Determinants : Lesson - 2

APPLICATIONS:

We use determinants to solve systems of “linear” equations.

Determinants : Lesson - 2

Cramer’s Rule:

Let, d1 a2 a3 a1 d1 a3 a1 a2 d1
a1x + a2 y + a3z = d1 d2 b2 b3 D2 = b1 d2 b3 D3 = b1 b2 d2
D1 =
b1x + b2 y + b3z = d2 c2 c3 c1 d3 c3 c1 c2 d3
d3
c1x + c2 y + c3z = d3

a1 a2 a3 D1 D2 D3
x= ; y= ; z=
b1 b2 b3 D D D
D =
c1 c2 c3

CRAMER’S RULE

D≠ 0 D =0

At least One D1, D2, D 1, D 2, D 3 = 0

D3 ≠ 0 D1 = D 2 = D 3 Consistent One of D1, D2,
Consistent =0 Infinitely Solutions D3 ≠ 0
Unique non-zero Consistent (except // lines) Inconsistent
Trivial solution trivial solution No solution No solution
Determinants : Lesson - 2

Homogeneous Equations

AX = 0

|A| ≠ 0 |A| = 0
Trivial solutions
x=y=z=0
Infinite Solutions x,y, z not then all O’s
(trivial) for consistency
& nontrivial

Example 1 Solve for x and y ; 2x + 3y = 8 3x + y = 5

Determinants : Lesson - 2

Example Solve for x and y ; 2x + 3y = 8 3x + y = 5

Solution : 2 3
D= = 2 × 1 – 3 × 3 = –7 D1 –7
3 1 x= = =1 ;
D –7
8 3
D1= = 8 × 1 – 3 × 5 = –7 D2 –14
5 1 y= = =2
D 7

2 8
D2= = 2 × 5 – 8 × 3 = –14
3 5 ∴ x = 1 and y = 2
Determinants : Lesson - 2

Example 2: 5x – 7y + z = 11
Solve: 6x – 8y – z = 15
3x + 2y – 6z = 7
Determinants : Lesson - 2

Example: 5x – 7y + z = 11
Solve: 6x – 8y – z = 15
3x + 2y – 6z = 7
Solution:

5 –7 1 5 11 1
D= 6 –8 –1 = 55 D2 = 6 15 –1 = –55
3 2 –6 3 7 –6

11 –7 1 5 –7 11
D1 = 15 –8 –1 = 55 D3 = 6 –8 15 = –55
7 2 –6 3 2 7
Determinants : Lesson - 2

Example 5x + 7y + z = 11
6x + 82 y + z = 15
3x + 2y + 6z = 7

Solution : Using Cramer’s Rule,

D1 55
∴x = = 1;
= D 55
D2 –55 x = 1; y = –1; z = –1
∴y = = –1;
= D 55
D3 –55
∴z = = –1
= D 55
