Assignment: Module 2
Descriptive Statistics: Numerical Measures

1. A survey was conducted among 12 college students about the number of hours they spend
every day on Facebook and playing online games. The results are shown on the table:

Facebook 3.5 3 2.5 4 4.5 2 1.5 3 2 2.5 3 3.5

Online games 4.5 4 3.5 5 4 3.5 4 4.5 3 3.5 2.5 3

As to students’ numbers of hours spend on Facebook and online games, separately:

1. Compute the mean, median, and mode.

2. Compute the range, interquartile range, variance, standard deviation, coefficient of variation.
3. Determine if there any outliers in the set of data.
4. How are the set of data distributed? Present your basis.

ANSWERS

1. MEAN

Facebook: 1.5 + 2 + 2 + 2.5 + 2.5 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 4 + 4.5 = 2.92

Online games: 2.5 + 3 + 3 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 3.5 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 5 = 3.75

MODE

Facebook: 3

Online games: 3.5 and 4

2. RANGE

Facebook: 4.5 – 1.5 = 3

Online games: 5 – 2.5 = 2.5

INTERQUARTILE RANGE

Facebook:

Q3 = 3 (12+1) = 9.75 rank Q3 = 3.5 + 0.75 (3.5 – 3.5) = 3.5 Q3 value

Q1 = (12 + 1) = 3.25 rank Q1 = 2 + 0.25 (2.5 – 2) = 2.13 Q1 value

IQR = Q3 – Q1 = 3.5 – 2.13 = 1.37

Online games:

Q3 = 3 (12+1) = 9.75 rank Q3 = 4 + 0.75 (4.5 – 4) = 4.38 Q3 value

Q1 = (12 + 1) = 3.25 rank Q1 = 3 + 0.25 (3.5 – 3) = 3.13 Q1 value

IQR = Q3 – Q1 = 4.38 – 3.13 = 1.25

STANDARD DEVIATION

Facebook: S = √0.77 = 0.88

Facebook:

Zlowest = (1.5 – 2.92) = −1.61 Zhighest = (4.5 – 2.92) = 1.80

0.88 0.88

Based on the computed z-scores, none of the values in the set of data is an outlier.

Online games:

Zlowest = (2.5 – 3.75) = -1.74 Zhighest = (5 – 3.75) = 1.74

0.72 0.72

Based on the computed z-scores, none of the values in the set of data is an outlier.

4. SET OF DATA IS DISTRIBUTED BY:

Facebook:

The mean and median among the 12 college students regarding the number of hours they
consume daily on Facebook is 2.92 hours and 3 hours respectively. We can say that the data
were negatively skewed because the mean of 2.92 hours is less than the median of 3 hours.

Online games:

The mean and median among the 12 college students regarding the number of hours they
consume daily on online games are 3.75 hours. We can say that the data were normally
distributed or symmetrical because the mean of 3.75 hours is equal to a median of 3.75 hours.
