During the past century, the use of cars has shaped the growth of many cities. Families moved into
areas around cities called suburbs. Suburbs did not have public transportation, so people began to
drive to work—from the suburbs to downtown. This created traffic jams and parking issues.

In the near future, it is estimated that 66% of the world's population will live in and around cities. This
could create even more traffic, according to Jan Gehl, a Danish architect, writer, and urban planner who
studies how urban design can improve quality of life. Gehl feels that city planners should begin to make
future cities more “people-friendly” again, rather than focusing on creating more space for cars.

Research has shown that suburban lifestyle has led to obesity, poor health, and shorter lifespans
because people are walking less and driving more. People who live downtown usually earn more money,
but spend less on transportation because they can walk or take public transportation to work. Jan Gehl
argues that people in the suburbs need access to affordable, public transportation too as they typically
have lower wages, but spend more on transportation.

Gehl thinks people should not need to drive between work and home in the future and that cars are old-
fashioned. He feels that being able to walk to work, shops, restaurants, cafés, and markets, in car-free
neighborhoods, can produce the highest quality of life for people. This is what Jan Gehl and other
architects are hoping to accomplish in the future of people-friendly city planning.
