User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 3

Welcome!
Welcome to the Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD-Rom. You now have immediate access to what
has been called the most comprehensive collection of psychic information that has ever been obtained
from a single source.

When Edgar Cayce (1877-1945) died, he left behind more than 14,000 documented readings and related
correspondence. Today, we can study the Edgar Cayce information in ways that even Edgar Cayce and
his contemporaries could never have imagined.

In the early days of the Cayce work, the only readings that individuals had access to were their own
personal readings from Edgar Cayce. The readings were not available to the public in a central location
nor were they indexed and cross-indexed as a means of finding specific subject matter.

Before computers, the “indexing project” was a very detailed and complicated manual endeavor in
which every reading was read, and re-read, in order to find every topic that was mentioned in every
reading. For example, although Cayce may have been giving an individual a health reading on a topic
such as “diabetes,” during the course of the reading he could have mentioned such things as a specific
diet, medicinal products to take, suggestions for exercise and improving attitudes and emotions,
recommended osteopathic adjustments, and a host of other topics, all of which eventually needed to be
indexed. The indexing project really began
after Edgar Cayce’s death and was not
completed until 1971! Today, of course, all of
the subjects mentioned in the readings are
easily accessible with a computer.

This User’s Guide has been pulled together to

explain the Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD-Rom
in terms of what is available here and how to
access it.

We hope you will find many, many hours of

fulfillment, inspiration, knowledge, fascination,
and information in this wealth of material!

Navigating and Searching the Readings with the Sonar Search Engine
You are now ready to begin your exploration of the Edgar Cayce material.

The Sonar program is a great research tool for people who are studying and/or researching the Edgar
Cayce readings. There are a variety of ways to search, and the program has search capabilities that can
be used by the beginner as well as approaches and resources which may appeal to the more advanced
user/researcher.

The opening screen of your readings search software contains navigation menus and buttons along the
top, two search boxes on the left, “Find in (the) Readings” and “Find in (the) Alphabetic Index,” four tabs
with the contents of the reading being displayed to the right, (“Index,” “Background,” “Text,” “Reports”)
and the Edgar Cayce Health Database menu options in the bottom window.

Each of these is discussed in greater detail.

Searching with “Find in Readings”

You can use the Find in (the) Readings search window for a word, a phrase, or a reading number. If you
enter a reading number, enter whole numbers only and not the zeros that sometimes appear before the
numbers in a search string. (In the example below, a search returns the number 0996-0012; however, if
you wanted to search for that particular reading number, you would enter 996-12.)

It is important to note that if you enter more than one word in the search box, Sonar searches for the
PHRASE, not each of the words. For example, if you searched for “Hall of Records” you would only find
documents where the words are listed as a phrase. It would not find documents that include “Hall” and
“of” and “Records.”

Let’s imagine that your interest was Atlantis. If you wanted to begin searching the Edgar Cayce material
for information on Atlantis, you could simply type “Atlantis” (without the quotation marks) into the Find
in Readings search window and press enter. [Note: as an alternative to pressing “enter,” you can
also click on the first square blue icon at the top left of the screen, which is the Search Now icon.]

If you enter “Atlantis” in this first search box, you will receive back a prompt that states: “1389
occurrence(s), 966 document(s).” This means that the word “Atlantis” occurs in 1,389 instances and is
mentioned in 966 documents—a document can be an Index, Background, Text, or Report.

Click the OK button to continue.

The Sonar Search program is designed so that the document with the most frequent citations of the
word or phrase being searched will appear first. The document with the second most frequent citations
will appear second, and so forth. In this case, note the series of numbers that appear centered at the top
of your screen:
R0996-0012.TXT [Pg. 3, Level 1] 1 of 1389

After doing a search, you will always see a letter (I, B, T, or R, standing for Index, Background, Text, and
Report, respectively), followed by four digits, a dash, and then another four digits. The zeros before
whole numbers are ignored when referencing the readings, so this string of numbers essentially tells you
that:
You are looking at a Report document, for reading 996-12. The first mention of Atlantis
(highlighted on the screen) is from page 3 of that document, and this is the first occurrence of
Atlantis in the 1,389 instances that this specific search returned.

Note that the Reports tab is also highlighted on the screen in front of you, which means that the Report
is what is being displayed on the screen. A scroll bar on the right-hand side of the screen will enable you
to go anywhere within this particular document. You could also click on any of the four tabs associated
with reading 996-12 (Index, Background, Text, and Report), and read any of the documents associated
with this particular reading.

To see other occurrences of “Atlantis” in this particular search, look at the series of blue square icons
near the top of the screen. Two of those icons contain a large triangle on the left of the icon with the
triangle pointing toward the right. If you mouse over the first of those two icons, which is eighth from
the left, it will say, Next (found) document, the second icon with the large right-pointing triangle
(eleventh from the left) will state, Next (found) occurrence.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 9

Next (found) document: This icon looks like a bookcase with a large triangle on the left pointing
toward the bookcase. If you click this icon, it will take you to the next document (other than 996-
12) that contains the next most frequent usages of the search, in this case Atlantis.

Next (found) occurrence: This icon looks like a piece of paper with a large triangle on the left
pointing toward the paper. If you click this icon, it will take you to the next occurrence of the
word “Atlantis” in this particular search – it could be in the same document or it might be in another
document.

