LITERACY DEVELOPMENT LESSON PLAN 2

Beginning of the Year Data

For the first set of data that was collected in August, there was plenty of valuable test that

helped me determine an appropriate goal for Lucas. The first set of data that I would like to

discuss is the running records. There were two different running records that the teacher Mrs.

Smith had Lucas do. The running records indicated that Lucas has many strengths and

weaknesses. One of the strengths that I noticed in in the data was his ability to substitute words.

In the story “A Bird Can Fly” Lucas substitutes many of the words for his own, this tells me that

Lucas knows what most of the words mean. An example is when Lucas replaces the words “A

kid can” with the words “So can I.” One of the weaknesses that I noticed in Lucas’s running

record was his errors throughout the reading. I know that Lucas had a lot of error because in one

running record he has a total of 20 errors and in the other he had a total of 18. One of the things

that I think Lucas could improve on with his concept of print is the meaning of a comma and

quotation mark according to the data. The one thing that I think Lucas was successful with was

his basic concepts of print. According to the data Lucas did a good job at identifying the parts of

the book and where things are throughout the book. A piece of writing data of Lucas’s that I

would like to address is the writing vocabulary. According to the data one of Lucas’s strengths

and weaknesses was his word recognition although he could not write the word, we know this

because Mrs. Smith made sure to include a note on his paper that says he was able to name

words but he did not know how to write them. For this set of data, I have two goals for Lucas, I

have a writing goal and a reading goal for him. The writing goal I have for Lucas is, I want him

to learn how to write more words so he can broaden his vocabulary, he can do this by practicing

spelling words daily and by understanding what each word means. The reading goal I have for
LITERACY DEVELOPMENT LESSON PLAN 3

Lucas is for his concept of word meaning to improve and for him to see the word at face value

for what it means. I want Lucas to improve on this so he can stop substituting words for his own.

Middle of the Year Data

Next, I would like to discuss Lucas’s second set of data that was taken during the months

of September and October. For the middle of the year data I did not receive any writing only

reading. I have looked at Lucas’s reading data and am going to analyze it. The second set of data

had three different running records based off of three different readings. The three readings were

“Strong Animals”, “The Big Hit”, and “Smack.” The data indicated that Lucas has many

strengths and weaknesses. Some of the strengths that I noticed in the “Strong Animals” running

record was his accuracy on the correct responses and his MSV (meaning, structure, and visual.)

Some of the weaknesses that Lucas faced in this running record was concept of words, repetition,

and trying to say the word instead of being told the word. Mrs. Smith made sure that she

included notes on the running records. Some of the strengths that I noticed in the “Big Hit”

running record was his ability to self-correct and his MSV. Some of the weaknesses that Lucas

faced in this running record was the understanding of the sound -y, depending on me to help on

words throughout the story, and having to be told more words than known word. Some of the

strengths that I noticed in the “Smack” running record was his ability to self-correct and his

MSV. Mrs. Smith put his SC and MSV on the right-side columns of the running record sheet.

Some of the weaknesses that Lucas faced in this running record was repetition, substitution, and

leaving words out in a sentence. My goal I have for Lucas is a reading goal. I want Lucas to

work on his word recognition skills. By evaluating all of the data I have found that Lucas

struggles most with recognizing the words which is why he leaves words out of sentences and

ask for help with words throughout the story.

End of the Year Data

For the last set of data that was collected in November, there was plenty of valuable test

in both reading and writing that helped me determine an appropriate goal for Lucas. The first set

of data that I would like to discuss is the running records. There were two different running

records that Lucas had to do. The running records indicated that Lucas has many strengths and

weaknesses. One of the strengths that I noticed in in the data was his ability to substitute words.

In the story “The Lions Tail” Lucas substitutes many of the words for his own, this tells me that

Lucas knows what most of the words mean. One of the weaknesses that I noticed in Lucas’s

running record was his lack of self-correcting, and his imbalance of MSV. I know that Lucas

struggled with self-correcting because in the records you can see a lack of him fixing his words

after he got them wrong based on the amount of self-corrections Mrs. Smith counted on the

right-side Colum. One of the things that I think Lucas could improve on with his writing is his

writing skills with the letters J, O, Q, R, V, X because in the writing Vocabulary Data sheet it

showed Lucas’s lack of recording and IDing those letters. The one thing that I think Lucas was

successful with in his writing is his word recognition and writing it. It seems that Lucas had

improved on his writing since the beginning of the year. According, to the data Lucas has a

previous hearing of the letter presented to him on the data card. Another piece of writing data of

Lucas’s that I would like to address is the page where it shows his writing of different words.

According to the data one of Lucas’s strengths with writing is his accuracy with spelling, we can

see this by looking at the words and majority of the are spelled correct. From this data you can

also see that Lucas puts an x over a letter if he messes up. Lucas’s weaknesses with writing is his

ability to space his words out and make them neat. For this set of data, I have two goals for

Lucas, I have a writing goal and a reading goal for him. The writing goal I have for Lucas is, for
LITERACY DEVELOPMENT LESSON PLAN 5

him to practice his writing skills with his letters and also with new letters so that way he will be

able to recognize all letters. I think Lucas can achieve his writing goal by practicing writing and

listening to words with being letters that may be unknown to him. The reading goal that I have

for Lucas is for him to work on his self-correcting. Lucas can work on this by reading stories on

his Lexile level which will strengthen his vocabulary.
