What is Energy?
• Energy is capacity to do work.
• It can neither be created nor destroyed, only
converted from one form to another.

• Energy comes in different forms:

• Heat(Thermal)
• Light (Radiant)
• Motion (Kinetic)
• Electrical
• Chemical
• Nuclear Energy
• Gravitational

Energy Base Line

• Quantitative reference providing a base for

comparison of energy performance
• An Energy baseline reflects a specified period of time
• The Energy baseline is also used for calculation of
energy savings, as a reference before and after
implementation of energy performance improvement
actions.

Definitions
• Energy Consumption:
Quantity of energy applied.

• Energy Efficiency:
Ratio or other quanitive relationship between an output
of performance, service, goods or energy, and an input of
energy.
Example: Conversion efficiency: energy required/energy
used; output/input; theoretical energy used to
operate/energy used to operate.
Note - Both input and output need to be clearly specified in
quantity and quality, and be measurable.

Definitions
• Energy Management System (EnMS):
Set of interrelated elements to establish an energy policy
and energy objectives, processes and procedures to achieve
those objectives.

• Energy Performance Indicator (EnPI):

Quantitive value or measure of energy performance, as
defined by the organization
Note – EnPIs could be expressed as a simple metric, ratio or
a more complex model.

and/or offering considerable potential for energy performance
improvement
• In L&T Heavy Engineering following processes are energy
intensive.
• Welding, ESSC/SAW
• Machining
• Plate Rolling
• Lighting
• Pre Heating/Post Heating

Energy Objective and Target

1) Increase 15% energy savings YOY by Continuously identifying and implementing new
methods of energy conservation and efficiency as below:

a.      Use of alternate sources ( use of natural & renewable energy – use of daylight, solar
energy, solar pipe lights, bio-gas, wind energy, etc.)
b.      Use of new technologies (e.g. use of LED lights instead of conventional lights,
occupancy sensors, Variable frequency drives, welding inverters etc.)
c.       Enabling behavioral change (monitoring consumption for a building and taking
measures like increase in AC temperature, switching off lights when not necessary)

2) Reduce 5-10% Carbon Footprint YOY (Reduction in Total Energy Consumption in

offices and shops.

3) Identify the best measure for Specific Energy consumption and reduce the same
every year by 5%
