This course deals with various engineering machine working principles and their
design. Various DC machines, Motors and induction motors are dealt in this course.

UNIT I BASIC TERMINOLOGY 12
Electro motive force, reluctance, laws of magnetic circuits, determination of ampere-
turns for series and parallel magnetic circuits, hysteresis and eddy current losses,
Two lights in series controlled by one switch; Two lights in parallel controlled by one
switch.
UNIT II TRANSFORMER 12
Transformer: principle of working, construction of single-phase transformer, EMF
equation, phasor diagram on load, leakage reactance, voltage regulation, power and
energy efficiency, open circuit and short circuit tests,
To perform load –test on 1 ph. induction motor & plot torque –speed characteristics;
To study power consumed in a three-phase circuit;
