A greener school

We all know that being environmentally friendly is important, so isn’t it time for our school to start too? It
might seem difficult to get hundreds of different students interested in such a project, but there’s no reason
why they won’t want to join in, as long as it’s fun! That’s why we’re organising an environmental meeting, for
everyone to decide what we can do to help the environment at our school. All students and teachers will
meet on Friday morning at 9 am in the school gym to discuss and decide on a plan of action. We have
already collected ideas from everyone, and below are the three which we think can take place this year at
our school.

Idea 1: Put recycling bins outside the classrooms and learn how to separate waste. Also, we can try to
become a ‘zero-waste’ school – in other words, a school that doesn’t create rubbish.

Idea 2: Create a school garden, and grow all the vegetables we need for school dinners here. Any food
waste can go to making compost, and we can collect rainwater to water the plants.

Idea 3: Stop using paper in the school, and start using tablets. Students can send all their homework in by
email.

What we need to decide is which one of them we want most, so talk with your friends and decide exactly
which one you would like to put your energy into. On Friday, one of our teachers will present each of the
options, and what it will take in time and money. Afterwards, some students will express their ideas and
then we’ll all vote.

1 The school wants to start doing things that help the environment. _____
2 The meeting will last the whole morning. _____
3 The school wants to start three green activities. _____
4 Idea number 3 will cost the most money. _____
5 The different options will be presented by a student. _____