Clicking the Next (found) occurrence icon will result in the following:
R0996-0012.TXT [Pg. 3, Level 1] 2 of 1389

And move you to the next occurrence of the word Atlantis in this particular search. You are still in the
same document Report 996-12, and this is the second occurrence.

However, clicking the Next (found) document icon will result in the following:
R0364-0013.TXT [Pg. 1, Level 1] 32 of 1389

Which means you are now looking at a Report document for reading 364-13, from page one. And this is
the 32nd occurrence of the word Atlantis in the 1,389 instances that this specific search returned. Note:
This means that the previous document in the search return (Report 996-12) contains 31 instances of
the word Atlantis.

To return to a previous page, you can start the search over again by using the Find in Readings search
window or you can click on the blue icons for Previous (found) document or Previous (found)
occurrence.

Previous (found) document: This icon looks like a bookcase with a large triangle on the right
pointing toward the bookcase. If you click this icon, it will take you to the previous document.
(Note: this icon is not fully illuminated if you are on the first document, as there is no previous
document in this particular search.)

Previous (found) occurrence: This icon looks like a piece of paper with a large triangle on the
right pointing toward the paper. If you click this icon, it will take you to the previous occurrence
of the word Atlantis in this particular search. (Note: this icon is not fully illuminated if you are on the first
occurrence, as there is no previous occurrence in this particular search.)

Please Note: At the top of your screen there is also a Show drop-down menu that has scroll down
options for both the Next and Previous functions.

Additional information on using the Find in Readings search function:

You can type up to five words in the search box but this search function will only search for those
documents that contain the words exactly as written. For more complicated search criteria, go to
the Advanced Search portion of this User’s Guide or see the Complex Search discussion contained
within the Using the Header Toolbar section.
Word searches are NOT case-sensitive, so you do not have to worry about capitalizing letters. All
letters will be interpreted as lower case.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 10

If you are searching for words that can be plural or singular, search for the singular word, as it will
also return plural results. For example, if you entered “Apple” the search would return every
instance of apple and apples; however, if you entered “Apples”, you would not receive back those
instances when the word was singular (apple).
Sonar uses an asterisk (*) as a wild-card character. So, for example, if you were looking for every
reading that mentioned “Egypt,””Egyptian,” or “Egyptology,” you could enter “Egypt*” and the
search would return every instance where those first five letters were in any document. In addition,
this function can sometimes be used if you are not quite sure how to spell something. For example,
if you were looking for “tumor” and you were not sure if the word ended in “or” or “er,” you could
type “tum*” and the search would find similar words, such as tumor, tummy, tumble, etc.

Intermediate/Advanced Note:
If you are interested in seeing the word or phrase you have selected only in a particular type of
document (e.g. Index, Background, Text, or Report), you can click on the Show drop-down menu
above, scroll down to Go To, and scroll over to Document, and a new window will appear at the
bottom of your screen listing all of the readings in this particular search in order of the number of
times the word of phrase occurs.

If you are interested in seeing the most frequent mention of the word Atlantis in a “Text” of a reading
(using the above stated example), you could scroll down to the first “T” document, click Go To and that
particular document will be displayed on your screen.

Please Note: This feature does not search the Cayce Health Database or Additional Resources in the
Help menu. You may also want to browse the Cayce Health Database.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 11

Searching with “Find in Alphabetic Index”

You can use the Find in (the) Alphabetic Index search window anytime you are looking for a subject that
is indexed in the Edgar Cayce readings. This A-Z index contains a complete listing of the more than
10,000 subjects mentioned in the Cayce material. The index also contains sub-categories of each
subject.

Please note that the index is a listing of subjects and concepts, not necessarily a listing of specific words
contained in a document. For example, if an individual had an issue with a volatile temper and Cayce
mentioned the need to address that problem, this portion of the reading might be indexed as “Attitudes
& Emotions: Anger.” The index includes all possible combinations of the topic, so that the same
information could be found in the index listing as “Anger: Attitudes & Emotions.”

The complete Index list is searched and matching entries are displayed as the user types in the search
phrase. Let’s imagine that your interest was Psoriasis. To begin searching the Index for references to
Psoriasis, you type Psoriasis in the “Find in Alphabetic Index” search window and press enter.

When you enter Psoriasis in this search box, the list immediately moves to show you words beginning
with the letters you have typed. For this example, you see Psoriasis and beneath it is the phrase
“Psoriasis Tendencies.” If you scroll down further, you will see a series of “Psoriasis: Tendencies:
Prescriptions …” that were recommended to various people. In fact, scrolling down further you can see
that there are nearly 100 different ways that Psoriasis was indexed in the Edgar Cayce readings.

Return to the word Psoriasis alone and click on that word in the Index box. A pop-up window will result,
showing you that this particular term has 363 occurrence(s) in 144 document(s).

Click the OK button to continue.

The Sonar Search program is designed so that the document with the most frequent citations of the
word or phrase being searched will appear first. In this case, note the series of numbers that appear
centered at the top of your screen:
R5016-0001.TXT [Pg. 2, Level 1] 1 of 363

You are looking at a Report document, for reading 5016-1. The first mention of Psoriasis (highlighted on
the screen) is from page 2 of that document, and this is the first occurrence of Psoriasis in the 363
instances that this specific search returned. Note that the Reports tab is also highlighted on the screen in
front of you, which means that the Report is what is being displayed on the screen.

