The differences and similarities between Hutchinson & Waters view, and Alousque's
view on the development of ESP through time​.

1. Hutchinson & Waters view


● The demand of a brave new world, WII initiated an age of growth in
commerce, technology exchange and economy which led to the need of a
common language of exchange.
● A revolution in linguistics, tell me what you need English for and I will tell
you the English that you need. In other words the English needed by a
particular group of learners could be identified by analysing the linguistic
characteristics of their specialist area of work or study.
● A focus on the learner , educational psychology shedded lights on the
importance of learner's needs, interests and objectives towards the learning of
the English language.

​2. Alousque's view


● The learners aims and needs were for the first time taken into consideration in
English teaching, designing a course tailored to the demands of particular
group of learners
● The shift from ELT field toward a more communicative view of language
teaching and learning (from structure of forms to notions and functions)
● Rhetorical analysis (identifying textual patterns and specify the linguistic
forms that signal these patterns, which later on formed the syllabus of ESP
courses.
● Needs analysis (needs were specified in terms of goals
● The strategies Approaches, shedding on the perceptual and psychological
factors underlying language learning.
● Discourse and genre analysis, learning centred approach that also influenced
course design.
● New technologies have brought a development in ESP pedagogy.
