Minimum long-term strength verification test, options (not yet decided on)

i) Regression test per ASTM D 2992.

ii) Long-term (e.g. > 6000 hours) survival test. Test pressures to be based
on default ratio’s to MPR, same principle as used for 1000 hours test
pressure.

iii) Tests used for raw material re-qualification.

Proposed Research:

Method for regression analysis needs improvement.

Vulnerable to slope changes by:

ƒ Distribution of the failure data.

ƒ Significant changes in the failure mechanisms for

the shorter-term failures.

Other issues:

ƒ Cyclic Conditions

ƒ Default f3 factors

ƒ Scaling rules

ƒ API threaded Products

- Proposal: special category for pre-described joint.

ƒ Baseline values QC

ƒ A1 factors
ISO Cyclic De-Rating Factor A3
• Current ISO math produces nearly zero
values for A3 at high numbers of cycles,
even at load ratios ≥ 0.8
• Research at Batelle shows an S-shaped
curve with a fatigue limit greater than 20% of
initial strength between 108 and 109 cycles
• Theory and test data per ASTM D2992
Procedure A shows cyclic regression
approaches a straight line on a log-log scale
for up to 15*106 cycles. This does not fit the
current ISO S-curve.
Shell DEP Cyclic De-Rating Factor
A3
• The Shell DEP math produces no de-
rating for A3 at high numbers of cycles at
load ratios ≥ 0.8
• Research at Batelle showed even small
load changes (Rc = 0.95?) influence pipe
life to some degree
• Shell DEP math produces very small
variation in slope for Rc ≤ 0.5. Slope is
almost no different between Rc = 0.42 and
Rc = 0.400002
Proposed Changes to Factor A3
• Use the Shell DEP – ’98 as the basis for A3
• Set a fatigue limit at 1.5*108 cycles. This is
the projected value from D2992 Procedure A
and fits the Batelle data suggesting a fatigue
limit between 108 and 109 cycles. Fatigue
limit is set at default of fc = 4 or the ratio of
D2992static100,000/D2992cyclic 1.5*108 for A3
minimum
• De-rate A3 at all values 0.4 < Rc < 1.0
• Improve the interpolation method for a
smoother change in slope for all values of Rc
• Provide a graph of A3 for ease of use

Raw material re-qualification:

Retention of glassfiber-to-matrix bond after hot wet

exposure.

ƒ Inter laminar shear stress (ILSS, per ASTM D 2344)

ƒ Apparent hoop tensile strength (ASTM D 2290)

ƒ Ultimate elastic wall stress (UEWS, not standardized)