In this instance, click on the Index tab and look at the result on the screen:
INDEX OF READING 5016-1 F 25
Circulation:Lymph:Psoriasis Par. 15-A
Diet:Psoriasis Par. 12
Eliminations:Poor:Psoriasis Par. 3, 15-A

PSORIASIS:CURED
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 12

Spine:Subluxations:Psoriasis Par. 4, 6

In this particular reading, Mr. Cayce recommended a number of treatment modalities for psoriasis,
including diet, osteopathy, improved eliminations, spinal adjustments, and so forth. Each of these
recommendations could be read about more fully by clicking on the “Text” tab.

Interestingly enough, if you click on the “Reports” tab of the reading you will find a follow-up report
from the young woman’s mother stating that the recommendations were never applied. However, the
same report indicates that years later other individuals suffering from psoriasis applied the very same
recommendations in Miss *5016+’s reading and got relief from their condition.

After exploring the various documents associated with 5016-1, you can click the Next (found)
document icon, which will result in the following:
I2455-0002.TXT [Pg. 1, Level 1] 61 of 363

Which means you are now looking at an Index for reading 2455-2, page 1, which is the sixty-first
occurrence of the word psoriasis in the 363 instances that this specific search returned.

Looking at the Index, you will note that there is quite a bit information related to the diet recommended
for psoriasis in paragraphs 10-12, 15, and 20-A of the Text. If you were interested in exploring this, you
could click on the Text tab and read that information.

Intermediate/Advanced Note: Let’s imagine that after reviewing 2455-2 above, you decided you were
really only interested in exploring those documents that were in the 363 instances of your
specific search that mentioned diet. It is possible to Drill Down within a specific search and focus
only on certain material.

To Drill Down, go to the blue square icons at the top of the screen and click on the drill, which is
the third one from the left. The letter “D” will move from the left to the right of the icon,
signifying that you are now in Drill Down mode. (Alternatively, you could go up to the top
headers, click on the Search drop-down menu and drop-down and click on Drill Down.)

Once in Drill Down mode, click the blue Complex Search icon, which is the second blue icon
from the left. (Alternatively, you could go up to the top headers, click on the Search drop-down
menu and drop-down and click on Complex Search.)

The Complex Search window will open. In the first box next to the “Documents” and “containing” drop-
down menus, enter the word “diet,” (without the quotation marks) and click Start Search. See the next
section for more information about Advanced Searching and the Complex Search window.

The Drill Down mode will return 157 occurrences in 96 documents. You can close the Complex Search
window and continue to explore the remaining documents.

Important Note: You will need to unclick Drill Down after using this function so that the normal search
feature functions properly.

Please Note: This feature does not search the Cayce Health Database or Additional Resources in the
Help menu. You may also want to browse the Cayce Health Database.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 13

Advanced Searching
After exploring some of the basic search features available with Sonar, you might wish to try a more
advanced search. An advanced search can help you find specific documents using more specific search
parameters.

The variety of ways in which you can use the advanced searching function is nearly limitless. For
demonstration purposes, however, let us assume that you wanted to search some of the “special series”
readings, perhaps specifically the Study Group readings. As noted in The Edgar Cayce Readings Section
of this manual, the Study Group readings are also known by the term the “262 series,” as each of those
readings begin with the number 262. Let’s further assume that you were only interested in the 262-
series readings that mentioned meditation.

To begin this advanced search, you would click on the Search drop-down menu at the top toolbar and
scroll down to Complex Search. Alternatively, you could click on the second blue icon from the left,
which will also invoke the Complex Search function. Once you have clicked on Complex Search, the
Complex Search window will open. You can then set the top search box to the right of “Documents” and
“containing,” enter the number 262, since one of the search criteria is that we only want those readings
with the number 262 included. Next, use the drop-down menu to the right and click on “in the same
document as.”

Our second criterion is that we want

those documents that also discuss
meditation; however, we might want
to also include those documents that
contain such words as meditate and
meditator. Therefore, we will use
Sonar’s wild-card character (*) and
search for “medit*”.

Go to the second level search box and enter “medit*” and click Start Search. [Note: using the rest of the
search level boxes you could refine your search even more fully.] The screen will then display the fact
that you have found 47 occurrences in 15 documents. You can then click OK and search through these
documents as you would normally.

The Complex Search box is extremely useful for finding documents in which you have more than one
search criteria in mind, or when you know that a specific reading contains certain words, or when you
know part of the reading number or part of a phrase that is used within a reading document.

Intermediate/Advanced Note:
It is possible to use the Complex Search function in a way that limits the search results with a large
degree of specificity. For example, you could look for only those readings that were given to males, or
you could search for readings given in a particular year, or readings given only for those individuals who
were thirty-five years old at the time of the reading, etc.

The Complex Search function allows you to search your Document Notes as well as the Document
Information. In order to utilize this level of specificity with the Complex Search function, click on the
Search drop-down menu at the top of the screen and scroll down to Complex Search. Once the Complex
Search menu has been activated, click on the left-most drop-down menu, which defaults to
“documents.” You can then choose a variety of specific parameters to narrow your search criteria.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 14

Those search parameters include the following:

Title – The Reading document number. The B indicates
it is a Background document, I is for an Index, R for
Reports, and T for the Text of a Reading.
Date - By typing in a year number in this box, you will
limit your search to reading documents for that year.
For an exact date, type the date in the box in this
format: YYYYMMDD.
Topic(s) – Topics from the Reading.
Reading (Type) – Type of reading, for example Life
Readings or Physical Reading.
Age or Age Category - The age of the person
requesting the reading is included in most readings.
You can limit the search to persons of a specific age by
typing in a number in the box for this option.
Time Given: The time the reading was given (if known).
Sex: This option allows you to limit your search to
either females or males. The default is for both sexes
to be included.

