ASSIGNMENT: MODULE 2 (Descriptive Statistics – Numerical Measures)

1. A survey was conducted among 12 college students about the number of hours they
spend every day on Facebook and playing online games. The results are shown on the
table:
Facebook 3.5 3 2.5 4 4.5 2 1.5 3 2 2.5 3 3.5
Online
4.5 4 3.5 5 4 3.5 4 4.5 3 3.5 2.5 3
Games

As to students’ numbers of hours spent on Facebook and online games, separately:

1. Compute the mean, median, and mode.
A. MEAN
FB = (3.5+3+2.5+4+4.5+2+1.5+3+2+2.5+3+3.5)/12
= 2.92 hours

ONLINE GAMES = (4.5+4+3.5+5+4+3.5+4+4.5+3+3.5+2.5+3)/12

= 3.75 hours

1.5 2.5
2 3
2 3
2.5 3.5
2.5 3.5
3 3.5
3 4
3 4
3.5 4
3.5 4.5
4 4.5
4.5 5
B. MEDIAN
Facebook = 3 hours
Online Games = (3.5+4)/2 = 3.75 hours
C. MODE
Facebook = 3 hours (3 times)
Online Games = 4 hours and 3.5 hours

2. Compute the range, interquartile range, variance, standard deviation, and coefficient
of variation.
A. RANGE
Facebook
R = Highest – Lowest = 4.5 – 1.5 = 3
Online Games
R = Highest – Lowest = 5 – 2.5 = 2.5
B. INTERQUARTILE RANGE
Facebook
Q3 = [3(n+1)]/4 = [3(12+1)]/4 = 9.75th rank
Q3 = 3.5
Q1 = (n+1)/4 = (12+1)/4 = 3.25th rank
Q1 = 2 + [0.25(2.5 – 2)] = 2.125
IQR = Q3 – Q1 = 3.5 – 2.125 = 1.375

Online Games
Q3 = [3(n+1)]/4 = [3(12+1)]/4 = 9.75th rank
Q3 = 4 + [0.75(4.5 – 4)] = 4.375
Q1 = (n+1)/4 = (12+1)/4 = 3.25th rank
Q1 = 3 + [0.25(3.5 – 3)] = 3.125
IQR = Q3 – Q1 = 4.375 – 3.125 = 1.25
C. VARIANCE

TOTAL 45   5.75
MEAN 3.75

S2= 5.75/(n-1) = 5.75/(12-1) = 0.52

D. STANDARD DEVIATION
Facebook
S = SQRT(S2)
= SQRT(0.77)
= 0.88

Online Games
S = SQRT(S2)
= SQRT(0.52)
= 0.72

E. COEFFICIENT OF VARIATION
Facebook
CV = (S/Mean) X 100
CV = (0.88/2.92) X 100
CV = 30.14%

Online Games
CV = (S/Mean) X 100
CV = (0.52/3.75) X 100
CV = 13.87%

3. Determine if there are any outliers in the set of data.

Facebook
Zhighest = (4.5 – 2.92)/0.88 = 1.80
Zlowest = (1.5 – 2.92)/0.88 = - 1.61

Online Games
Zhighest = (5 – 3.75)/0.72 = 1.74
Zlowest = (2.5 – 3.75)/0.72 = -1.74

Based on the z-scores, none of the values in the data set are outliers.

4. How are the set of data distributed? Present your basis.

 Shape of data based on hours spent on Facebook is slightly

negatively skewed because the mean of 2.92 is less than the median
of 3.
 Shape of data based on hours spent on online games is symmetrical
because the mean and median values are equal.
