1. Review of AC circuits, complex representation, power measurement, real power, reactive power
and PF improvement
2. Magnetic circuits: simple magnetic circuit, analogy between magnetic and electric circuits, linear
and non-linear magnetic circuits, hysteresis and eddy current losses, PM materials
3. Transformers: single-phase and three-phase transformers, construction, analysis & operation,
equivalent circuits, tests on transformers, phasor diagram, regulation and efficiency, auto-
transformers, instrument transformers (CT/PT), power and distribution transformers, all-day η
4. Electomechanical energy conversion principles: Force and EMF production in electrical machines
5. DC Machines: Types, construction, working principle of generators & motors, characteristics and
applications; control of speed in motors and EMF in generators
6. Three-phase induction machines: Types, construction, production of revolving magnetic field,
working principle, equivalent circuit, testing, characteristics, phasor diagram and applications
7. Three-phase synchronous machines: Types, construction, introduction to winding and winding
factors, working principle, equivalent circuit, phasor diagram and applications; motor and generator
operation; V and inverted V curves
8. Single-phase machines and special machines: (i) Single-phase induction motors: Double revolving
field theory, characteristics, starting mechanisms, equivalent circuit and performance evaluation (ii)
Special Machines: Stepper motor, Switched reluctance motor and PM motors

are mapped into ‘A’ as per your marks, you will be awarded ‘A-‘.

Tutorial tests 1 and 2 will be on Sept 18th and October 30th respectively.