NOTE: The document information cannot be customized for the All Readings DVD. You can use the
Notes feature to add notes to a reading should you want to include additional information.

There is also a column that allows you to

refine your search by searching for
synonyms, words that begin with or end
with a particular set of characters, or
words that sound like another word. The
last column allows you to specify the
proximity of another word or document
for amazing flexibility.

For more information on using the Complex Search features, see the Sonar Professional Users Guide in
the Help and Resources Section.

Please Note: This feature does not search the Cayce Health Database or Additional Resources in the
Help menu.

Printing, Saving, and Using the Clipboard

In all likelihood, while searching the Edgar Cayce material you will want to print entire documents or
save entire documents or paragraphs of documents for later reference.

Basic printing
Now that you know how to search for documents, you can learn how to print them out. For this
demonstration, type the word “volcano” in the Find in Readings search box and press enter.

After Sonar performs the search, you will see the search resulted in 12 occurrences in 7 documents.
Click OK.

You should see the following document on your screen with the word “volcano” outlined in red:
Norfolk Ledger-Dispatch, July 10, 1935
VOLCANO WHICH KILLED 36,000 AGAIN BLASTS
Batavia, Java, July 10 - (AP) - The volcano Krakatoa, which
exploded in 1883, killing 36,000 persons, with a roar which
was heard for thousands of miles, began a series of eruptions
today…

Print Selection
There are several ways that you can print. The first way is to print only a few lines of text. Click your
cursor in front of the “N” in Norfolk. Holding down your left mouse button, drag your mouse downward
to highlight as much of the document as you would like to print.

Go to the top toolbar and click on the File drop-down menu. (Make sure your printer is turned on.) Click
your cursor on the words Print. Your printer will now print the text that you have highlighted.

Print Whole Document

To print a whole document, go to the top of your screen, click on the Edit drop-down menu. Scroll down
to Select All. The entire document will be highlighted. After highlighting the entire document, go back to
the File drop-down menu and scroll your cursor down to print. You must put your cursor in the box with
the document in order to select it.

Note: Rather than using the drop-down menus each time, you can also use the short-cut key strokes for
Select All and Print, which are noted within the drop-down menus on the right.

The menu option for Print will only be available if you have selected text to print from the box. You
cannot print from the Health Database.

Optimal Font for Printing

The Edgar Cayce readings database was created with a size 12 basic Courier typeface and, at the time
the database was created, “hard returns” were used to maintain formatting throughout all the readings.
Although you can paste an entire reading (or series of readings) into a Word document and change all of
the formatting to create a more desirable printed appearance, you can also simply change the font style
and size back to Courier 12.

Before printing large documents, it is a good idea to test how the font will print on your printer by
printing just a paragraph. This way, you will make sure that your document comes out the way you
desire.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 16

Using the Clipboard Function to Save and/or Print

Let’s imagine that while going through a specific search, you have found several documents that you
want to keep in a file or in hard copy. You’ll probably want to save these documents or paragraphs as
you find them, rather than having to go back through an entire series of documents to find them.

When you find a document that you want to save or print, place and click your cursor within the
document. To keep the entire document, go up to the Edit drop-down menu, go down to Select All. The
whole document will become highlighted. Next, return to the Edit drop-down menu, go down to
Clipboard, and scroll over to Append to Clipboard. That entire highlighted document has now been
saved to a Clipboard. You can continue to save as many documents or pieces of documents to the
Clipboard as you desire. To view your clipboard, use Show Clipboard.

Note: Rather than using the drop-down menus each time, you can also use the short-cut key strokes for
Select All and Append to Clipboard, which are noted within the drop-down menus on the right.
If you want to save a portion of the document to the Clipboard rather than an entire reading, simply
move your cursor to the start of the section you want to save, click the cursor, and scroll through the
portion of the document you want to keep. Once the portion is highlighted, you can then go up to the
Edit drop-down menu, scroll down to Clipboard, and scroll over to Append to Clipboard.

When you are finished adding materials to your Clipboard, you can paste your Clipboard into a Word
document for printing or saving by using the appropriate short-cut key stroke, or you can simply go to
the Print drop-down menu and send the clipboard to your printer.

You cannot append to the clipboard from the health database. You can copy and paste using the right
click on the mouse for PC.

Once you open the clipboard, you can ‘right click’ to see additional options such as copy and paste for
the PC. If you copy from the clipboard, it automatically creates a new clipboard.

Favorites
You also have the option to save a document to your Favorites folder. In order to use this function, click
on the Favorites toolbar menu. Next, place your cursor somewhere within the body of the document
and click Add to Favorites. You will be prompted to enter a name for the document. It is recommended
that you use a name or a reading number that will specify for you what the document is all about. Once
a document has been saved as a favorite, it will be listed by title under the word “Favorites” in the
Favorites drop-down menu. You can remove a document from your Favorites by scrolling down to
Remove Favorites and then scrolling over to the name of the document and clicking on the title you

Exploring the Header Toolbar

Sonar offers many search functions for both beginner and expert researchers of the Edgar Cayce
material. Since Sonar is a stand-alone search engine that is used for a variety of databases and
programs, there are a number of search features that are not generally used by individuals exploring the
Edgar Cayce readings database.

