 DL 
∆ AZmax = asin  

Toolface for ∆AZmax : TF = 90 + ∆AZmax

Inclination change when the toolface is set at TF : [

IN2 = (IN1 ) − DL2
2
]
1/ 2

Example :

DL = 3.0°
IN1= 6.0°

 DL 
 = a sin 
3 .0 
∆ AZ max = a sin   = 30 . 0o
 IN 1   6 . 0 

TF = 90 + ∆AZmax = 90 + 30.0 = 120.0°

IN 2 = [(
IN1 )2 − DL ]
1/ 2
[
= 6.0
2
− 3 .0 ]
2 1/ 2
= 5.1962
o
≅ 5.2°

Note : at the toolface setting required to achieve maximum Azimuth change, the inclination is
slightly dropping !

IN 2 = IN 2 + DL

Example :

Conclusions

1. At ? AZmax the TF has to be set >>90° from HS, and the inclination is dropping
2. When keeping the inclination constant the ? AZ < ? AZmax and the TF is set >90° from HS
3. At 90° from HS TF setting the inclination increases and ? AZ < ? AZmax

Summary of the examples above :

TF from HS AZ change IN change

90° 26.6 + 0.7
