want
to be part of in the long
run.”
Though he’s serious-
ly contemplating the
2026 Olympics in Italy
— which would be a tidy
bookend to an Olympic
career that started 20
years earlier in the same
country — White seems
content with the reali-
ty that he’s closer to the
end of his career than the
beginning He’s hoping
to approach 2022 differ-
ently than some Olympic
years past — namely, by
acknowledging it’s still
very important to him,
but viewing it more as a
point on the timeline than
the end of it.
“You put so much ex-
pectation on a delayed
future reward, and you
either get it and say ‘OK,
what’s next?’ Or some-
times when you don’t get
it, it’s almost easier be-
cause you go ‘Oh, well,
we’re gonna do it next

said Pedroia was the play-
er he would buy a ticket to
see.
“He played with a little
chip on his shoulder,” Or-
tiz said. “The one thing I
learned for sure was that
this was not about size.
This was about heart. He
was the whole package.”
Pedroia made 11 con-
secutive opening day
starts for the Red Sox,
second in franchise histo-
ry only to Carl Yastrzems-
ki. But his career effec-
tively ended early in the
2017 season when Mach-
ado slid into second base
to break up a double play.
“It sucks,” Machado
said in 2019. “Obviously,
he could down as one of
trenches. Bucs defensive
end Shaq Barrett loves
how Locust is always giv-
ing him tips. She coached
against Barrett’s brother
in semi-pro ball in Bal-
timore where she was a
training camp intern with
the NFL’s Ravens in 2018.
“It’s a blessing to have
her on our team and have
her coaching in the Super
Bowl,” Barrett said.
Locust cautions
against thinking she and
coaches such as Jennifer
King, the first Black fe-
male assistant in the NFL
hired last week as Wash-
ington’s running backs
coach, simply sprung
overnight.
“There’s hundreds of
women that are at various
levels of football, whether
in high school or college
semi-pro,” Locust said.
“And they’ve been out
there kind of doing it on
their own, and they’ve
been earning those posi-
tions on their own with-
out any help from anyone
else.”
Coaching football
wasn’t an option for wom-
en when Locust grew up
time,’ and it gives you
new purpose,” he said.
“But what happens when
you get it, then you get it
again?”
Those were some of
the questions he came
face-to-face with during
a few days he spent last
year with fellow sports
stars, Tom Brady and
Michael Phelps, headlin-
ing a panel at a self-help
seminar.
That self-help experi-
ence sparked a follow-up
visit, which, in many
ways, led to a complete
change in White’s mental
approach.
“I went there solo,” he
said. “I had the hood up. I
thought, I’ll go incognito,
I’ll go in, get a couple tid-
bits and leave. The first
thing (they do) is say ‘Go
hug 10 people.’ Right at
that point, I’m not under
the radar anymore. There
were some awesome, sim-
ple lessons, and the big
part was, you’ve got to
work at this. Do the exer-
cise.”
A bonus from the ses-
sions: It’s where White
met his girlfriend, Nina
Dobrev of “Vampire Di-
aries” fame. They went
public with their rela-
tionship last spring, and
during the interview,
White repeatedly came
back to advice Dobrev
has given him, and the

Asked about the play
on Monday, Pedroia said
he was at peace with it.
“I’m not upset about
anything any more,” he
told reporters. “There
was a slim chance at a
double play, and there was
one guy on planet earth
who could turn it. And

play in 105 games that
year but had surgery af-
terward; he admitted to
rushing back in 2018,
when he lasted only
three games before going
back on the injured list.
The Red Sox won a fran-
chise-record 108 games
on their way to the World
Series.
Unable to play, Pedroia
moved into the role of
elder statesman. “He’s
the heart and soul of this
team,” infielder Brock
Holt said before the start
of the Series.
Boston won in five
games. Pedroia said he
was better able to enjoy
the ’18 Series because
he didn’t have to focus on
playing.
“We had a lot of young
guys and at that time it

After going to Temple for
college, she married, had
two sons and sold insur-
ance.
Around the age of 40,
Locust started playing de-
fensive lineman in a wom-

took a job at her alma ma-
ter, Susquehanna Town-
ship High, as an assistant
working nine years with-
out being paid.
“Did everything that I
could to learn there, did
every job that sometimes
the guys maybe didn’t
want to do because I knew
that it would help kind of
round out my experience
as a coach,” Locust said.
Locust also coached in
semi-pro leagues, a wom-
en’s league and youth
leagues. She attended
the NFL’s annual Wom-
en’s Careers in Football
Forum in 2017 and again
in 2018. Arians hired her
just as the Alliance of
American Football fold-
calming influence she
has lent to his often-hec-
tic life.
He says the pandemic
has allowed him to slow
down. He’s spending a
lot of time with Dobrev,
“and hanging with Toby
and J.J., and feeling good
about things,” White said
of his buddy, 20-year-old
snowboarder Toby Mill-
er, and their coach, 2002
Olympic bronze medalist
J.J. Thomas.
When not working on
his mental/emotional
outlook, White has used
the extra time to sharpen
skills in the kitchen. He
spoke of a truffle risotto
he’s trying to perfect and
a parsley-lemon-Dijon
garlic sauce for a salmon
dish. That one, he says,
might be nearing a “10.”
As White delves into
the trials and travails of
his new pastime, cook-
ing, it seems as though
he could just as easily be
talking about about snow-
boarding — or business
— or relationships — or
life in general.
“I’m just nervous — I
don’t want to hurt any-
body,” he says. “You wor-
ry about something not
being prepared properly.
But once you clear that
fear, it becomes a lot eas-
ier and a lot more enjoy-
able.”

In 2019, Pedroia played
just six games. He contin-

is owed $12 million for
2021 as the final season
in an eight-year, $110 mil-
lion deal that also has de-
ferred payments remain-
ing through 2027.
He wouldn’t rule out a
future in coaching.
“I’ll be in the game
somehow. I’m always
going to be around,” he
said. “I’m always here for
everybody in the Red Sox
organization.”
But for now, his son
has a flag football practice
he will be helping with.
“I don’t want to miss
a thing in their life,” Pe-
droia said. “They deserve
that.”

who also is a physical
therapist to the Bucs’
staff. Javadifar didn’t
meet Arians until her in-
terview.
“His first question
was, ‘What can you bring
to the table?’” Javadifar
recalled. “And, you know,
I had laid it out there, and
it was pretty seamless.”
Both Locust and Ja-
vadifar hope the Bucs’
success leads to more
opportunities for people
who look like them. Only
two of the NFL’s seven
head coaching jobs went
to minorities in the latest
hiring spree.