For that reason, this overview will provide you with a snapshot of those functions most often used by
Cayce researchers.

File Menu
Print is the function you will need to use in this drop-down menu.
Exit allows you to exit the program.
CAUTION: If you click on the drop-down menu Open and the scroll over to Folder List, it is
possible that you will unclick the “Readings” database and make the Sonar program unusable
until you re-click the “Readings” database.

Edit Menu
Copy – You can use the copy menu by either highlighting a portion of a document that you wish
to save, or by choosing the Select All function in order to copy an entire document. Once the
selected text or the entire document has been chosen, you can use the Copy function and then
paste that information into another document, like a Word or text file. If you are copying a
series of selections or documents, it is recommended that you use the Clipboard function.
Select All – In order to use the Select All function, you need to insert your cursor into the
document by either clicking within the document or highlighting a portion of the text. At that
point, the Select All function is enabled. Most often after using Select All, you will want to use
the Copy or Clipboard functions.
Clipboard – The Clipboard function enables you to collect an almost limitless number of
documents for later use in a Word or a Text file. You can access the Clipboard after highlighting
a portion of a text or selecting an entire document. Once the document has been highlighted,
you can click on the Clipboard function and it is copied. You can then move on to another
selection or to a different document and add that to the Clipboard as well. Documents are
added to the Clipboard in the order they are selected, and they remain in that order. (Caution:
Although the Clipboard has a virtually limitless memory, the entire Clipboard memory will be
lost if there is a power loss or your computer crashes.)
Fonts – The Edgar Cayce readings database was created with a size 12 basic Courier typeface
and, at the time the database was created, “hard returns” were used to maintain formatting
throughout all the readings. Although you can paste an entire reading (or series of readings) into
a Word document and change all of the formatting to create a more desirable printed
appearance, you can also simply change the font style and size back to Courier 12. You also have
the option to make the fonts larger or smaller on your screen.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 18

Search Menu
Complex Search – See Advanced Searching for additional information. The Complex Search
function enables you to be even more specific in terms of your various search parameters. For
example, you could find any occurrences within the Cayce readings in which a subject was
discussed and that subject was discussed within the same document or within so many words of
another word.
Drill Down – Once you have performed any search parameter, you can get even more specific
and eliminate some of the material you may not need. This function enables you to Drill Down
within a specific search and focus only on certain information. Once you have clicked on the Drill
Down option you are in Drill Down mode. This disables the broader search function and enables
you to perform a more targeted search on the search parameter results that you are currently
working with. Once in Drill Down mode, you will want to undertake an additional search with
the Find in Readings search box or with the Complex Search function.
Note: Once you have completed working with the Drill Down function, you will want to click it
again to disable Drill Down mode and re-enable the normal search function.
Suspend/Resume – The Suspend icon can be used after you have performed a particular search
and want to save that information but need to quickly do another search in the interim. Click on
Suspend and it will allow you to go to the Find in Readings search box in order to perform a new
search. Afterwards, click on Resume and it will take you back to the results from your previous
search.

Show Menu
Go To – Once you have performed a specific search, it is possible to quickly move to specific
types of documents (e.g. Index, Background, Text, or Report) or to specific reading numbers by
using the Go To function. Scroll down to Go To, and scroll over to Document, and a new window
will appear at the bottom of your screen listing all of the readings in your particular search in
order of the number of times the word or phrase occurs. If you were interested in seeing the
first Text document (they will be listed in order of greatest frequency), you could scroll down to
the first “T” document, click Go To and that particular document will now be displayed on your
screen.
Instant Index – Once you have performed any search parameter, you can obtain an index listing
of all documents that are part of the search result. Scroll down to Instant Index and a new
window will appear at the bottom of your screen. Click your cursor in the body of the screen,
and you will be able to use the Select All function to either Copy or append to your Clipboard.

Document Menu
Notes Window –You can save notes to the specific readings by
choosing Notes and typing the note. These notes will remain with the
document that it is saved to and can be accessed again in the future.
Whenever you bring up that same document, your comments will also
appear. These comments are searchable with the Complex Search.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 19

Favorites Menu
Add to Favorites – If you find documents that you would like to keep for easy access as a
“Favorite,” simply place your cursor somewhere within the body of the document, click Add to
Favorites, and you will be prompted to enter a name for the document. It is recommended that
you use a name or a reading number that will specify for you what the document is all about.
Once a document has been saved as a favorite, the title will be listed under the word “Favorites”
in the Favorites drop-down menu.
Remove Favorites – You can remove a document from your favorites listing by simply scrolling
over to that document and clicking on the title you want to remove.

Help Menu
The Help menu contains this Quick Start Readings and Users Guide, documents About Edgar

Exploring the Blue Icon Tools:

Just below the main header toolbar, there are seventeen square short-cut icons that can be used to
perform various functions within the Sonar program without your having to choose those functions from
drop-down menus. Here is a description of their functionality:

Search Now – This icon performs the same function as clicking “Enter” when you are using the
Find in Readings search window.

Complex Search – This icon invokes the Complex Search dialog box and function.

Drill Down Off/On – This icon turns on or off the Drill Down function.

Associated Subjects – Creates an associated subject list, not generally used by researchers of the
Edgar Cayce readings database.

Suspend – This icon enables the Suspend function so that you can undertake a different search
without losing the results from your current search.

Resume – This icon will take you back to a previous search that has been interrupted due to the
Suspend option.

Go To (Selected) Document – This icon invokes the Go To function.

Next (Found) Document – This icon takes you to the next document that has been pulled together
by your search parameters.

Previous (Found) Document – This icon takes you to the previous document that had been pulled
together by your search parameters.

Go To (Selected) Occurrence – Although rarely used by researchers of the Edgar Cayce readings
database, this icon can be helpful if you are looking for a very specific word or series of words and you
know how the rest of the sentence containing that word/series appears. Similar to the Go To (Selected)
Document, the icon invokes the Go To function.

Next (Found) Occurrence – This icon goes to the next occurrence that has been pulled together by
your search parameters. It may be in the same document or it may be in the next document.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 21

Previous (Found) Occurrence – This icon goes to the previous occurrence that had been pulled
together by your search parameters. It may be in the same document or it may be in the previous
document.

Show Image – Opens the image window, not used by researchers of the Edgar Cayce readings
database.

Show Notes – This icon invokes the “Notes” function and dialog box.

Show/Hide Document Information – Although not generally used by researchers of the Edgar
Cayce readings database, this icon opens another window that displays additional information about the
reading (e.g. date, person’s age, person’s sex, type of reading, time, etc.). This information is also
contained in the Text document file for every reading but you may find this additional window option
useful.

Easy Link – Opens the Easy Links window, not generally used by researchers of the Edgar Cayce
readings database.

Standard Index – Creates a Standard Index, not generally used by researchers of the Edgar Cayce
readings database.

Web Site of A.R.E. (Internet required)

Whichever one of the five resources is currently in operation will have the circle next to it highlighted in
blue. You can jump to different categories by simply clicking on them. Use the arrow-left and arrow-right
buttons to move back and forth through pages that you have already visited.

While using this information, you can right-click to use features such as print, copy, and paste. Please
note that searching the Readings and Index will not search the Cayce Health Database.

Overview of Diseases (A-Z):

Each of these health issues is essentially an overview commentary on what various readings
recommended for these specific conditions.

Therapies:
This is a compilation of some of the most common therapies recommended in the Cayce readings for
your easy reference. For example, if you were interested in learning how to make a castor oil pack, you
could scroll down to “Packs,” click on “Castor Oil packs,” and be able to see the instructions for making a
castor oil pack.

Health & Healing Information:

This menu contains a selection of articles on “Health & Healing” in general.

Research Reports and Articles:

This menu contains a selection of articles and reports on specific diseases and illnesses.

Glossary:
This menu contains an A-Z listing of health terminology.

Web site of A.R.E. (Internet Access Required):

Choosing this option will take you to the EdgarCayce.org Web site within the same frame as the health
database. This option will not work without internet access.

The Edgar Cayce Readings

All of the readings were given between the years 1901-1944. The first reading for which there is
documentation is a reading that Edgar Cayce gave to himself (294-1) on a health condition; the last
reading is also one that Edgar Cayce gave to himself after suffering a stroke (294-212). He died within 5
months of his final reading.

The Edgar Cayce readings are numbered to maintain confidentiality. The first set of numbers (e.g. “294”)
refers to the individual or group for whom the reading was given. The second set of numbers (e.g. “1” or
“212”) refers to the number of the reading for that individual or group.

Over the years, Mr. Cayce mentioned an astonishing 10,000 different subjects. Although an individual
might have come to him for a reading on a specific topic, for example information on “Atlantis,” during
the course of that reading he mentioned many other subjects.

In addition to individual readings that mention multiple subjects, on a number of occasions “group
readings” or “subject readings” were obtained as a special series. The identifying ID numbers for each of
these readings given in a special series is as follows:

ID Numbers and Special Series Readings

254 Special Series – Work Readings
262 Special Series – Study Group Readings
281 Special Series – Prayer Group (Revelation Readings)
364 Special Series – Atlantis/Creation Readings
996 Special Series – Atlantis Readings
1800 Special Series – Specific Remedies, Appliances, etc.
2087 Special Series – Atlantic University Readings
3976 Special Series – World Affairs Readings
5747 Special Series – Juvenile Delinquency
5748 Special Series – Egypt/Prehistory
5749 Special Series – Jesus
5752 Special Series – Psychic Sources
5753 Special Series – Reincarnation Readings
5754 Special Series – Sleep Readings
5755 Special Series – Solar System Readings
5756 Special Series – Spiritualism Readings

Just as an example, looking at the above chart, the “262 series” were those readings given to the original
group of individuals who requested readings on the subject of soul growth and personal spirituality
(essays on the group’s experiences were later compiled into two books, A Search for God, Book I and
Book II). In the 262-series, there are a total of 130 readings. The first one (262-1) was given on
September 14, 1931, and the last one (262-130) took place on July 30, 1942.

Each of the 14,306 readings documents within this DVD-Rom contains four separate files: Index,
Background, Text, and Reports, each of which is explained later in this User’s Guide.

Guidelines for Understanding and Working with the Edgar Cayce Readings

For most individuals, the style of the Edgar Cayce readings is difficult to work with at first. When Edgar
Cayce asked in various readings about the source of the information that came through him, he was told
that his own higher self, his “super-conscious mind,” was that source. The super-conscious mind often
did not talk in the conversational style that we are accustomed to. For that reason, the language and
sentence structure of the readings can present a challenge to individuals who first come across this
material. Here are a few guidelines that will help you to understand how to work with the readings:
o Do not expect to read this material at the same speed you normally read anything else. You
will need to slow down, perhaps even taking the time to read the material aloud.
o Be patient. Even the most experienced students of this material may find portions of a
reading that can be difficult to understand. Rather than getting bogged down, read the
material again and if that doesn’t work, keep on reading the rest of the particular reading.
You may find something later on in the reading that clarifies what was at first confusing.
o Oftentimes, the clarity and depth of the content in a reading was dependent upon the belief
system of the individual for whom the reading was given. The information received also
related to the individual’s ability to apply and understand.
o The physical readings are specifically targeted at the unique conditions of the individual for
whom the reading was given. The fundamental healing method recommended in the
readings is to reestablish normal processes in bodily functions through all means of
treatment approaches (medicine, surgery, diet, exercise, adjustments, etc.), thus allowing
the natural forces to heal the body. Patterns may be found in analyzing a large number of
readings on a particular ailment. But until the patterns are found, it is risky to assume that
the suggestions in any one reading may be applicable today to an individual with a similar
problem.
WARNING! The specific formulations given in an individual reading should only be used
within the context of the entire reading and with other readings on the same subject. It is
recommended that individuals who are open to working with the health principles
contained in the Edgar Cayce readings do so under the supervision of their health care
provider.
o Two of the most popular types of readings are “physical” or “health” readings and “life”
readings.
o For more information on the Edgar Cayce readings, please go the Help menu and select
“How to Study the Readings”

Disclaimer: The readings, particularly the health readings, were given for specific individuals. This information

User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 26

Understanding the Readings’ “Index”

The “Index” is a listing of every subject contained in the reading. The actual Edgar Cayce reading is
known as the “Text.” If there is supplemental information in the background or reports that is relevant
to the actual reading, it will be notated on the Index with a letter “B” for “Background” or “R” for
“Reports.” All other items indexed in the readings are referenced by specific paragraphs within the
reading’s text. The Index lists the paragraph number in which the topic can be found; if the number is
followed by an “A” (see example below, e.g. “6-A”) it indicates that the topic was mentioned in
paragraph 6, during the question-and-answer period of the reading.

The Index generally contains one or two subjects listed in all capital letters and additional subjects listed
in upper and lower case letters. Those subjects listed in all capital letters indicate what subject-matter
was specifically requested by the reading, whereas the upper and lower case subjects indicate what
other subjects arose during the course of that same reading. Please note that Indexed subjects may not
necessarily refer to specific words mentioned in the Text. In the below example, although “Soul
Retrogression” is indexed in paragraph 5 of the Text, that paragraph contains information on Soul
Retrogression but not necessarily the term itself.

An example of the Index from reading 275-19 follows:

INDEX OF READING 275-19 F 18

Akashic Records Par. 3
Bible: Books Of: Ezekiel 20:37 Par. 5
Hebrews 12:1 Par. 6-A
Mark 14:38 Par. 6-A
Matthew 26:41 Par. 6-A
Psalms 23:5 Par. 6-A
Revelation 7:14 Par. 6-A
Revelation 12:11 Par. 6-A
Clairvoyance of E.C.: Characteristics Confirmed Par. R1
Karma: Physical: Osteochondritis Par. 4, 5, 6-A
INCARNATIONS: ROME
Mind: Memory: Incarnations Par. 5
Soul Development: Arts: Music Par. 6-A
Suffering Par. 5
Soul Retrogression: Persecution Par. 5
Work: E.C.: Readings: Akashic Records Par. 3

In this example, the reading references more than a dozen different topics. The specific subject
requested by this 18-year-old female was additional information on her lifetime, or “incarnation,” in
Rome. Other topics mentioned during the reading include references to specific Bible passages, a
mention of the Akashic Records, the fact that the woman had experienced soul retrogression during that
lifetime, and so forth. The Index also indicates that the woman later verified some information given in
this reading in a follow-up report: “Clairvoyance of E.C.: Characteristics Confirmed Par. R1.”
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 27

Understanding the Readings’ “Background”

The “Background” is generally a brief commentary that explains how this particular reading originated.
For example, how the individual heard about Edgar Cayce, and whether or not this particular reading
was a follow-up reading to one that had been given previously are both frequent comments contained
within various Background documents. Oftentimes copies of initial correspondence that were sent to
Edgar Cayce prior to the reading taking place are also included in the Background.

An example of the Background from reading 195-12 follows:

BACKGROUND OF READING 195-12 M 41

B1. Previously he obtained Physical rdgs., a Life Rdg., and various land investment rdgs.,
including series 3825-1 through 3825-4 which he and his partner, Mr. [4687], obtained on oil
lands in Uinta County, Wyoming.

B2. 5/5/25 Mr. [195] was present, submitting questions about unfair dealings of his partner, Mr.
[4687], dissolving of partnership, lawsuits, etc.

The numbers 195-12 M 41 indicate that this is reading number 12 given to Mr. [195] who is a male and
was forty-one years old at the time of the reading.
The notation “B1” indicates that this is a “Background” notation and that it is the first notation in the
Background. The notation goes on to indicate what other kinds of readings Mr. [195] had obtained.
Notation B2 states that Mr. [195] was with Mr. Cayce when this particular reading was given. However,
a vast number of the readings were given at a distance. Mr. Cayce only needed the name and address of
an individual (or his or her place of birth) to tune into that particular person.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 28

Understanding the Readings’ “Text”

The “Text” is the actual reading given by Edgar Cayce. In addition to the actual reading, each Text
document generally contains the individual’s ID and reading number, the individual’s age, and whether
or not the person was male or female. The Text states where and when the reading was given, the type
of suggestion given to Mr. Cayce to give the reading (e.g., a health reading suggestion, a life reading
suggestion, a mental/spiritual guidance reading suggestion, etc.), and who was actually present in the
room when the reading was given.

An example of the Text from reading 136-80 follows:

TEXT OF READING 136-80 F 23

This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va.,
this 9th day of May, 1928, in accordance with request made by [900].

READING
Time of Reading 10:30 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City
(Check Physical Suggestion)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here - this we have had before.
2. Now, we find there are accentuations of physical conditions that cause distress at times in the
physical forces of the body. These have to do especially with the eliminations as function
through the respiratory system. Hence, with the cold and congestion that exists, the circulation -
especially that in throat, bronchials, upper portion of lung and nasal channels and cavities - has
the accentuation exhibited through the mucus membranes of this portion of the system, see?
3. To meet the needs of these conditions we would first stimulate the excretory system,
especially through the liver - using as this: Two doses would be necessary - this in each dose:
Podophyllin.................1/2 grain, Leptandrin..................1/2 grain, Sanguinaria.................1/4
grain, Dovers’ Powder..............1/4 grain, Senna.......................1/4 grain.
Give the capsules about ten to twelve hours apart, see? following same - after five to six hours
after last dose - with a mild saline laxative; as Pluto, Epsom Salts, or such - a mild dose, see?
4. After the first of the capsules is taken, begin with five grain pellets of Calcidin to open or act
directly on the respiratory system. Do not begin these until after the first capsule is taken - two
or three hours, see? but take one every four hours until there is relief in chest and throat.
5. Well that an inhalant be used in croup cup, or heated in hot water, see? that is, the inhalant
as has been given and as is used - pour it in boiling water, or use in croup cup. This will open the
head and relieve the pressure and soreness in throat.
6. Gentle massage. Keep warm. Do not get feet wet, or sit or stand or walk in heavy draft, see?
7. Do that. We will find in two to three days the near normal conditions of the body. Ready for
questions. (After pause) We are through.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 29

This particular reading is very short. It is actually a check physical reading, meaning that it is a follow-up
to a previous physical reading and essentially deals with changes or additions that should be
incorporated into the treatments for Mrs. [136], who was 23 years old at the time of the reading.
In this reading, as in most others, Gertrude Cayce was present for the reading as “Conductor” and would
generally give the appropriate suggestion to her husband; and Gladys Davis, Cayce’s secretary and
stenographer, would take down in shorthand everything that was said. In this instance, Mr. L. B. Cayce
(Edgar Cayce’s father) was also present for this reading.
User’s Guide – The Official Edgar Cayce Readings on DVD 30

Understanding the Readings’ “Reports”

The “Reports” section of the readings contains follow-up information, correspondence, and file
notations regarding what transpired after the reading and/or documentation that confirms something
that was covered during the course of the reading. Sometimes there is follow-up correspondence
between Mr. Cayce and the individual who had the reading; on other occasions, a friend or a family
member of the person who had the reading submitted follow-up information for the files. The Reports
can also include articles or data from outside sources that verify something that was stated by Mr. Cayce
during that particular reading. Sometimes Gladys Davis made a note regarding having seen the
individual years later; on other occasions, the Reports contain a follow-up questionnaire that was sent
out to the individual as a means of evaluating the psychic information received from Edgar Cayce.
An example of the Reports from reading 5135-1 follows (the actual reading took place in May 1944):

REPORTS OF READING 5135-1 F 33

R1. 3/13/50 Questionnaire sent to Mrs. [5135] and Dr. Rathbun. No reply.

R2. 5/10/51 Questionnaire on [5135] was sent to her friend, Mrs. [2602].

R3. 2/18/52 Mrs. *2602+’s reply: “...The questionnaire on Mrs. *5135+ I sent to her father just
after I received it. I had given up hope of a reply, when lo and behold, it arrived the other day, all
the way from California. Her address is now ...”

R4. 5/26/52 Comment by IMG: “The questionnaire referred to in Mrs. *2602+’s letter contained
the following information: Date of onset: 9/1940; duration: condition somewhat relieved, but it
still persists; treatment: one year; result: relief; treated by: Dr. Rathbun; technical name of
ailment diagnosed as ‘nerves’ by physicians; neuropathic or osteopathic treatments.

“Mrs. *5135+ did not specify in the questionnaire whether she followed the suggestions given in
her reading, other than stated above.”

R5. No record of verbal or written contact on this case since 1/30/52, the date Mrs. [5135] put
on the questionnaire.

As is evidenced by the above Report, not a great deal of information was received after this particular
reading, and no additional information has been added to the file since 1952.
